D&D 5E (2014) The classes that nobody wants to play

My own issue with Sorcs isn't about power level, it's just that they don't play the way I want them to play. I'd rather see a class with more frequent/flexible metamagic use to enhance a few tightly focused spells, maybe a bit along the lines of the 4E Elementalist. Instead we got palette-swap...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Sorcerers: Favored Souls, Phoenix Sorcery, Sea Sorcery, & Stone Sorcery

I think this UA just clarified for me that I really don't like the Sorcerer's base class abilities. These subclasses are mostly fine at what they do, and have some interesting things going on (especially Sea and Stone). But they're all built on a chassis that I don't care for. IMO sorcerers...

D&D 5E (2014) Thief Archetype Using ANY magic device?

The thief ignores class/race/level requirements. The DMG elaborates a little and says that if it matters, UMD uses a +0 spellcasting modifier but you do get to use your proficiency bonus. In practice, it's mostly just wands/staffs that have class requirements, and I can't even think of an item...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is adamantine a metal?

If my cat shows up one day covered in pieces of human hide, I'm going to have some serious issues even if the hide clearly comes from my most hated enemy.

Unearthed Arcana Latest Unearthed Arcana Introduces Rogue & Ranger Archetypes

Guardian Soul doesn't say your armor grows either, so do you destroy it every time you use the feature? I'd say obviously not since that would make it pretty useless - which means the designers are assuming something. But I can't read their minds to know what other things they assumed I should...

Unearthed Arcana Latest Unearthed Arcana Introduces Rogue & Ranger Archetypes

Honestly haven't had Druids - but bears don't wield weapons. Or have opposable thumbs, even. Most of the mechanically relevant stuff the bear form could do is laid out in their stat block. The Enlarge spell specifically states that the weapons grow too, and gives a value for the increased...

Unearthed Arcana Latest Unearthed Arcana Introduces Rogue & Ranger Archetypes

I can't speak for others, but for me the Large size isn't problematic because of power level, it's problematic because size change can trigger a whole bunch of rules weirdness, and this class can change size every single round. It's just annoying to keep track of, especially if you allow the...

Unearthed Arcana Latest Unearthed Arcana Introduces Rogue & Ranger Archetypes

I think the Large size just leads to all sorts of problems. I'd drop it and replace with something like "no enemies may move through your space" since that seems in line with the general theme. WOTC already quietly added "once per rest" to Ancient Fortitude in the download at some point.

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Introduces The Artifcer

My reading is that at 5th level it's actually 4d6+Dex modifier each turn. Base weapon is 2d6 piercing, and at 5th level it's +2d6 thunder damage. But the Thunder Monger is still using a normal attack roll, so it's Dex-based (on a class that is Int/Con), and the weapon requires a bonus action...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana Introduces The Artifcer

I like this much, much better than the previous (Wizard subclass) incarnation. This actually feels like an artificer. The bag could be fluffed as a wand collection (or a mix of items), the gun could be fluffed as a crossbow/staff, so I think a lot of the classic Artificer archetypes are doable...

UA Monks Introduces the Kensai and Tranquility Traditions

I think the intent was very much not for kensei weapons to be monk weapons, otherwise they wouldn't have needed to spell out the Dex/Str thing again, and the pummel ability would be almost redundant. The whole path could've been "pick three martial weapons, boom they're monk weapons now", but...

UA Monks Introduces the Kensai and Tranquility Traditions

Maybe - it still relies on being picky about the distinction between holding a weapon and wielding it. Martial Arts just doesn't work if you "wield" a martial weapon, and without it unarmed strikes are STR-based and do one point of damage. I mean, I'd be tempted to just rule that kensei...

UA Monks Introduces the Kensai and Tranquility Traditions

Yeah, on further reading the Kensei depends critically on how you interpret the Martial Arts requirement to be "unarmed or wielding only monk weapons". Note that the "defense" Kensei option only requires you to "hold" the kensei weapon. So, if wielding is not the same as holding, then perhaps...

UA Monks Introduces the Kensai and Tranquility Traditions

Also, for a Fighter 11/Kensei 3 that pummel might apply to three targets if you hit them all with your Attack action. So then it's 3d4+(3*magic bonus) damage. Still not sure it's worth it, really, but it does scale with Extra Attack.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e XP Chart Progression Question

Also, that doubling stuff only counts for assessing difficulty, the PCs do NOT earn extra xp. So 21 orcs + chieftain should've been 3300 xp spread between four PCs, for 825 xp per character. At 4th level you should need a lot more to hit 5th.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e XP Chart Progression Question

If they didn't all rush you at once, you faced five encounters, not one. Maybe you didn't get much (any?) rest in between, which would make it a bit more difficult, but they're still not really a single encounter. In the first four encounters, only one even clears the threshold for "medium"...

D&D 5E (2014) Shadow Step in dark dungeon - general purpose teleport or abuse of feature?

To get back to the ability under discussion, it might be worth keeping in mind that "dim light" is really quite dim; light doesn't have to be anywhere near daylight to be "bright". A torch (and torches in real life are rather poor light sources) sheds bright light in a 20-foot radius. Even a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ryrok's Feat Tweaks

I was more thinking about the opposite, where with your feat a mid/high-level halfling barbarian can ride a completely unarmored dog right into multiple breath weapon blasts from a dragon without the dog taking so much as a scratch. The mental image there is just a bit jarring to me. Maybe at...

    D&D 5E (2014) Ryrok's Feat Tweaks

CS: I like the idea, but I don't see why the second property exists in light of the first. Why would anyone use it? EA: Seems OK for what it is, but I agree with others in that it's not the way I'd do things. I'd rather have a slew of custom feats to differentiate each element. GWM: Second...

    D&D 5E (2014) "Charge Up" Mechanic: A problem for D&D

I recall a few experimental classes from 3e. For your Battlemaster mechanic, you'd need to change it a little since most Superiority Dice are only used on a hit anyway, so if they're regained on a hit they become inexhaustable. I've toyed with the idea of giving Wizards/Sorcerers a "Focus"...
