Commoner has an odd place among classes. I'd set it at -3, or CR 1/4 for a 1st level commoner, just for the ease of being able to tell that one is tougher than the other.

The PCs are all heirs, in a way since And Ameiko only fades out for about 83% of the AP. During book 6 it's pretty much required to have her (and possibly other main NPCs) accompanying the PCs at all times, including into battle.

I think one of the best ways to handle that is indeed to drop the four major NPCs down to 1st level and have the players play as them as pregens. Of course you'd have to find a group that's cool with that, but it could work really well.

It's often less of a lack of concept of "No" than it is a lack of care that someone is saying it. And on being bound by word; loopholes. If there's something in an agreement that can be exploited, it probably will be.

My online groups use character sheets that auto-add the weight of everything they carry, and will adjust their load limits based on temporary strength boosts and whatnot, and it's always easy to tell when someone's going over encumbrance. Aside from dwarves, none of them ever do so deliberately...
