    The Essentials articles are atrocious.

Yeah, definitely. I don't really know what the intent is, but if you're going to give a new player a stat array, you might as well make it a good one. When in D&D history has WotC just flat out given a stat array rather than advice on building one? It comes down to this issue where D&D has, by...

    The Essentials articles are atrocious.

Atrocious is certainly a strong word, given that I love about half of the articles. But I'm not seeing anywhere where he is criticizing anything but the articles themselves. I certainly see the "atrocious" word has made his point far more blunt than it needs to be, but it still remains. I mean...

    The Essentials articles are atrocious.

Actually, OP is right. Those are poor stats from a character optimization point of view. I don't see anywhere where he is insulting anyone's intelligence. Why would an article telling you how to play your class give you poor stats to start with? It doesn't make much sense, and can certainly...

    Teleportation and prone

What unbalancing thing can happen from allowing vertical teleportation?

Hey Rube! and other archaic knowledge

Actually, I was just quoting your use of the term "dumbing down." I agree completely with what you just said, just not with your original terms.

Hey Rube! and other archaic knowledge

You say whatever level the writer feels comfortable... that can be anything. From what you term as "dumbed down" language to something that anyone but PhD's in linguistics would consider archaic. Actually, they probably would too. As a college student, I'm going to have to disagree with this...

    Teleportation and prone

I feel like a feat would be a good idea for this concept Teleportation Initiate - Heroic Tier Feat "After the first 100 times, the nausea starts to fade. After 500, you start to learn a few tricks." When you spend an action to teleport, you can stand up from prone as part of the same action. In...

Wizards in 4E have been 'neutered' argument...

I don't think you addressed Rituals in your post, so how do you think they fit in to your generalization that spells only blow stuff up or move things? Most common I think people find that they aren't powerful enough, which leads me to believe it's not about the 'feel' for most people, it's...

Hey Rube! and other archaic knowledge

It's an interesting question, but I think the draw of some archaic words might strictly be in nostalgia. If you posed the same question, but instead said it wasn't written by EGG but instead by some writer last month, I think the answer would be clearly that those words would be for the most...

    Imprisoning the PCs

I agree that a prison break adventure can be fun, but less fun is being forced there. If they fail a challenge or something, then throw them in and have it be fun. But don't just throw them in willy-nilly. The 4E DMG 2 talks about making both success and failure interesting options, but nothing...

    Why I'm done with 4e

I think the notion that every class, including classes with no spells, in the game should have interesting options in combat (in the form of at-will, encounter, daily) was an influence from WoW and Diablo. Which is great, in my opinion.

    Why I'm done with 4e

Good point. Thanks for the correction. Definitely agree here, but if the next line is 'go to 3E'-- then- what? Since when is 3E rules light and narrative focused? Like I've been saying, fair criticism against D&D in general, but to criticize the choice of 4E alone makes it seem like you're...

    Anyone play an assassin yet?

Interesting... When I first saw the Assassin I just wanted to make a Rogue / Assassin Hybrid. I wonder if there are any plans for this, or if it is going to be intentionally omitted?

    Why I'm done with 4e

Good post. There's something funny about encounter powers indeed. If you imagine elements of an RPG going on a slider that goes between "GAMIST" and "NARRATIVIST" where exactly does an encounter power fall? Thinking about it, these seem like poor descriptors of what the real dichotomy is, but I...

    Build Me: A Half-orc fighter/defender

This is actually a funny build. Move adjacent to a target to mark it, then use rogue powers for sneak attack. If you riposted, they will have take an attack to attack you, or take your mark attack by attacking something else plus a -2 penalty to their attack. Doesn't really fit in with a lot of...

    Why I'm done with 4e

Out of curiosity, what is "CaGi?" To answer your question, I would probably decide around character creation no matter what character I was why certain things I could only do at-will, certain things encounter, and certain things daily. For Wizards it could be a simple enough port from 3E. Daily...

    Why I'm done with 4e

I read the post, and that's a different mindset, but I am curious what you say to someone, namely me, who makes no changes on the fly/justifications and makes no compromises with narrative and plays 4E. And enjoys it greatly. And still has his narrative coming before mechanics. I guess my point...

    Why I'm done with 4e

I'm not sure I'm following you here. For the Fighter example, when I make a fighter I want someone who is cocky and arrogant and is an annoying target that enemies want to take down both to shut up and shut down physically. So I choose come and get it. I notice that it pulls enemies and allows...

    Why I'm done with 4e

I would agree that 4E is mechanics first then narrative if and only if there was no choice in power selection. If you think "Come and Get It" doesn't fit your character, then you don't pick it! No need for 'justifying' anything if you don't want to. A problem arises if you can't find any power...

    Which feats are "taxes"?

Hitting with an attack is going to do more damage than 1d10, unless your a terribly built character at level 1. Weapon focus is better. Not sure if it was a joke, but there ya go anyway. EDIT: Assumed you meant devastating critical... but I'm pretty sure there isn't much better than that anyway.
