    Obscure RPGs

Yep, I have that. Another of the many I haven't gotten a chance to play. The good thing about a lot of these older games is that they're pretty rules-light, so they could be used as a good beer & pretzels game or a way to introduce non-gamers into gaming.

    Obscure RPGs

I have this, and I have to admit to two very conflicting feelings about it. On one hand, I think it's well-written and fun to read. On the other hand, it's a storytelling game whose actual rules could have been handled with maybe two paragraphs. I think it's worth having, don't get me wrong, but...

And Conan should have a ??? accent?

He grew up in Cimmeria. He was never a slave in anything Howard wrote. Maybe a prisoner for a brief time, but never a slave. That's one of the many things that bugged me about the movie. According to Howard, Conan became a man in Cimmerian culture when he participated in the Cimmerian attack on...

    Obscure RPGs

Hmm. The most obscure ones in my collection: Behind Enemy Lines - WWII roleplaying. Expendables - a scifi RPG I got almost 20 years ago. PCs are scouts working for a corporation that runs everything in human space. The characters go to planets that are potential new colonies or which might...

And Conan should have a ??? accent?

He speaks Cimmerian, as Howard said he did. The way Howard constructed Hyboria, it's tough to tell what accent he would have said Conan had.

And Conan should have a ??? accent?

It doesn't make a difference to me, as the Hyborian Age is, what, over 10,000 years ago? I doubt any accent from that long ago would sound like anything we know today. So just about any accent would work. Trying to affect an accent for an age that long ago would be silly, even sillier than those...

What do you consider "de facto" core?

Other - the Big 3: PHB, DMG, MM Everything else is optional. Those who fear and loathe "rules bloat" should remember that. Books I consider important enough to be on the verge of core, at least in my game: Unearthed Arcana PHBII DMGII Tome of Horrors

    Decipher

It wasn't the editing, really, that was the problem. The real problem was the organization of the core book for LotR. For example, there were aspects of character creation scattered throughout the book, making it a bit of a pain to find everything.

    Decipher

I ran the LotR RPG that used the CODA system, and thought it was pretty nifty. A very enjoyable campaign.

Is 3.5e beginning to suffer from rules bloat?

That's a great way of putting it. Plus, the options presented aren't mutually incompatible, which had happened at times in the past.

Real life beasts that need more attention

I recall a write-up for that critter in Dragon, back in the 2e days.

Now is the season of our discontent?

Why would such a thing surprise you? It doesn't seem odd to never ever get tired of doing the same thing over and over year after year? I mean, come on. I can see being a creature of habit. I'm one myself. But I'd be frankly surprised if anyone really played for 15 years straight, every other...

Real life beasts that need more attention

I think dinosaurs in general need a bit more attention. I don't necessarily think that every single dinosaur needs to be statted out. However, I do think it would have helped to have a "basic" version of each major type of dinosaur given that adventurers might encounter - sauropods, ceratopsids...

Real life beasts that need more attention

I think you mean megaloceros for the first one. It's detailed in Frostburn. Beyond that, I'm not exactly sure what you mean about the real-world counterparts having more traction. With dire animals, I make one of two assumptions - they are either prehistoric megafauna that have survived into...

    I'm done with 3.5

Yeah, but if these players keep buying the books, it must mean they enjoy the game, right? If they don't like what you call "rules bloat," tell them to quit buying new books they expect you to allow in the game. If they balk, maybe they should find a new DM and you a new group. Plus I think it's...

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

Well, sure, that's the point. I mean, Stirling wanted a world where the British Raj became the leader of the world, so he had to eliminate potential rivals. The leaders of the US may not have perished en masse, but likely the ones that were left were overwhelmed, just as in the UK. The main...

    I'm done with 3.5

I agree with this entirely. Choice is always good, and I enjoy knowing that there are all manner of books I can buy for D&D depending on what I'm looking for in my game. But I don't feel the compulsive need to buy every book and use it. The whole point of the revision of D&D was to make it so...

Now is the season of our discontent?

Normally I'm the first one to get behind a post like this. As one gets older, time and other gamers become increasingly scarce. However, it does help to switch it up a bit when gaming, preventing a sense of stagnation. I'd be surprised if any group can go an extended time playing only one RPG...

Now is the season of our discontent?

Neither do I. Over the years I've owned, and played, plenty of other games. I greatly prefer D&D, but variety is always good. Playing a different game occasionally helps prevent burnout. Plus, it also helps to do away with the mindset that one has to keep up with every new release for D&D or...

    TSR Q&A with Gary Gygax

I see what you're saying, but Stirling did mention that the cometary fragments did devastate the eastern US. This wiped out the largest population concentrations outright, and killed off even more as the mini-ice age gripped the world. Thus there wouldn't have been anyone with the vision and...
