How many classes can use ranged weapons effectively?

Who said anything about a ninja? If that's the only character the 4E rogue is capable of emulating, D&D has more problems than simple weapon selection.

How many classes can use ranged weapons effectively?

I don't see how having a few preferences is a problem. I'd think that if a game involving freedom and choice couldn't account for some reasonable preferences, that'd be the game's problem. By the way, if you want to continue discussing this, please tone down the snark.

It'd probably be a good idea to tone down the overt sarcasm when disagreeing with someone's opinion.

How many classes can use ranged weapons effectively?

Because I like the shortbow, and I don't like the crossbow. Much in the same way that I likes swords, but I don't like flails. There's just some weapons I like more than others. The reason I play D&D, almost the entire reason, is to play the characters that I like. If I wanted to be forced to...

    April preview

Well, if you don't count the 4th edition PHB, DMG, and MM that are coming out in less than 8 weeks, I suppose you're right.

How many classes can use ranged weapons effectively?

    1) Or the game designers felt that was the easiest and most logical way to increase difficulty. 2) Garrett does little damage if the target is aware of him? Well, yeah, because the whole point to those games was to keep targets unaware of Garrett, so it would have been foolish for the designers...

How many classes can use ranged weapons effectively?

They've mentioned a few weapons get up to +3. As for how that compares to 3E, that's pretty irrelevant. We've got absolutely no way of knowing how a 4E +2 compares to a 3E +4. There's just way too many variables, and most of them are unknown. None that I know of. We've seen very little of the...

How many classes can use ranged weapons effectively?

It's pretty much the same thing done in a slightly different way. In 3E, if you used a weapon you weren't proficient in, your attack bonus was a couple points behind what it would otherwise be because you were receiving a penalty. The same will essentially be true in 4E. If you use a weapon...

How many classes can use ranged weapons effectively?

And in my above example, I did that. It took me two feats just so I could sneak attack with a shortbow, and that still left me unable to use my one known ranged rogue power with the shortbow. And then I had to venture into more feats in order to get powers from the ranger so I had some powers...

How many classes can use ranged weapons effectively?

The only things I assumed about the rogue example were your proposed solutions. The other stuff, rogues not being proficient with the shortbow, sneak attack not applying to the shortbow, the rogue power not applying to the shortbow, those weren't assumptions at all. The other a Of course my...

How many classes can use ranged weapons effectively?

Is this serious? Edit: Because yeah, he fought with a bow. That was pretty much the whole point, sniping guys from the shadows. Occasionally you'd use the sap to knock a guy out if you didn't want to kill him for some reason, but otherwise, the point was to pretty much stay hidden and snipe...

How many classes can use ranged weapons effectively?

For me, the rogue I most identify as a rogue, is Garrett from the Thief video games. He was a thief, sneaking into places, hiding in shadows, and killing people with his shortbow. In 4E, this is what it looks like I'll have to do to play that seemingly simple and common character. First, I'll...

    April preview

This is funny. Not only have they stopped really previewing 4E for the past month, now they're taking their stated preview article and giving us...this. It's almost like they're purposefully needling us. "Huh? You want a preview of some 4E in this preview article? Well, here's some stuff about...

How many classes can use ranged weapons effectively?

That seems like a pretty poor defense. Anyway, for better or worse, 4E's more narrowed focus when it comes to classes is going to result in these sorts of things. There's benefits and drawbacks to it, and different people will be affected differently by those benefits and drawbacks. That's just...

D&D 4E 2 handed weapons do not seem to multiply STR bonus in 4E.

They've gotta do something, because I don't think a slightly larger damage die is going to equal a heavy shield offering +2 to both reflex and AC. And considering how easy it'd be to get another +2 to both with a cheap magic shield, and shields are looking very nice.

    Question about pregen fighter

I thought about that, but a +2 seems awfully nice. That wizard feat from the UK newsletter thing only added +1 damage to cold and acid spells, so a +1 bonus to dwarven weapons seems to be pretty consistent with that. That's why I think that at least some of that discrepancy has to come from...

    Question about pregen fighter

My guess is it's a combination of two things: 1) The dwarven weapon training feat. We have no idea exactly what that does, but some added damage to typically dwarven weapons, like the warhammer, would seem to make sense. 2) The warhammer. In one of the early Design & Development articles, they...

    D&D 4E Stances in 4e? Wooopie!!!

I like stances, but I couldn't disagree with this more. I just...it's such a logical disconnect for me, a stance emulating a spell-like effect in a martial way. Also, I'm not sure I like the idea of a sustain minor mechanic for stances. The only way I could see it 'working' is if the stance was...

    Dragonborn Info

I initially thought hit points, but I also thought that might be a bit overpowered. Thinking about it, though, I'm not so sure it'd be overpowered, considering constitution only affects hit points at first level. My next guess was healing surges. That would give the average dragonborn an extra...
