    Why is D&D for sale?

I saw him at the AM/PM in Baker, California in 1996 at three in the morning. According to the world's largest thermometer (RIP Bun Boy!), it was ninety-seven degrees Fahrenheit at the time. Most surreal night of my life.

"One Click for a Roman Orgy!"

Now that's tasteful! Just wondering how Eric's grandma feels about those Caesary ads.

I think that's a matter of what you consider to be "thematic material." Is an encounter which is appropriate to the genre but not tailored to the specific adventurers in the campaign 'thematic?' If not by an encounter from a random table, then perhaps by some other kind of random generation. In...

    Treasure Generation

In most cases I simply assign what I think is appropriate to the location or the character - sometimes I'll mix it up with a random roll.

What level is your average local NPC?

Most of the games I play don't use classes or levels like any version of D&D, and that's how I voted on the poll. If I were to run some form of D&D again, most likely it would be 1e AD&D, in which case the vast majority of the human population of the game-world would be zero-level. Classes and...

    Support for older editions?

    That's cool.

    If RPGs were cars, mine's a . . . ?

Flashing Blades? A Facel Vega HK500 - sporty, stylish, French.

What are your Favourite Parts of CharGen? Least Favourite?

Turn ons? Randomness, lifepaths, speedy generation - 5 to 15 minutes max. Turn offs? Point-buy, generation > 15 minutes, and too many fiddly bits - a reasonable number of attributes, a few broadly drawn skills, and a standard gear package make me happy.

    Which Setting for You?

Xanth. I'd rather be punned to death than eaten by a grue.

It's Time for Going Away To Go Away

You should've tried Flashing Blades - still one of the best cape-and-sword rpgs out there.

    101 Epic level commoner duties.

    31. Shoveling. And fighting crime.

Does hack-n-slashing desensitize us to violence?

No, and anyone who thinks that should have his ass kicked royally. . . . what?!

How Often Do You Actually Play?

Our Flashing Blades group meets monthly. I also play a couple of one-shots each year involving some iteration of old-school D&D.

Those examples demostrate that human beings are extremely expedient. I mentioned the Cossacks because I just finished reading With Fire and Sword this weekend, but there's actually nothing specific to the Wild Lands about those examples, which crop up all over the world through human history...

    Suggestions for a unicorn name?

Vulgar. Hey, kid's gotta grow up sometime.

    Plot transparency

Really? What if the fireball-attracts-fire-elementals effect was something specific to particular areas of the game-world? There's a right to know that? What if some trolls are affected by sunlight and cold iron but not fire and acid? Right to know that, too?

Henryk Sienkiewicz describes Cossacks driving herds of cattle ahead of their advancing armies to force their opponents to waste powder and shot. He writes about how the Cossacks loaded captives with bags of gravel and forced them into the moats in front of their enemies' castles, giving the...

    Level one...hero or schlub?

Neither. I like games in which the adventuers begin as competent. They're not schlubs, but heroic is beyond their reach - for now.

NPCs you'd like to play as PCs.

Fair 'nuf. Well, I can whip mine out, too, if you really want to compare. I've seen some dungeon masters bollocks it up by favoring their character over the other players, and I've seen those players tell the dungeon master to knock that <excrement> off or suffer the consequences, from getting...
