settings, support and your buying dollar!

I play all homebrew, but I buy a lot of settings. I read them for the same basic reasons I read fantasy novels - inspiration and exposure to new ideas. Since people started talking modules, I'll add that I like a good story, just don't tie it to your silly world or add-on rules and I might even...

The Warmage, Alot more thasna sorcerer?

I have been thinking about it because I use them for an organization in my world, but I'm afraid I have nothing worked out that I could offer you today. Mostly because no one wants to play one. Hmmm... Now I need to ask if that's why :D. They might be willing to if I house ruled the class.

    Prerequisites for Multiclassing

Interesting concept. I actually put the onus on going to the new class - you have to go train, and it ain't gonna be quick. I don't limit multi-classing in any way, but do force players to "sit out" while their character is training and the rest of the party goes off and does stuff. I never...

    Power Gaming

This isn't directed at you, it came up on this thread, so I'll mention it. IMXP, attempts to use the word "optimize" are thinly veiled covers of power plays. My best players roll the dice, and if they get crappy rolls they smile and build the best character they can, and then roleplay them to...

    Power Gaming

Funny, I actually tell people that when they express an interest in one of my games "The game system might be for you, but if you are a power gamer, my game is NOT for you. Anyway, I can relate to the poster, it seems there are a lot more powergamers out there today than their used to be (not...

    Help, my players are scared!

Wow, I couldn't agree less with you and everyone else that wants to classify fighting monsters and bad guys as sociopathic. While DnD is more than a wargame, it is still basically a heroic game. You do not get to be a hero by compromising with evil. Ruins the whole feel. Now, the poster...

    Favorite 3.5 adventure modules

Can you give some info about your group's playing style? I'm always listening for things I can use, but I've found if you don't ask this question, info is useless because what a group of powergamers likes won't necessarily do for my groups.

    Whose "property" are the PCs?

Now that is a different story. We write about the characters in one of my worlds, and even though I have an "I reserve that right" policy in the world, and all of the players know it, if I am writing something that will be public - particularly books, but also just short stories - I ask the...

Why I don't write FRP articles any more

Heheh. I won a D&D-themed edition of Clue at the GenCon where 3.0 was released. Never opened it, thought the whole concept was silly. I'm not even certain where I put it at this point.

    Clerics with no gods

I don't allow it in my worlds. Your power comes from your deity, thus not having a deity equates to no power. I know that others do it differently, but that's the ruling I've laid down, and even players who aren't thrilled deal with it okay because they do have the option of not playing a cleric.

    "First Edition Feel"

I believe that (by default) 1E appealed more to role-players and left people who cared more about solid, consistent rules out. I further believe that (by default) 3E appeals more to rules-oriented folks and leaves people who prefer role-playing out. When you have a die roll for "Knowledge -...

    Whose "property" are the PCs?

I follow some simple rules for my campaigns: 1. The character can not "pop out" of my worlds into another game. What's created there stays there. While I can't stop them from playing the character elsewhere, the character will still be in my world. 2. If the player might ever play the character...

    Favorite 3.5 adventure modules

I'm an old-timer - 1E was my first game, and HackMaster is still my core game system (without all the silly stuff), and I don't allow evil PCs, just so you know where I'm coming from. My favorites are all Dungeon Crawl Classics by Goodman Games. Honestly. They don't assume anything about the...

Why I don't write FRP articles any more

I too write in the technical world for a living - previously as a freelancer, now as a full time employee. I have only had one gig where I retained the rights. I do think he's got some valid points though. You have to make enough to survive if you're going to devote your mindshare to it, and...

Prediction of a gaming boom/ Edition discussion

Regardless whether we like it or not, the corporation must be profitable. Profit mostly comes from core books. Either the game grows fast enough to provide that growth, or new versions with 'improvements' must come out. That likely means less than 5 years, maybe as little as 3, on average...

    Help me stop my Player!

I think I'm on the wrong thread :D All of this seems oddly obsessed with rules to me. Who cares what the wording is if it doesn't work? No set of rules is perfect (don't tell the guys at Kenzer I said that). Sometimes, sanity and storyline must take precedence. This isn't chess. If you want...

Prediction of a gaming boom/ Edition discussion

Wanna make a bet on that? :uhoh: I figure that old-time games like 1E,2E, and 3E will see a huge comeback, and prices for those old OGC books will go through the roof on E-Bay. All gaming will end up online because "Those old farts in my nursing home are power gamers". Calling someone who is...

    Help me stop my Player!

Let me start by saying I've stayed out of this because I feel this is the predictable outcome of an evil-based party. Play that type of game, and you're asking for trouble. There, I'm of my soapbox. In answer to your question... The controller is now not a shadowsimple, straightforward, at a...

Advice on Visiting a Foreign Land

Works for me. Having traveled pretty extensively, I can say that even in a "globalized" society this type of stuff is an issue. This is a simple way to account for it without writing whole volumes of rules or putting out special skills for each environment/society.

How terrible is the multiclass XP penalty?

True, but in order to get powerful in any of those classes you have to go up in all of them. In short it's a "there is a price to not being a specialist", which is true in RL also - the old "jack of all trades, master of none" theory, but with D20 games you get a "gimme" based upon your race. I...
