    DM tips on planning encounters...

Thank you, Henry. That makes me feel better about the fact that what you described is the most I've ever done to stat up an NPC.

    DM Questions... this right?

If it was too much for them to handle, why didn't they flee? I like your house rules, but they change the power of various classes (specifically the casters) so much that I don't have the faintest idea how you'd judge what the 'proper' difficulty is. Was there a reason the monk/sorc didn't...

    Call of Cthulhu

I'm not sure why people worry about advancing hit points. It's not like characters would be making it to tenth level anyway; this is Call of Cthulhu we're talking about. And you could always houserule it if you like. The d20 CoC book is extremely well laid out and has tons of good information...

[Not a Troll] An Honest Question (really) About Game Balance

Most people on these boards play D&D, which is pretty Gamist. In D&D, the extent to which you can do things to affect the "plot", so to speak, relates pretty directly to how effective you are on adventures. There are other games in which this isn't a focus, and balance isn't as much of an issue...

    [Mini-Game] Dark*Matter: Shades of Grey

Having looked over the original D*M book, it looks like they delayed access to spellcasting in the minigame to match what D20Modern does. I think 4th level would be about right (that's what I've done, anyway). Dark*Matter characters seem to be able to get to the core of their concept pretty...

Medallions d20 Modern (Update Wednesday 09-20-06)

I just wanted to say that this Story Hour has been a great inspiration in running my own game, which is sort of D20Modern meets Unknown Armies. Thanks for the brain food.

Weekend Warrior: Is it any good?

The maps in the full version give you the entire base, obviously, so that's one selling point. (That was enough to make it worth the purchase for me.) The adventure is fairly straightforward, kind of a Night of the Living Dead scenario on the base with some twists, but it also includes some...

    GR's Psychic's Handbook and d20 Modern Dark*Matter

I'm running something slightly similar (sort of D20Modern meets Dark*Matter meets Orpheus) and I use temporary ability damage (usually Wisdom) as the currency for using powers. It seems to work well if you want to encourage PCs to not rely heavily on their powers, and it sort of has that...

Why doesn't Spycraft use d20 Modern Rules

Honestly, the only thing you need from the PHB for Spycraft is the rules on how to advance to the next level, and the XP table. (And that's just because d20 products have to leave that out.) Spycraft really does different things from D20Modern, and the classes work totally differently. A 1st...

The best DM compliment I have ever received.

The expressions on their faces when we all pull off a really cool scene. I've actually had some really complimentary players in my latest campaign, which has been nice because I literally haven't GMed for a decade, so it's good to know I remember how to do it. For me, though, the biggest...

As a DM do you secretly enjoy the obnoxious player who pisses everyone else off?

I do have kind of a weakness for 'loose cannon' players, because they tend to keep things moving. But by this I mean, at worst, someone who occasionally does things worthy of the comic relief in a Hollywood action movie. (I wouldn't want anyone to intentionally endanger the rest of the party...

FYI: New Free d20 Modern Adventure Up at WotC

I haven't read the adventure, but... Wow, someone else with a Sweeney Todd - related username or avatar. What are the odds? :)

    d20 Modern Rogues Gallery?

If you like that one, check out the Dark*Matter D20 one under Story Hours as well. Different take on the subject matter but also some great ideas to plunder. ;)

    d20 Modern Rogues Gallery?

Here's one, from the excellent read "Medallion's story hour". http://www.enworld.org/forums/showthread.php?t=71765 It's on the fourth page of the Rogue's gallery if the link doesn't work.

    Weapons Locker info

Having looked through the Weapons Locker, I was hard pressed to find anything that lived up to Ultramodern Firearms. The "all these stats are the same" bit was present to an extent in UMF, but it made up for it in my opinion by having lots of additional information about various weapons.

    [Mini-Game] Dark*Matter: Shades of Grey

Just as a reminder, if the print copy of D*M is too rich for your blood, you can get it as a PDF for $5 from RPGNow.com. I haven't got a copy of the minigame yet, but is there much in there that I wouldn't already have if I have D*M, D20Modern, and the Menace Manual?

    Role-playing a Background

Wish me luck, because this is exactly what I'm doing for my next D20Modern session. I was tempted to do it in one-on-one sessions, but the thing of it is each of the characters has something odd about to be revealed in their past, and it doesn't 'add up' until all the pieces are put together...

    Encouraging players to role-play multiclassing?

Those of you who said this would be a problem for exotic character builds, I don't think you have to worry. If your character concept is "I'm a swashbuckler... I'll be going Fighter/Rogue", or "Primitive Shaman... Druid/Barb/Ranger" then you're already roleplaying the "change". You're doing...

    D20 Modern Heroic

One thing I find useful is to port over "partial BAB/saves" from how some people do it in D&D. For instance, if you take two levels of two low BAB classes, you get +1 total. If you take one level each of a low BAB class, you end up with +0. So I look at the progression and let classes with the...

"Shadow Chasers" Adventures - Any good ones?

Having bought Modern Backdrops, I can confidently say it'd be useful for you running Shadow Chasers. It's not just maps; it has adventure hooks and sample enemies for a variety of different levels. I'd consider starting with the sample Shadow Chasers adventure in the main book (with the zombie...
