D&D 5E (2014) What are the Roles now?

"Board game edition", "board game format", "like a board game", whichever you prefer. The point is 4th Edition was the first edition of D&D to come so close to a board game. It was a big experiment, but I imagine it started with a decision handed down from Hasbro some time during 3rd Edition's...

D&D 5E (2014) Casting spells with costed components

I am sure Paraxis is correct. I just want to add that some spells can be low level but still difficult for a low level character to cast, because they are meant to be easy to cast for a higher level character. If they had to use a higher level spell slot, that would be prohibitive for them...

    Those other two pillars

You can involve the other players in a number of ways. You can ask for volunteers to speak for NPC's, introduce "charms" and other effects, and ask the players to exercise getting into character with each other by asking them things like "Okay, what do you guys talk to each other about tonight...

D&D 5E (2014) What are the Roles now?

Just going by the PHB in 4e, the fighter is a little lame once you take into consideration the other classes' powers. Essentials brought the class back to itself more, with the Slayer build. It was a totally new game, of course, but I don't think you should be so hard on this DM for...

D&D 5E (2014) 8 hour Long Rest and total Healing up; change it to Roll All "Hit Dice" and add that to Hit Points

True, but it shouldn't matter if you want to re-employ the rate. They may take longer to return to adventure, but once you're in town if you have a healer you can recover quickly. Getting injured should at least be a little serious.

D&D 5E (2014) What are the Roles now?

I looked them over. My primary reaction is they're pretty intense. I don't think there needs to be any stigma against a board game edition for D&D. Some would call the D&D Miniatures game one, and the company went on to publish other board games for D&D including Wrath of Ashardalon, the Legend...

D&D 5E (2014) What are the Roles now?

I don't think you really want to know what I think a typical session of 4e play actually involves! I just wanted to point out, for the record, that clerics in AD&D, 1st or 2nd Edition, were everything they needed to be to be big heroes. The same goes for every other class. And kudos to...

D&D 5E (2014) What are the Roles now?

You claim you like D&D, and I can believe you, but you also change the goal posts every five minutes. 4th Edition is very much still D&D, just in a board game edition. The combat roles and mechanics therein were configured for that. No one seriously expected someone who was playing 3rd...

D&D 5E (2014) 8 hour Long Rest and total Healing up; change it to Roll All "Hit Dice" and add that to Hit Points

Just for comparison, AD&D used a natural HP recovery rate of 1 hit point per day.

D&D 5E (2014) What are the Roles now?

Being a board game is okay. 4th Edition should have been called "The D&D Board Game". If not for the classic board game, Dungeon, maybe it would have been! The attempt to make D&D into a board game was both admirable and expected. The cleric was not pale in comparison to the fighter in 1st...

D&D 5E (2014) What are the Roles now?

Hmm. I have to conclude you either don't know what you're saying or you're trying to be difficult. I don't know if I can help you, but I recommend you stop playing 4th Edition for at least a year and try some earlier editions, particularly AD&D 2nd Edition where they organize the classes into...

D&D 5E (2014) What are the Roles now?

I have heard that before, but I doubt it. Do you have some examples? EDIT: Never mind. There is a thread about this, so I'll read it.

D&D 5E (2014) What are the Roles now?

So with all the extra books there are 27 classes and a great many options of powers. This is how they addressed the problem, I guess. The four 4e roles don't change, though. The powers are all written for 4th Edition and it's incompatible with other editions. 4th Edition is a good game. I am...

D&D 5E (2014) Where does the punitive approach to pc death come from?

It was a common standard. I am not wrong about this. How do you get from this to my saying it was the one way, and you were wrong to do it like you did?

D&D 5E (2014) What are the Roles now?

I've never heard of so many classes and abilities? Do you mean that is how many were in 4th Edition?

D&D 5E (2014) What are the Roles now?

The cleric and the rogue were both great at combat in every edition.

D&D 5E (2014) What are the Roles now?

The said "better tools" are in fact only better for some of the things characters may want to do. They are also intended for 4e only.

D&D 5E (2014) Where does the punitive approach to pc death come from?

I didn't say I think everyone did it, just that it was "a common standard" throughout the community. It was intuitive. Every character starts at 1st level, with 0 experience points. I am sure this perception would have been commonly shared. The next time it happens to you, ask the other...

D&D 5E (2014) 8 hour Long Rest and total Healing up; change it to Roll All "Hit Dice" and add that to Hit Points

I would suggest using the 3rd Edition recovery rules, if you don't want to re-use AD&D's. Every day the character regains 1 hit point per level. That sounds reasonable. The spells can return at whatever rate you choose, but hit point recovery simulates wound healing. Natural regeneration...
