One Ring east of St. Louis

Exactly what the post says. I've got a house in Fairview Heights (on 64 'bout 20 mins east of downtown STL) but am flexible about where we play. Edit: I really don't give a damn what we play, game-wise. That is just a suggestion.

Bring all your pettiest complaints about the playtest

SILVER STANDARD!!! Sorry to echo late 19th century populism, but YOU SHALL NOT CRUCIFY MANKIND (or elven, dwarven, etc.) ON A CROSS OF GOLD! Yeah, I can and will house rule it just like I always have. It was just soooo disappointing to see that disappear from the initial promises. If that ain't...

ZWEIHÄNDER Grim & Perilous RPG - a Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay retroclone

You sold this to me a while ago. How long until I can give you my money?

Idea for DC Based Arcane Casting

I have always thought that spellcasting should be difficult and require some sort of check/roll...and have consequences for failure. I just never gotten off my bum to design a system (or had a good idea for one, for that matter). You, sir have inspired me. As an aside, this is the best part of...

Why I'm not worried about Fighter "options"

I am not against some sort of mechanical framework for maneuvers and fighters doing cool stuff (sorry if I wasn't clear) as long as it plays nice with the theater of the mind. What I do have a problem with is when the maneuver system becomes the entire game. The basic combat system should be...

Why I'm not worried about Fighter "options"

We generally play E6 with Pathfinder. It just seems with the more recent editions (3e and 4e) a raft of changes have made thing, on default, more fantastical. It is easier to add over the top stuff than to bring stuff down to earth. As far as enemies go, humans and such are the most common...

Why I'm not worried about Fighter "options"

Depends quite a bit on how you play D&D. We are a bit more...low key.

Why I'm not worried about Fighter "options"

The tactical narrative module sounds like a nice jumping off point. As long as the players are cool with liberal application of rule #0 (as with the rest of the game) I'm good.

Why I'm not worried about Fighter "options"

"That's exactly what I'm talking about" is in reference to your desire to closely model a highly fantastical form of combat. I want to abstractly model a more mundane/realistic form of combat.

Why I'm not worried about Fighter "options"

Have you ever played a fighting game, such as Street Fighter? Well, in those kinds of games, characters often have both weak attacks, which do little damage, and strong attacks, which do much more damage. Why would a character use the weak attack instead of the strong attack? Simple, a weak...

Why I'm not worried about Fighter "options"

I personally like the PF CMD/CMB system for different combat actions. I also think that the skill system needs to be more tightly integrated into combat. The main point isn't to say that martial characters shouldn't have any special moves, but rather that the system needs to be built around the...

Why I'm not worried about Fighter "options"

Spells to me offer a completely different way to interact with the imagined world: you are using some in game knowledge to achieve a supernatural effect. This is much different than thinking of novel ways to poke someone with a pointy bit of metal. On the flip side, creative use of spells is...

Why I'm not worried about Fighter "options"

I have never understood why folks act like the fighter (and by extension, other martial characters) are boring if they don't have several mechanically distinct combat abilities. Coming up through AD&D, the idea that it was tedious to make attack rolls just never occurred to us. Spells were...

Pathfinder 1E St. Louis area Pathfinder

I'm still trying to figure out the best way to meet folks here: I just moved here and I am having trouble finding players. You interested?

    Awfully Alarmed About Armour

I'm not saying AC should be traded for DR; rather DR should be in addition to a high AC (at least higher than light armor: i.e. a high dex rogue should approach a heavily armored fighter in AC, but the tank gets DR as well))

Pathfinder 1E St. Louis area Pathfinder

Looking to start a small group near St. Louis (Fairview Heights). Might run Kingmaker, not sure: will be looking for player input on campaign direction from the outset. PM if interested.

    Awfully Alarmed About Armour

Heavy armor should grant DR: light armor allows you to be agile, avoiding blows. Heavy armor soaks it. Simple, and intuitive as well as distinguishing each clearly (more than simple bonuses would in my opinion).

[Very Long] Combat as Sport vs. Combat as War: a Key Difference in D&D Play Styles...

Man. Read this last night and emailed the link to several people: it was like the ideas I have floating unformed in my head were made explicit. As many have said before in this thread, CaW vs. CaS may be the very reason that 4e has been so divisive. To some, balance is everything. To me, it is...

Is anybody else seeing C&C here?

I came from the transcript page to specifically start a thread about C&C and attribute based skills...congrats for beating on the punch. I actually just got the rules set and am not terribly familiar with it, but when I started reading the C&C PHB I found myself nodding in agreement with its...
