D&D 5E (2014) On the healing options in the 5e DMG

I think most of these can be addressed with minor house rules that don't change the structure of the game significantly. You'd be playing 5e with a campaign packet a couple of pages long at most. I also miss 1e/2e style multiclassing, but not enough to force it back in. I think this could be...

D&D 5E (2014) Sorcerer spell list - why so short?

Frankly, I'm not convinced that they put that much thought into it. The spell lists look fairly random to me. To take another example, the bard list is pretty wide open, with lots of spells that feel at odds with the music/speech theme.

    D&D 5E (2014) What is the logic behind one 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th level spell?

The OP was inexact, that's all. The slot progression tops out at 2 6th, 2 7th, 1 8th, and 1 9th. But you won't see even the 2nd 6th level spell until you reach level 19, so you've got a long stretch in there where you're limited to 1 of each.

    D&D 5E (2014) Battle Master / Martial Adept Maneuvers

I do think it would be interesting if the game provided a mechanism to use maneuvers when you have no dice left--for example by expending a HD to use the maneuver without a bonus, or through a feat cost, or in some cases just allowing it as a combat action that replaces the attack action. For...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

A sorceror in my game got excellent effect by twinning it.

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

Making True Strike a bonus action would make it too powerful for a cantrip, but I think there's room in the game for a 1st-level version of the spell that is more like Shield in design. Truer Strike?

    D&D 5E (2014) What is the logic behind one 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th level spell?

I'd say it's so that the designers could feel free to make 6th to 9th level spells really awesome in scope. Have you seen Meteor Swarm? Of course, some of the spells in this category are more awesome than others, but there you go. It's a way of allowing epic magic in the game without completely...

    D&D 5E (2014) Cost/Benefit Analysis of True Strike

Faerie Fire is an excellent spell! Not only does it give you advantage, it negates one of the most common sources of disadvantage first. There aren't many spells that can transform a disadvantaged attack into an advantaged attack, instead of disadvantaged to normal. If you're fighting an...

D&D 5E (2014) Favorite change and thing you like better before

Favorite: The new spellcasting system and the overall balance between spellcasters and martial classes. Honorable mention: Monsters nicely balance simplicity, flavor, and utility in the game Greatest disappointment: I'm sad that they gave spellcasting to nearly all classes because it means the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Cost/Benefit Analysis of True Strike

Valid point above about the relative benefits of casting TS vs casting another cantrip. And yes, it is also generally better to go nova and cast one's most powerful spells as often as possible. The scenarios above are only indicative, as a real combat has many more variables and possible...

    D&D 5E (2014) Cost/Benefit Analysis of True Strike

Warning: the following post has math, but you don't have to read that far if you don't want to. I summarize my findings first. In the "low-level wizards suck" thread I didn't think True Strike was ever worth it until someone pointed out that it is only a cantrip (which I had forgotten) and that...

    D&D 5E (2014) death by unusual polymorph

Polymorph is an excellent and versatile spell--you can use it to shut down an enemy or as a utility spell for the party. I'm fine with it being easy to dispel by "killing" the new form. However, a typical fantasy world also calls for a spell closer to 3E's Baleful Polymorph where the form is...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

It's true that it can cancel disadvantage under any conditions, any time, without requiring a judgement call. Therein lies its only virtue. But it is also too expensive, because sacrificing an action to gain advantage somewhere is kind of built into the combat system. So I think TS would be as...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

I can't find the post I saw this morning, but someone suggested the problem is not with the way the class is built but with the spell variety offered. I think this makes sense. 1e and 2e saw heavy reliance by low-level wizards on a handful of effective spells: sleep, MM, charm person... This...

    D&D 5E (2014) DMG Preview: Creating NPCs

These sorts of tables in the AD&D DMG really helped me get off the ground as a DM, when I was in high school. It's nice to see the DMG providing them. And they're not a waste of space for experienced GMs either. There are so many tricks that one can use to make NPCs memorable, but most of us...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

Have you considered inventing your own spell? I know the DMG isn't out, but that's another reasonable request for your DM I think. What would an abjuration spell look like that was similarly effective to sleep and color spray? Maybe something like a damage ward that gives 1d4+Int bonus temp HP...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

Possible strategies for an abjurer to contribute at low levels (in no particular order) 1. Take a level of cleric, or a feat to get one 1st-level cleric spell. Their abjurations are more varied and better than yours! For example, Sanctuary can help a rogue or fighter get through enemy lines to...

    D&D 5E (2014) The Ranger

Yes, it does break something--the ranger gets more actions than anyone else. Keep in mind that the animal's basic attack is often better than the ranger's. Whether it would be imbalancing to give the ranger free control over the beast is still up in the air. There was another really long thread...
