    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Blog - A Close Call with Negative Hit Points

I like the idea of hitting zero would Daze you (single action/turn), the next hit your dying (Unconscious/Death Saves). And simply put, heals on dying targets, will heal from 0, but dying targets have their surge value halved. For a more complex way if the amount of damage is more than twice...

D&D 4E Finally, a playtest reporting there are good things from 4e in Next!!

Paying attention all the time comes partly from opposed saving throws. Instead of the DM just knowing your defenses, you have to roll a saving throw.

    Class List?

Still that means we'll get fighter, cleric, wizard, rogue, ranger, paladin and also sorcerer, warlock, monk, barbarian, warlord, druid These are off the top of my head covering 3rd and 4th... That's either gonna be a helluva book, or really dense (yeah don't expect half page spell descriptions...

    Time to Heal

A better definition is: The cleric is a healer, in the same sense that a rogue backstabs... A rogue is the only character that can backstab, and thus expected to. Most of the time, in combat a rogue should be stabbing backs, outside of combat he does something else. Some rogues break the...

The worst of all editions? (humor)

Due to the popularity of League of Legends, and PvP within various other games. This will consist of a system built strictly around PvP balance. The GM's job consists of constructing a map, and coming up for an excuse why you're all fighting each other, or why Team A is after Team B. The GM...

D&D 4E What do you like about 4e healing?

It's not wasting, it just not fun. Cleric should have more choice in what they do, not just keeping their friends looking awesome. It's better to be able to heal your ally, and do something else productive, than have to decide between doing something awesome (and making the other player angry)...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should 5E have Healing Surges?

I think they should move forward with what their doing, it wasn't perfect, but it worked very well. Instead of saying that since it was slightly off, we should default to something that made less sense, was less about the characters, and was actually an ANTI-combat rule. Yeah, a rule that says...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should 5E have Healing Surges?

That doesn't sound like Everybody wins, that sounds like you win. There are lots of people who love healing surges, and lots of people that hate them... So the only fair decision is to leave them out? Personally I do not want to go back to characters survival based on a sack of wands/potions. I...

D&D 4E What do you like about 4e healing?

I'm in favor of all except perhaps: "Common rest cycle for hit points, spells and abilities" For the most part I agree with it, but there should be something in place to represent critical injuries, or things that will take longer to heal from. This type of damage though shouldn't be the...

If 4d6dl is the baseline, what's the PB/Array?

Ok, if anyone was interested, here's the graph of the data for what 4d6 drop lowest yields. As was pointed out this does not take into account rerolls. The 2nd-5th positions were found through Brute Force Monte Carlo (100,000,000 points) The average stat array then is: 15.66, 14.16, 12.93...

If 4d6dl is the baseline, what's the PB/Array?

I'm pretty sure I tried those probabilities and my numbers weren't coming out correct. I'm expecting once I have the probability for each number being the second highest, the sum of those should add up to 100%. I'll try again, maybe I just had a typo somewhere (or excel is rounding throwing it...

    Time to Heal

    1) That'd be interesting to know why they had to go back for weeks (I hope healing won't actually be that slow on a normal basis) 2) The reason is supply and demand. Parties demand healers and tanks (and there are few options for these), and they only need one. Almost any class can be a damage...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should 5E have Healing Surges?

Some chance for long term affects built in would be nice. The only long term status affect 4e had were diseases. What they should have done (or look to next edition), is for some default "diseases" to be applied at certain points. My first thought, is apply it when the character falls...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should Rangers Have Spells in 5e?

If it's a subtype of Ranger to cast spells I'd be fine with that. But I like the default ranger just being a martial character. Preferably, I'd like multiclassing to handle this. Ranger multi-Druid (nature magic ranger), Ranger multi-Wizard (Arcane Archer), Ranger multi-Cleric (DIVINE Archer...

If 4d6dl is the baseline, what's the PB/Array?

I was beating myself up with probability last night, didn't get as far as I'd like to, but here's some stuff to chew on. Using 4d6 drop Lowest: First column is on a single roll, what your chances of having that number is Second column is on a set of 6 rolls, what the chances are of that number...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should 5E have Healing Surges?

Healing surges were one of the best working things in 4e. They give a reservoir of endurance for the character. They in no way made it so you didn't need a cleric, healing surges were only freely available outside of combat. Inside combat, you had 1 available under normal means (hardly enough...

    Should point buy be discouraged?

I don't know if it's been said... but you can have rolled stats using point buy. Result equal footing character, randomly generated stats. 22 point buy... Roll 22d6, separate the dice by the number on the dice. Number of dice is the number of points you have towards a stat. There 6 stats...

    The Keep Rule

I think that it should be more of a GM/Story thing. If I'm running Dark Sun, keeps don't come that easy. But also it could be thrown in with a Leadership/Henchmen management in a sidebar of optional rules.

    D&D 3.x 1e-3e vs. 4e: The inverted difficulty curve in D&D 5e design

If I may say this about 4e.. this was part of why I think the math fix feats were a mistake. There were so many power bonuses, at that point that they were unnecessary. If you couldn't get the power bonuses, then it helped to escalate difficulty with level, otherwise once put in they took some...

How Many 1st Level Fighters Should a 10th Level Fighter Beat?

Let me play the math game here, this is more backwards in setting some preferences for combat first, and then going from there.. So how many 1st level people can a 10th level person take in this idea of a system (4e similar) Let's say that level and abilities are the main separators (both have...
