would Essentials as a Kindle book be a good idea?

I have a Kindle DX. I have put a lot of gaming pdfs on it, and I think it has a lot of potential to be really handy. I'd love to see the Essentials books offered for Kindle, but I'd hope they offer them formatted to be more readable on Kindle's grayscale screen.

What happened to Gygax's Lejendary Adventures?

Yeah, Gary had become an advocate of (fairly) rules-light, skill-heavy games later in his career.

What happened to Gygax's Lejendary Adventures?

I don't know how good it is. You mentioning it reminds me that Gary used to post here, which bums me out now to think he's gone :( You can check Amazon; there seems to be quite few LA books available there, most likely from Amazon's associated sellers.

I think TSR was right to publish so much material

I've been playing the same length of time, so it's good to see another old-timer who started in '79; sometimes REAL old-timers act like we're dilettantes instead of allowing us the grognard status we're due ;) I heard of Jakandor and saw one or two of the books when they were released, but...

I think TSR was right to publish so much material

I think part of the problem is that they erred on the side of being safe. They seemed to go to pains to avoid power creep, but ended up dispensing with a lot of what appealed to gamers about D&D. I think they could have afforded to concentrate a bit more on the fantastical elements of their...

Which D&D Campaign World did you enjoy most?

Greyhawk was my favorite. It had a distinct feel to it. It could accommodate a wide range of tastes, from gritty low-magic to a more flashy high magic style of play. Al-Qadim and Birthright come in at a tie for second. Al-Qadim had evocative, well-written supplements, and had a feel unlike any...

    Miniatures or Counters?

I like cardboard minis better than counters. I've had Steve Jackson Games' Cardboard Heroes for a long time. Make copies, cut 'em out, fold 'em, tape or glue a penny to the bottom, and you're good to go. Sample art is here.

Do You Write In Or Modify Your Game Manuals?

In 30+ years it hasn't happened to me, so it's just nothing that's ever really crossed my mind.

I think TSR was right to publish so much material

Green Ronin made a series of fantastic books in their Mythic Vistas line that were along the lines of the HR books, and were as good as anything WotC made for 3e. The Medieval Players Manual is a particular favorite; it was written by one of the better designers for Ars Magica. There was also a...

Is the Age of Hardcover Gluttony over?

Man, I sure hope the era of every D&D book being a hardback is over. I really dug how the early 3e splatbooks were softcover and B&W. Affordable and meant to be given use at the table. I know some say that the hardcovers make the books more durable - and they do, of course - but hardcovers can...

I think TSR was right to publish so much material

I have all of them, and the one I consider my favorite changes fairly regularly. The Viking book was my favorite for a long time, followed by the Celts. Recently I've been favoring Charlemagne's Paladins and The Crusades. All of them have ideas that could be adapted for use in just about any...

Do You Write In Or Modify Your Game Manuals?

Nope, I sure haven't. I don't put myself in a position to game with anyone who would steal from me. Seems to have worked for me.

    Derogatory Term for Halflings

I know I should get the reference, but it eludes me right now... But yeah, "halfling" seems derogatory to me, too. I've thought about having giants refer to humans and elves that way.

    Do you use electrum pieces?

I used them back in my 1e/2e days. When I get a chance to run a game again (4e or HackMaster), I'll use 'em. My players can use 'em to buy lots of ten-foot poles and mules.

Do You Write In Or Modify Your Game Manuals?

This is something I've never done, and would never do. Personally, I don't see the point, though I know people like to do it.

Do You Write In Or Modify Your Game Manuals?

I can understand this reaction to an extent, just not for gamebooks or mass-market hardbacks. I would never write in my copy of the Berni Wrightson-illustrated Frankenstein, or my 1920s-era copy of Caesar's Gallic Wars, but I wouldn't hesitate at all to do so in a gamebook or some...

Do You Write In Or Modify Your Game Manuals?

When I write notes in a book, I generally plan on keeping it. The notes are for me, to help clarify something; a good example is my copy of the Book of Chuang-Tzu. I don't plan on getting rid of it.

I think TSR was right to publish so much material

I disagree with that, a lot. The GURPS books are good, but are much more crunch-heavy than TSR's books. I think TSR's books go into much greater and better detail on their respective eras than their GURPS counterparts. GURPS has vast library of such books, though, covering just about everything...

Do You Write In Or Modify Your Game Manuals?

Back in my 1e days, when errata was, at best, hard to find, I didn't write anything in my game books. Not because they were sacrosanct; just because I knew the game so well I didn't need to. In the 3e era, or rather, the era of the internet where errata is posted almost immediately, I have taken...

I think TSR was right to publish so much material

In regards to the premise that the late 80s/early 90s was the "Golden Age" of D&D...there was a lot of really good stuff. But to call it the "Golden Age" of D&D? No way. I'd say Ars Magica's system for portraying the life cycle of a covenant of wizards is more suitable. Spring was OD&D - The...
