D&D General Has D&D abandoned the "martial barbarian"?

May have been. I couldn't say. Not everyone had or used issues of Dragon to play their games. Their first appearance, for the public masses, in an AD&D hardback book, as proper "official" class options, was 1e's UA.

D&D General Has D&D abandoned the "martial barbarian"?

That's an awesome list/summation. Thanks. I was obviously misremembering/conflating several of those to conclude/recall "magic resistance" and "rage attacks" (clearly leaning heavily into the hit magic-weapon creatures, save bonuses, and higher/extra HD/Con that kept them from going down)...

D&D General Has D&D abandoned the "martial barbarian"?

Ok, look...We've all been dancing around the real obvious and actual issue at hand here...We're just all too proper and polite to say it... But it's time to wake up and just speak the truth... The problem with the martial-ity of the Barbarian goes back to one simple truth... It's the Paladin's...

D&D General Why Exploration Is the Worst Pillar

One could always grab a copy of either of these and basically use anything from them in their game to add to their "exploration pillar."

D&D General Has D&D abandoned the "martial barbarian"?

I do not actually know what either of these...maneuvers?...are. OH! For something like that? Damage, forced movement and prone sounds right. Meh. I would say the "throw/knocking prone" is part of the whole grapple attack, so a second unarmed attack after a successful grapple would be...

D&D General Has D&D abandoned the "martial barbarian"?

I think it safe to say from somewhere in late 3.5-.75, through 4e for sure, and glaringly apparent in 5e, that WotC has all but given up on ANY "martial/non-magical" class. Even the only two main/base/"Big 4" classes that are indisputably not fueled or enhanced by magic have magical sub-class...

D&D General How Do You All Use Dragons In Your Worlds And Campaigns?

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, all of my dragons use magic/have innate spell use, as well. Different genus prefer and excel at different things. But they all can use it to a greater or lesser extent. White dragons, for example, don't get magic-use until becoming ancient (if they want). Blacks...

D&D General How Do You All Use Dragons In Your Worlds And Campaigns?

True dragons, the first dragons, were born in the forging of the world. Created by the First, Ahl, as a gift for his beloved Second, Zho. As the primordial earth (having drawn Zho from himself to form the sky), Ahl used all the strength and glory of his ores and minerals, all the power and...

D&D 5E (2014) PC races that a DM has specifically excluded from their campaign and why

Drow. Flat out. No go. The evil elves of the Underdark belong in the Underdark, not traipsing around the surface world in hordes of upstanding redeemed individuals or "shadow enclaves" lamenting their culture, "But we're not really like that." or, even, "Yep. That's exactly what my people are...

D&D General Setting a campaign on a river

So, you're saying you want a game in which you and the players are ... rollin' on a river? ...I'll just see myself out. Seriously, though, sounds fun/like a great campaign premise.

D&D General Demihumans of Color and the Thermian Argument

I think, and apologies for anyone whose sensibilities this offends, but fantasy races -and the games containing them- have no reason or obligation to "be the same/have the levels of diversity" of humans. The "lumpy forehead humans" argument is only emphasized and exacerbated by saying "all...

D&D 5E (2014) Giving the arcane gish an identity.

If I may follow a bit on this... I think one can safely -and accurately- trace the "arcane warrior" archetype back to Moorcock's "Elric of Melnibone." What, if any, literary inspirations there might be before that falls into the realm of myths and legends, I think. The mystical/magical...

D&D General What are your Core races?

Hmm. No core/original demihumans. So, this wouldn't be my existing homebrew world because they are all there and play significant roles across the world: history, legends/myths, nations/geopolitics, those three are into everything. Also, 9 strikes me as really a LOT for "core races." But that's...

D&D 5E (2014) Giving the arcane gish an identity.

If we look at the Paladin...the divinely powered warrior...existing to defend their faith, to bring the battle to their enemies, not just "living up to," but embodying their ideals/dogma/alignment/oath (however you flavor your paladin's devotion these days), meting out "divine justice" (again...

D&D General Monsters from secondary Monster Manuals you got a lot of fun out

I use (and have encountered) creatures from beyond a 1st MM quite a bit over the years. Some repeated cameos (or found in other people's games) include: from the 1e MM2: Behir (a personal favorite that I've used often), Bodak, Barghest, Firbolg, Derro, Magmin ("Magmen")...I recall fighting an...

D&D General Dragons: What role do they play in your campaigns?

Well now, that depends on which dragons we're tawkin' about. There are the "elder wyrm" dragons who exist in a [not-so] hidden corner of the world. They are the dragons who have existed (or are direct descendants of) the "Children of Zho" -a primordial creator entity of my setting. They are...
