D&D 5E (2014) Can D&D Next Unite Fans of Different Editions? I think there is some hope now.

The problem I see with that is that most GMs are drawn from the more interested players. If D&D Next isn't appealing to the GMs (not proven, IMO), it's DOA. As I said, I'm sure it will be fun enough, but I don't see it as solving their problem of being one D&D version in a fractured market. I...

D&D 5E (2014) Can D&D Next Unite Fans of Different Editions? I think there is some hope now.

As a 4e fan, I'm not convinced. I'm not saying it couldn't be a fun game -- I'm sure it can -- but I don't see a lure that will make 4e players decide to jump to it. One of the players in our group has been running a Tephra campaign, and there's a fair buzz for 13th Age -- very little interest...

    Who's got their print copy?

Got it Monday, but have barely gotten a look at it -- my daughter glommed onto it and has been loving it.

    My Review of 13th Age

Thanks for the explanation. Haven't gotten much of a look at the book, as my teenaged daughter has been devouring it -- she really likes it, FWIW. So, from that point of view, I'm glad I got it.

    My Review of 13th Age

Book came yesterday. Only skimmed it a little, but I'm not enthralled with the whole "icons" thing; I like to generate my own world and it feels intrusive.

    D&D 4E 4e-like games?

Well, for what it does I find 4e relatively easy to understand. Every time I look at character creation in pathfinder it makes my head hurt. So it may be subjective.

    D&D 5E (2014) Playtest Fatigue?

I've looked at some of the packets. I was never a playtester, and nothing I've seen in the most recent packet makes me want to bother -- doesn't appear to offer a lot to groups that like 4e. So I can't say I have fatigue, although I think I've concluded that the verbiage about appealing to...

    D&D 4E 4e-like games?

So, for those of us who don't think Next offers much to 4e players... besides continuing to play 4e (which is the default option), what alternative games offer the combination of story and roleplay with significantly tactical fights? Edit: I should have also said that relative simplicity is...

    Do You Read This News?

I often read RPG gaming news here.

    Railroading, Yay or Nay?

Yeah, that sounds like a railroad, all right, exactly the kind of game I walk away from as a player. Actions should have consequences, but history isn't destiny.

    Railroading, Yay or Nay?

I'm not sure we disagree all that much. I don't think the "soft railroad" is a railroad; it's an option you have made available. People love Bioware RPGs because they seem meaningful while you play them (IMO), unless you're the kind of guy who saves and tries all the options (me), at which...

D&D 5E (2014) Monsters of Many Names - Wandering Monsters (Yugoloth!)

I didn't like the choices. What I wanted to say was "whatever matches the available miniatures, in terms of looks." (My players don't really look at other artwork.) The lore doesn't matter much; I'll just change it to whatever the campaign requires.

Minimum and maximum player/character counts for roleplaying games (especially D&D)

4-5 players. IMO, when the group gets larger than that, it becomes too difficult to get folks engaged.

    Railroading, Yay or Nay?

I'm definitely on the "Nay" side of this one, mostly because I think railroading takes the game away from its strength (collaborative story-building) and turns it into a poor-man's video game. If you want to be railroaded, hey, Dragon Age does it well, and they can provide fancy graphics. OK...

Is This How it is Supposed to Be?

Well, the length of 4e combats _is_ one of the biggest complaints about that version. An hour for a round is more than I've personally seen, but the combats _can_ definitely be long. There are things a DM can do to shorten the combats, but without that, as you go up in levels and the characters...

    Is D&D a setting or a toolbox?

I'd go with toolbox, but I'm happy to use lore when it is good and helpful to my story. When it isn't, I write my own.

Help getting old 2nd player to DM for 8 and 10 year old daughters

I started DMing 4e when my daughter and her friend were 10 going on 11. I started with the Red Box. The problem with that is that the initial book is kind of confusing. The essentials rules compendium is a lot easier to follow. Other than the initial redbox, I've always rolled my own adventures...

Question regarding the 7-Day RPG Contest

Most RPG's will never see the light of day, so it's debatable how terrible the deal is. However, I agree that I wouldn't enter, just because $1000 isn't enough to make up for the sentimental value for most authors, and isn't enough for it to be a good work-for-hire prospect unless you can write...

D&D 5E (2014) D&DN going down the wrong path for everyone.

Haven't played at Epic levels, but my reaction is that if it doesn't work at that level, start another campaign... Anyhow, if Next is what you want, great, hope it works for you.
