Sexism in D&D and on ENWorld (now with SOLUTIONS!)

OK, I'm not picking on you in particular (several other posters have said the same thing), but this touches on a peeve of mine that I wanted to bring up, which is that I find this type of response somewhat hypocritical. The ENTIRE BASIS of this kind of discussion is that product/activity X is...

Joke Names you've never used...but want to.

One of the players in my currently Pathfinder game plays a summoner, and likes to name his summoned monsters. His fiendish crabs are Professor Pinch and Citizen Snips, and the dire apes are Admiral Ape and Guerrilla Gorrilla.

Ki versus Psionic: Power Sources Do Battle (in a semantic sort of way)

I've thought for a long time that Psionics and Ki should be the same/related in settings that have both. But, in worlds that have only one or the other, I can understand wanting some differentiation.

Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Sneak Peeks (Old thread)

While I generally agree with you (certainly when it comes to any larger artwork), I think it may have been a deliberate choice in this case. The item cards are meant to be used as a play-aid at the table, so there's a certain value in having instant-recognition of the illustrations. If the...

I wanna get back on the railroad

You should read Ben Robbins' West Marches series of articles for advice on how to run a kick-ass sandbox. Seriously, highly recommended.

What level of technology WON'T you go beyond with your tabletop gaming?

I have no problem with technology at the table per se. I don't object to something that enhances the play experience, but I do object to is distractions/time sinks. IME, most attempts at using laptops/PDAs at the table end up being the latter, even if the goal is for them to be the former...

Tiefling, Dragonborn : have they gained traction ?

FWIW, he's not making that line up. It was a phrase that was bandied about a lot in the build-up to Eberron, I think from a design interview or something.

Tiefling, Dragonborn : have they gained traction ?

I really don't get the playing-as-dragons obsession. I have never once had a player show any interest at all in playing as a dragon/half-dragon/dragon-themed-anything. Also, what CRPGs are people referring to? I'm not familiar with any that used...

New player asking for some advice/help, please. 3e vs 4e. Which one is for me?

I think that there's a lot of conflation of personal gaming styles with actual edition differences. To use myself as an example, I've always been a seat-of-the-pants, off-the-cuff kind of DM. I've never used significant use of social mechanics. I've used something akin to the minion rule for...

Arcane Power: How long before the pirated copy appears

I will be most interested to see how quickly the PHB3 shows up next year, since it will probably have the most comparable demand level to the PHB2, to get an apples-to-apples comparison.

    Professional GM: Possible Return

Sounds like an absolutely normal MLM. The major danger with a lot of MLMs (not sure about this one in particular), is that they often require you to pay for your own training and to buy initial inventory. While some people are natural salespeople and do well enough selling the product to...

Arcane Power Art Gallery: Welcome back, old friends

I'll take a stand against reused art. For me, part of the purpose of art in a D&D product is to be evocative of what's being described in the text, be it a class, an item, a setting, an encounter, whatever. Problem is that I remember pictures in the context in which they first appeared. I see...

    10:1 illegal downloads

Just to be a bit picky, this scenario's not really possible, at least with torrents. What makes it such an effective protocol for transmitting large files is that every peer is transmitting at the same time that it's receiving. So it's not really possible to download a torrent without also...

Pathfinder 1E What are the best Paizo PDFs to buy with their new PDFlove discount?

I'm not an expert on their standalone modules, but I really enjoyed the Rise of the Runelords, Curse of the Crimson Throne. I haven't read the newest one (Legacy of Fire) yet, but by all accounts it's good too. If you want a more generic sourcebook, I strongly recommend Classic Monsters...

What Would Happen If (Almost) Nobody Paid for RPGs?

A goodly number, actually. I really like Jonathan Coulton's music, a large percentage of which he gives away for free. In fact, most of the ones I like most are free, though I've donated their value to him anyways. Books not so much, though I've read plenty of not-for-profit short stories and...

What Would Happen If (Almost) Nobody Paid for RPGs?

I'll agree with you that mass marketing publishing would probably be out of the picture in this hypothetical world. As for the rest, I think you're confusing incumbent advantage with impossibility. (Almost) Everybody plays D&D because it has a MASSIVE inertial advantage. And I certain agree...

What Would Happen If (Almost) Nobody Paid for RPGs?

Nice choice, since a compiler is actually what I work on. ;-) While that's nice in theory, it's never that simple, even when talking about software. The answer is always "it depends." The compiler I work on is faster for some workloads, while other compilers are faster than it at other...

What Would Happen If (Almost) Nobody Paid for RPGs?

To clarify my own opinion, I don't actually agree with any of the poll options. All I'm sure of is that it would be very, very different. I don't know that it would be inherently better one way than the other (though I'm confident that both approaches are at least viable).
