Some D&D Insider bits (Update 9/13: Lots of new info)

That answer about playing without subscribing is a relief. I have friends online who really couldn't afford to subscribe but might want to play using the game table. I don't know if I like the idea of virtual miniature boosters, though. I don't mind with Magic Online, but this is different. On...

    D&D: Adventurers, Not Heroes

The rules don't have any effect over this, though. This is all a matter of story. If you want the players to feel like they're rising up, have them face a bunch of rats before you have them face the bandits before you have them face the goblins... and that's all within level 1's ability range...

Game Breaker Spells - What are they?

I don't know, on this one. With Zone of Truth, it's a simple matter to have the subjects affected simply not lie. "Were you in the house at the time of the murder?" "How dare you accuse me of such a thing! Do you know who I am?" Or, "How long have you been here?" "My feet aren't tired yet."...

    Unexpected Reactions

Depends on your definition of 100% playable, I'd think. Is 3.5 100% playable without OpenRPG, eTools, Dungeon Magazine, and Dragon Magazine? Because that's basically all D&D Insider will be.

    D&D 4E Druids and Eberron 4e

They also have a pretty notable role in Forgotten Realms, which is coming out first. I'd be surprised if they don't first show up there if not in the PHB.

New tidbit about spells and hit points.

Personally, I'd rather a challenge I can work to overcome (a tough monster requiring tactics, and so on), than to either win or lose based on an extreme case of luck.

    D&D 3.x Will 4E combat actually run slowly...slower than 3E?

I'm betting a lot *has* been decided on and they're just not ready to tell us what it is. While they might have general decisions made, it's the fine-tuning of the math that will probably come now and they obviously can't release specifics until the math's complete. Too many fans would eat up...

    D&D 4E 4e Dungeon Design - New Article

Actually, for me, once per game day is fine. It's 8 hours of rest for every one hour of adventuring that's off for me.

    D&D 4E 4e Dungeon Design - New Article

Well, we now know that the Cleric will be taking a leadership role in the party. I imagine that they'll have more buff abilities, though with the other recent notes I'm not sure how those will work, but it sounds like clerics will be more interesting to play. (Though, the one time I ever got to...

Well said. That's exactly what I was trying to say.

    D&D 4E 4e Dungeon Design - New Article

Yes, I do. For a dungeon example, you clear 4 rooms of orcs and have to retreat until the next day... why the heck don't the orcs come back, realize they've been attacked, and set an ambush? Repeat the process a few times and you never make any progress in the dungeon. I also, back when I had...

    D&D 4E 4e Dungeon Design - New Article

Well, another thing to keep in mind is the whole resource management aspect. In 3e, a challenging balanced encounter was (supposedly) balanced to use up 25% of the party's daily resources. Now, with per-encounter abilities thrown into the mix, it can be balanced to use up 100% of the...

    "Half-" races

I've never much cared for the half-whatever races either. My very first D&D 3e campaign, the very first session, one of my players asked, 'They have half-orcs, and half-elves, but where are the half-dwarf-half-halflings?' The fact that humans are the only ones that seem to be half-anything has...

Was there a defining moment for you?....

For me, there were two moments. I lost any remaining interest in 3.x the moment I first read Star Wars Saga Edition. My first thought was, 'Why can't D&D be like this?' Then, hearing that this was a major preview of 4e, that's what's gotten me looking forward to 4e. Then, watching the...

Shouldn't we wait until passing judgement?

When 3rd edition came out, there was just as much of an uproar. People were predicting the death of D&D all over the place. If it'd only been 2 or 3 years since the last edition came out, I could see a lot of the point, but 3.5 came out in 2003. 5 Years before the release of 4e. And that's if...

    Just Not Feelin' It...

While I may be planning on converting, and many others will, it's a guarantee that people will still be playing 3.5. The only thing that makes RPG books useless is deciding to stop playing them. To put it in perspective: There's still online games playing with D6 Star Wars. Many oWoD games still...

D&D 4E Has the 4E Announcement Changed Your Buying Plans?

Yep. I thought I'd never buy another D&D product again, due to lack of local groups. The promise of D&D Insider changes that. For 3.5 stuff, though? Still not planning to buy anything.

Would anyone prefer spellcasting to stay as it is?

No. The current magic system is, as a few others have said, an outmoded design that just isn't that much fun.

    Design optimism, marketing pessimism

Well, for a successful example of a DDI like service, I'd point to Battlecorps. It just offers a couple of the features DDI will, though, (mostly new fiction, occasional scenarios, art, and the ability to interact with game designers and authors in an informal setting of a members-only message...

    Subscribing to D&D Insider

This is exactly why I'll be signing up too. Primarily the first point. I have no current options to play D&D locally.
