D&D General The Sharpshooter feat and multiple attacks

That's my observation as well. There seems to be many more ways to get +To Hit as an archer than as a melee fighter. The level 12 archer in my game had (IIRC) +12 attack bonus without magic items. He used -5/+10 as a default on every attack.

    D&D 5E (2014) Alternate caster stats

With some other game mechanic, making the warlock different both in flavour and in the game rules.

    D&D 5E (2014) Alternate caster stats

If it were me, I'd have wizards based on INT (NEEERRRRRDD!), Sorcerers on CON (BRUH!), and make warlocks have no stat whatsoever. Warlock power comes from a pact, nothing else. It doesn't matter how smart you are or how forceful your personality is, the pact alone is your power. That way...

D&D General What is two weapon fighting good for?

Agreed! I think the first pop culture character I saw using two weapons was Nasir the Saracen, from the TV series Robin of Sherwood. The use of two weapons showed that the character was exotic and mysterious. It also shoed how skilled he was, because coordinating two weapons is difficult.

Rules as Law vs. Rules as Guidelines

I choose to believe that game developers know what they are doing and if there are rules then those rules are there for a reason and I should not change or remove them until I understand the reason. This means that my games are prettly close to RAW. I only change rules for a specific reason (and...

TTRPGs: broken mechanics vs. abusive players

It's never worth it. You should always design for the general and worry about exceptions later (or not at all). As posted earlier in the thread, if there's a rule that breask the game then the best reaction is to have the mature discussion, 'This rule breaks things, let's all agree to not use...

D&D 5E (2014) Armor idea would like some feedback was inspired by Nerdarchy video on armor that was posted on YT recently. " D&D Equipment: Armor Sucks! Let's Fix I

I like the idea of armour soak but I worry that it's just another die roll to make. WHich is weird since I like complicated systems. I'd go with a flat number soak, but tie it to damage type. For example a coat of mail might soak 4 piercing, 3 slashing and 0 bludgeining, A magic coat of mail...

    D&D 5E (2014) What is a Social challenge, anyways?

Why does the GM have to figure it out? They can just ask the player. GM: It sounds to me like to are trying to get a discount by using your reputation, is that right?

D&D General Dungeons and Dragons Candy Bar

I have your purple worm right here. Well, blue and red worm, but if you mix the two they are purple. And at over 3lb it certainly counts as very large. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079MBXRRQ/?tag=097-20&ascsubtag=default

    D&D 5E (2014) What is a Social challenge, anyways?

I do it the other way around. The DC is fixed, the players have to identify things that their characters can do to improve the odds, just like when they are hitting foes with weapons and spells. For example: I've decided that getting into the Duke's keep is a difficult task, that the guards are...

D&D Movie/TV What will be the end credits scene for the D&D Movie? (Wrong / silly answers only.)

Frank Langella's Skeletor appears and says, "Ha! Told you I'd be back!"

    D&D 5E (2014) What is a Social challenge, anyways?

I think we have different definitions of roleplaying, because to me making a charisma check is roleplaying. Or rather, is part of roleplaying. There is no such thing as a social encounter. There is also no such thing as a combat encounter. There are only obstacles and ways to overcome them...

    D&D 5E (2014) Making Combat Mean Something [+]

Having played in a game using very similar rules, my experience is that the death spiral sucks. Once you have got to 0 HP once, your character is so penalised that it is almost certain you will get to 0 HP again, and again. The practical effect at the table was that as soon as any of our...

D&D General So how about alignment, eh?

I like the 10 motivations in Shalom Schwartz's values system - self-direction, stimulation, hedonism, achievement, power, security, conformity, tradition, benevolence, and universalism. They do map relatively nicely to the nine D&D alignments. "Real" Alignments? In my Primeval Thule game there...

D&D 5E (2014) How would you do the sword mage in 5e?

To me, that sounds like a monk.

D&D General Why are we fighting?

I think the issue is that D&D still believes the (wrong) idea that there is a difference between a "combat" and an "encounter." If the rulebook taught us how RPGS actually work (the goal+approach, resolution, outcome+consequences loop), what an encounter is (overcoming an obstacle), and the use...

D&D General "It's not fun when..."

I wondered if counterspell was not fun. A player of a wizard only has one thing, casting spells, and counterspell fellt to me like the GM saying "nooo fun for you this turn!". I asked my players and they were fine. Counterspell is part of the game and they were OK with enemies using it on their...

Dragonlance Dragonlance cataclysm and a bit about Paladine

I get this vibe from the books. Over and over, the peoples of Krynn learn the wrong lessons from history, particularly from the actions of the gods.
