    D&D 4E Does 4E fix the 5-minute workday?

They've certainly made it tougher to go crazy and expend most of your resources in one fight, but they didn't really do anything to otherwise discourage players from resting after one or two encounters. In my campaign, I might do something like knock 10% EXP off each encounter unless the party...

No more ubiquitous dump stats !?

And what then for those in the middle, who want to build around a character concept, but not at the expense of giving up so much survivability or usefulness in return for nothing other than the fulfillment of the character concept?

No more ubiquitous dump stats !?

I don't think you want to make it so every attribute is exactly equal in every class, but just that every attribute is at least desirable in some notable way, so there's some tradeoffs.

No more ubiquitous dump stats !?

There's also a reason that professional fighters, and pretty much every professional athlete, studies film of their opponents: if you have the knowledge of what to expect, it's much easier to avoid and/or counter. I'm not making the case the 4E representation of that is good or elegant, just...

No more ubiquitous dump stats !?

I disagree, based on what I've seen. Like others have said, for rogues, Intelligence looks nearly useless as all it does is modify some underwhelming skills. For rangers, Intelligence again is nearly useless. Charisma is also nearly useless because Wisdom is much more important to the ranger...

Will CON become a dump stat?

In my opinion, based on what I've seen so far, Intelligence, Charisma, and Strength will be dump stats before Constitution. While Str-based types can probably get away with keeping Con lower, I think other characters will put points in it. Most players will probably want to put some points in...

    Hit Points?

Well, yeah, that's why you wouldn't choose to keep adventuring if you were low on healing surges. I mean, if after 4 encounters you see you've used up 7 of your 10 healing surges, you'll probably decide you can get at least a 5th encounter in because you have enough healing surges left to fall...

    Hit Points?

Finding a use for a particular ability score is largely irrelevant, because no one is saying that any particular ability score is useless. Charisma wasn't considered a dump stat in 3E because it had no uses. Hell, there were a couple core classes built around it. It was a dump stat because...

    Hit Points?

Meh. It just means that a character will need an extended rest a few encounters earlier. Since there's no real benefit to fighting those extra encounters except in rare cases when a party is time-constrained, then having a couple more healing surges doesn't help all that much. I'm a bit...

    Tiers Excerpt (merged)

That might have been in reference to their spellbook. In the pregen, we saw the wizard had two different daily powers in his spellbook, but he could only prepare one of them at any given time. There might be a similar thing for higher-level dailies. The wizard can choose two to put into his...

D&D 4E WoTC is increasing the amount of 4e info, but..

I don't understand that, but it's your opinion, so ok.

The Warlock, what a great assasin!!

Yeah, he'd be a great character to harass PCs with, especially if a warlock/rogue multiclass works well.

D&D 4E WoTC is increasing the amount of 4e info, but..

But you can do that regardless of how much info is released. You control exactly what amount of pre-release information you access. If you want to be surprised by a lot of stuff when you first read the books, just choose not to read the pre-release information.

D&D 4E WoTC is increasing the amount of 4e info, but..

Because people will buy it? Just because a store owner has an opinion about a product and is willing to share that opinion with his customers doesn't necessarily mean he's not going to stock the product. If it's a dreadful product, sure. But if it's just a popular product he thinks is poorly...

Or he could continue being honest with his customers so those customers continue to choose to shop at his store, and not at some other store that doesn't lie to them in order to get their money. Anyway, I'm glad they're finally doing this, but I think it's a bit too late.

    D&D 4E 4e Monster Manual excerpt

You made a lot of good points, but this is a stretch. There's no skills for Ethereal Jaunt, Teleport, or Detect Thoughts. And no, Insight doesn't replace Detect Thoughts, no more than Sense Motive did. Anyway, I don't mind the monsters. I'm just much more eager for the Wednesday and Friday updates.

How many classes can use ranged weapons effectively?

I'm thinking we're not getting anywhere with this, hong, so I'm done. Take care.

How many classes can use ranged weapons effectively?

I've already addressed that. "Now, I'm guessing it'll be very easy to make a Garrett character in a way that doesn't handicap his effectiveness right off the bat. Just count the shortbow as one of the rogue's proficient weapons, allowing him to use it with sneak attack and rogue powers, and...

How many classes can use ranged weapons effectively?

Minus the identifiably ninja elements, I suppose. He was western, his clothes were western, and his sword was western. He didn't use shuriken, various gunpowder bombs, pressure point techniques, etc. But other than that, 100%. Besides, I'm not sure how this whole Garrett/ninja thing reponds to...
