Are you in the RPG closet?

I think there are some scifi/fantasy fans and gamers who like to hold onto the notion that only unusual people or outcasts like scifi/fantasy/gaming. It's a way to feel special, I guess, and I'm not saying that to be insulting. Who doesn't want to feel they're outside the norm in some way...

Are you in the RPG closet?

In the 30+ years I've gamed, I've found plenty of "normal" people who play D&D. I rarely have seen anyone who finds it strange I'm a gamer, especially nowadays. The only problem I've had is trying to explain I'm not an electronic gamer, but a pencil & paper tabletop gamer. Back in the '80s there...

D&D 4E [4E Players, mainly] Ever thought of defecting to Pathfinder?

I think you have the d20 license confused with the OGL. The OGL makes it so that everything released under it is out there and usable, forever. The d20 license was what WotC could pull or change.

    Ampersand: 2011 releases officially gutted

I know the announcement was about D&D material, but the mention of boardgames got me to thinking...if I got a RPG-specific wish from a 1e efreeti, I'd wish for WotC to truly revive Avalon Hill and bring back games like Panzer Leader.

    Star wars - which version?

Oh? No matter how it's rationalized, that second "lead" is grammatically incorrect.

    Edition Fatigue

I'm getting fatigued with new editions. Set aside the expense; I'm just getting tired of having to "buy in" and re-learn the game every few years now. I realize they need to make money to stay in business. I'm more than happy to buy adventures or accessories, maybe a splatbook here and there, or...

    Star wars - which version?

No way. The number of players in the 1e/2e era outstrips today's numbers. The numbers have been discussed quite a bit, especially in the early 3e era, but it would surprise me if the number of D&D players today even comes close to the number in the '80s.

    Star wars - which version?

I'm a 4e fan, but it's simply untrue that "no one" likes 1e/2e (and I suppose OD&D) anymore. Plenty of people still play those editions. There are entire communities online devoted to discussing those games. Just because they don't have the numbers of players as, say, 4e (and whether 4e has the...

Nearing 100000 members - How did you find En World?

I found Eric's original site a good while before the release of 3e. I'd been a lapsed gamer for years, but in the late '90s I was new to the internet and would search for AD&D sites just to see what was out there. Dragon had started running the "countdown to 3e" articles, and my interest was...

D&D 4E My Special Rules for Nine Alignments in 4E

I don't doubt that's true in many cases, but I think you're not giving a lot of us enough credit. Alignment was something a lot of us took to way back when for a reason - it was, as others have said, a really good shorthand way to define the basic personality of a character or monster. D&D has...

D&D 4E My Special Rules for Nine Alignments in 4E

I'm convinced this was change simply for the sake of change, and it bugs me. I've mentioned it elsewhere, but it reminds me of how comic book writers and artists will take on a classic, iconic character and talk about how they want to revamp it for a modern audience. Eventually, another...

What happened to Gygax's Lejendary Adventures?

    AD&D wasn't rules-light by any stretch.

    Which Basic?

Holmes edition first, but just to tide us over until the AD&D books, which we knew were out there, were available in our area.

Is the Age of Hardcover Gluttony over?

My copy of Unearthed Arcana had a screwed-up binding when I bought it new, but I glued it back then and it's been good for the 25 years since. Maybe I've had good luck, but every paperback book I've ever bought for D&D has remained intact. It's only ever been hardbacks that have given me problems.

I think TSR was right to publish so much material

In general, I actually liked the Buck Rogers XXVc game, but boy did they produce way too many supplements for it. That said, I really liked some of those supplements - No Humans Allowed is one of my favorite critter books from TSR. Anyway, yeah, Buck Rogers is often pointed to as one of the...

I think TSR was right to publish so much material

I had that book. For that matter, it may still be hidden away in my parents' garage. I'll have to check sometime. I recall it being ubiquitous for a while, and I still occasionally see it show up in bargain bins and used bookstores.

would Essentials as a Kindle book be a good idea?

Then they can use the pdf format. The pdfs I have on my Kindle DX, specifically the Dragon Archive pdfs, look pretty good to me, including the charts for some of the articles. At least, the early B&W Dragons look good.

I think TSR was right to publish so much material

The thing about this is that those competing games and settings were appealing to people, otherwise they would not be competing, and wouldn't be fondly recalled today. I don't know if TSR's demise was brought about by too many settings, but rather by way too many books for those settings. Plus...

would Essentials as a Kindle book be a good idea?

There's no reason that charts couldn't be used in a Kindle book, anyway.
