    D&D 5E (2014) 5e: Setting the Dials

I like your imagery. However, when I envision the default "switch/key/pedal" positions for the 5e dials, I envision that they are all off. In otherwords, you can't make music at all without throwing some switches and turning the machine on. In other words, the switch for race starts at "none"...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e: Setting the Dials

Do people feel that this topic has already been adequately addressed, or are you just not interested in the topic? Perhaps I should have worded the thread title as a question: What elements would you want to see have "dials" in core 5e, and what would those dials look like? Thanks for any...

    D&D 5E (2014) I Don't Like Damage On A Miss

My group and I really like the Reaper feat as it stands. It is super fast, simple, easy to adjucate, and makes my younger brother smile pretty much every time it came up, both on kobolds and on the ogre. However, I could see replacing it with something that doesn't generate 30+ page threads, as...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e: Setting the Dials

I posted this in another thread, but the more I thought about it, the more I thought it might be interesting enough to warrant its own thread: Are there any other things you would like to see dials for? I can imagine a core system just loaded with cool options. Just like a character sheet, a...

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

Your last paragraph is a pretty decent response actually. Kudos. However, with regards to including rules/ignoring rules, I think I probably have seen your opinion on this before. I guess I just misinterpreted it. For example, right now, there are no defined rules for grappling. It's basically...

    How to classify monster strength?

Assuming that I am DM, but I don't care for this one specific job, do you mind if I outsource it? ;) And I'm not talking about published adventures, just a tool to gauge a range of encounters that I can safely assume will be challenging, but not necessarily lethal, and how many of these...

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

How? Also, any time I see this discussion of include/not include come up, people have said that it is easier to remove/ignore a rule than make up one from scratch. This is the first time I've ever seen anyone claim the opposite (from any side). Also, for those battles where no one ever hits, I...

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

Of course, Reaper is not tied to the fighter, but rather the Theme. You can also have spellcasters and archers damaging on a miss, for example. ;) It's not something that bothers me, but it is something to think about.

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

Very good points, and I'm pleased that you addressed my questions. :) Personally, I didn't find the autodamage/damage on a miss broken when it was present in 4e. Certainly it does change the assumptions about combat, etc., which many people may not care for (and I recognize the feel and...

Lists of what I am not allowing will be passed around the room.

I don't think it'll take that much effort to select modules or excise options. In many cases, I assume you'll have to make a decision about what to include in your game. For example, under the Health and Long Rest dial, I'd expect to see something like the following: Heroic <--> Balanced <-->...

I thought this website had a really good player map for Caves of Chaos. It depicts the ravine well and doesn't show the players the hidden caves. Crypt Thing

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

Well, certainly, I think it makes sense to talk about the believability, balance, and fun of these types of abilities, because these discussions are often very constructive. But I believe the question is, if you find that the rule is unbelievable/broken/simply not fun (but others disagree with...

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

I inferred that those people probably want it in the game, just that they wouldn't abandon it over it.

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

The thing is, both Reaper and at-will magic missile have been extensively tested... in 4e. The assumptions about combat may be different from 5e, but at least in 4th edition neither were remotely unbalanced. Also, I've seen people say that the other cantrips are unbalanced, but once again, we...

D&D 5E (2014) Poll on the Reaper: is damage on missed melee attack roll believable and balanced?

I agree. Nearly every single thread is about "X shouldn't be in D&D" or "I really dislike this and it should be changed", from all flavor of gamers (i.e. there is just as much vitriol about Vancian casting as there is fighter daily mechanics). If each of these gamers had their way, the...

    D&D General D&D Pronunciation Guide

How should my friends and I pronounce the name of your website when discussing it amongst ourselves? I've heard some say E. N. World, pronouncing both the E and N initials, followed by world. I prefer en-world, saying it as one word (en as in when).

    Base measurement in DDN

My world uses squares, and it has nothing to do with grid combat. :) Fighter: So your majesty, we must rescue the princess. How far away is she? King: The brutes' lair is not far. Just beyond the Bristlewood in fact, 12 kilosquares from here. (about 11.3 miles/18.2 kilometers). Square being...

Playtest report - can 22 goblins defeat alcohol?

The "within" and "ally/creature" wording is also present on all the spells, such as grease and healing word (i.e. you can cast grease on a creature within 100 feet on you to give it advantage on checks to squeeze through tight spaces). It only makes sense that you can heal/cast spells on your...

    Playtesting right now- quick question

Also, since the effect reads "1 creature within 5 feet of you" (similar wording to grease, cure light wounds, healing word, etc.), during my playtest I ruled that the knight could use his shield reaction to protect himself instead of an ally if he wanted. It was cool and seemed balanced. A...
