Basic D&D: Did it hook you?

The AD&D Players Handbook hooked me for life at age 12. I don't think I've ever played Basic.

    The Reduction of Uncertainty

Back in the AD&D Players Handbook, I believe there was a short essay on adventuring tactics which discussed how a party should approach a dungeon. One of the keys, if I remember correctly, was to avoid any combat that weren't necessary to achieving the party's goals that night. By use of...

The Book of Experimental Might: Now in Print!

I only have personal anecdotal evidence to go on, but I was curious about this recently. My own 3.x D&D group has a number of people who also play in other 3.x groups. I asked each of them how their other groups were looking at the new edition. I also polled a friend who lives across the...

    New Article: Death and Dying

Yes, I read the article. Thanks for condescending, though. I'm simply pointing out that Collins' assertion doesn't exactly fit with the mechanics we know about. This is why I posted -- something's missing, and I'm wondering what it is. In 3e, negative hit points rarely lead to death, since a...

    New Article: Death and Dying

Combine these rules with most or all classes having some sort of healing in 4e -- I'm wondering if death is going to be almost impossible for PCs now.

    Possible Rules Patent?

Didn't Wizards get a patent on collectible card games a while back, since they published the first one?

    D&D 4E Green Ronin's Pramas blogs on 4e or not 4e

Commence "Office Space" references...now. "Chris, did you get the memo? We're having new cover sheets now for all our playtest reports...." :D Every big company is like that, in one way or another.

Explain the appeal of critical fumbles to me

You had people trying to kill you at 12? Damn, that's rough. ;-)

D&D 5E (2014) Critical Hits Appears to be Next in D&D Archive

I don't see how this "critical hit" system is an improvement. Rolling damage dice is FUN. Rolling more dice on a special occasion is even more fun. Now, in 4e, a critical hit means you roll no damage dice at all (or fewer). It seems like a real step backward in fun, to me. No confirmation...

    Too Many Abilities?

My early impressions of 4e from the devs was that character bookkeeping and creation would be much easier than in 3e. For me, this is the most vital selling point. If they simply replace one source of chargen headache (skills and magic items) with a different but equal one (feats or talent...

    Muhahaha, Userfriendly has it nailed

I love User Friendly in general, but there never was a "level cap" in D&D. Every edition* has had some rules, however crude, for unlimited level advancement. Even 3e had a short blurb in the FRCS before the Epic book came out. *With the possible exception of BECMI, with I never dug very...

Do you want Tieflings in the phb?

Put me down for "sure, why not?" I'm in favor of a broader spectrum of core races, and replacing either gnomes or half-orcs with tieflings is a good start. I'm also in favor of dropping the half-elf, and replacing it with something a little more exotic.

Complete Disagreement With Mike on Monsters (see post #205)

I'm all for simpler monster writeups. Anything that makes the game easier to GM means that more people will run games. The more people who run games, the more D&D games there will be. The more D&D games there are, the more fun we'll all have. :D

Is Scott Rouse a REAL Person???

I affirm that I have never, not even once, seen Scott Rouse and Batman at the same place and the same time.

    OMG Fireball, Noooooooooooo!

Well, if fireball doesn't do 1d6 per level anymore, that's great! That allows for higher-level fireball spells that do more dice of damage. No longer will those 3rd-level slots be the main ones used for big explosions. Now you can have a whole range of fireball spells, just like you do with...

D&D 4E 4E: What we think we know

$9.95 a month would be an excellent price point for the D&D Insider, I think.

Pathfinder 1E Paizo no longer publishing Dungeon and Dragon

Unbelievable. I can't believe Wizards is really this foolish. They're hurting fans, game stores, and pretty much the whole industry by nuking these magazines. The home of Wormy, What's New, Fineous Fingers, gone?? Are you freaking kidding me? My day is ruined.

Chessex Mondomat - Factory Second quality.

In my experience, the Chessex factory seconds are 95% as good as a regular one. Usually it's because of minor imperfections or stains in the vinyl, or a slight misprint in the lines. I've never seen a factory second from them that wasn't quite usable. I've bought a half dozen over the years...

A thing about d20 D&D I didn't like, and still don't know why it was done...

Absolutely, it was needed to make the new multiclassing system work. Another good way to think of it is this: in AD&D, not all levels were created equal. Characters were more balanced by total XP than by character levels. In D&D3, they attempted to balance characters by character levels...

Worse Rules that game designers have made?

Iterative attacks have been bugging me for quite a while too. They make rounds too long to play, but combats end up being ridiculously short. One or two rounds, most often. I prefer combats with more rounds, giving characters more opportunities to do things, and giving a more gradual...
