    Stupidest things PCs/DMs have done

This story could go either into the stupidest DMing or stupidest player threads, but I'll post it here. Because I was the DM. :) Back in High School, I GM'd a few sessions of the old West End Games Star Wars (the re-releases had just come out, and my friends and I were all psyched about Star...

    Richard Garfield on Luck

I don't know about the last 30 years. But I think it has happened since 3e, but not for the reasons pointed to. I don't think luck has been reduced so that experienced players can do well. I think that the reduction of luck as a factor was a natural consequence of increasing the options...

Annoyed with D&D Game Day Characters

My party got TPK'd by the Hellcat, but I still had a blast. When we fought the wizard and the lava monster, the wizard escaped, and we healed up before going after him. Unfortunately, he got a web ready, and many of us got stuck in the web while the hellcat made mincemeat of us. My ranger...

Is gaming without map and minis really bad?

Before 3.0 came out, I never used minis. Today, I sometimes I use minis, and sometimes I don't. Sometimes I do both in the same session! I find that I use minis more often in D&D, though. When I ran C&C, I never used minis and it was fine. The decision to use minis usally has more to do...

If you replace every plank and nail in a ship...

Isn't the goal of many parties: "We should kill things and take their stuff." So are most D&D parties actually the same party? :) But you were saying that just *one* of the things that defined a party was its goals. Another defining characteristic would have to include individuals. But then...

If you replace every plank and nail in a ship...

My parents' old kitchen table had one leg. Although that leg had a wide base, so it stayed up. I think it ceases to be a table when you can't eat off of it because it doesn't stay up. I mean, some day they might have hovering boards with no legs that you eat off of- that would still be a...

If you replace every plank and nail in a ship...

Yep, you're a philosophy professor. :) I miss undergrad (I was a philosophy major). Although law has lots of interesting hypotheticals, as well. None that involve teleportation, unfortunately.

If you replace every plank and nail in a ship...

Can a party be transitive? I don't see why not. For example: Party at time 1- Has characters 1 2 Then character 1 dies. Party at time 2- Has characters 2 3 (3 replaced character 1). At time 2, the party is pretty much the same, right? You wouldn't call it a different party. Only one...

[EDITION WARZ] Selling Out D&D's Soul?

I usually just say "You can use the core books + [other books I allow], anything else needs to go through me." Beyond some whiny players (who were whiny before 3e), I've never had a problem. But that's just my experience. I can see how the focus on "player choice" in the new rules can cramp a...

You are in charge of what WOTC puts out for DnD.

Variants: A rulebook for modifying D&D 3.X for various magic levels. Contains modifications of spells/monsters/etc. with low to mid level magic in mind.

    Ptolus at Amazon?

Personally, I think this is going to be a really cool book. However, I'm not going to buy it right now because A: I really don't have the money for a $120 book I'm not going to use for awhile (I'm a law student, I barely have time to play games let alone DM them). B: I'd rather play in the...

Do You Use Your RPG Rules as Written?

I voted No. I try to use the 3e rules as written, but I generally just play with the most basic forms. I don't look up DCs in the book for skills, I just wing it, I don't figure out who is surprised & who isn't during combat, etc. There are a lot of rules I simply don't use. I go with what I...

    Castles & Crusades: Player's Handbook

While Gary wasn't involved with making the rules, he *is* involved with making a big campaign for it. The "Castle Zagyg" series will be made under C&C rules. From what I understand, Castle Zagyg is essentially Castle Greyhawk, it's just they can't call it that because of copyright issues. It...

Can't game at your own house?

As I was reading the first post I was thinking "man, that guy sure is a jerk." But I thought about it more, and I'm not as convinced. That being said, I think his saying "you must work around my schedule, and if it changes, you must work around my schedule" is a little ridiculous. To play...

    better gaming through chemistry

Back in the 80's Gary Gygax wrote a book called Roleplaying Mastery that discussed how to be a better player. It's pretty good, and you can find it on ebay (that's where I got my copy). His followup, Mastery of the Game (which focused on how to be a better gamemaster) was also full of good...

Philosophical question: Do games become "obsolete"?

Maybe so. Just doing my part to correct misinformation where I can.

Philosophical question: Do games become "obsolete"?

If you are thinking of evolution in a biological sense, evolution does *not* imply progress. There is no endpoint creatures are evolving towards, they are simply adapting to a changing environment (and not always for the "better" in terms of surival due to factors like sexual selection)...

Some interesting news about 4th edition

I'd have to look at how they implemented it first, but *if* this rumor is true, especially if said cards are collectible... well, let's just say I'm glad that there's an OGL- and that I have enough d20 material to last me forever (or can get it on ebay in the *rumored* dark times of 4e). :)
