D&D 5E (2014) Where does optimizing end and min-maxing begin? And is min-maxing a bad thing?

I have no idea how any of that applies to my point. You claimed outlier personality PCs (reluctant heroes, et al.) were a drag on the group. Because reasons. I pointed out your own preferences can be a sort of drag on a group. Because similar reasons. Again, AFAICT the system doesn't care one...

D&D 5E (2014) Where does optimizing end and min-maxing begin? And is min-maxing a bad thing?

I dunno. It can be said that your preferred character type as described might also be seen as an albatross around the group's neck. After all, your choice to have a lack of athleticism impacts the group's ability to function athletically. Because, just like your worry, that other characters...

D&D 5E (2014) Where does optimizing end and min-maxing begin? And is min-maxing a bad thing?

Usually? Usually not the way we do it. Again, your anecdote is unfortunate. Sorry to hear you've had such troubles. To put a finer point on it, your experiences are not universally "usually". Please stop acting like they are.

D&D 5E (2014) Where does optimizing end and min-maxing begin? And is min-maxing a bad thing?

If you* (the player of any such a character) isn't doing all the heavy lifting, on coming up with reasons to motivate such a character into participating in the adventure, you are the problem. Not the character. IMNSHO. [*generic "you"]

D&D 5E (2014) Where does optimizing end and min-maxing begin? And is min-maxing a bad thing?

I don't think D&D cares one way or another. Besides, there's a difference between playing a reluctant hero who gets caught up in the adventure, and asking the rest of the players at the table to drag your reluctant hero through the adventure.

D&D 5E (2014) Where does optimizing end and min-maxing begin? And is min-maxing a bad thing?

Strawman or maybe goalpost moving? Either way, the question was not about characters. It was about RP concepts. Concepts. Not characters. I'm glad you chose the word, 'justification'. Well said. :D

D&D 5E (2014) Where does optimizing end and min-maxing begin? And is min-maxing a bad thing?

Sorry, not IMO. I'm not a part of the participation trophy, "no wrong answers", generation. ;)

D&D 5E (2014) Where does optimizing end and min-maxing begin? And is min-maxing a bad thing?

Well, I don't consider either example to be an RP concept. I guess we have different ideas of what 'RP concept' means. You can absolutely achieve a valid "hero out of legend", or even "hero's sidekick", using standard array, IMO. AFAIC, descriptors do not usually equate directly to RP concept...

Like what? What kind of RP concept doesn't fit the stat array?

Same sun everyday, AFAIK. *Who's* behavior are you saying is being predicted, exactly?

    Judgement calls vs "railroading"

Sometime back, in our OoTA campaign, while in Gauntlgrym it became clear we would need to head back down into the Underdark. More specifically, we'd likely have to eventually go to Menzoberranzan. Well, my exiled drow PC had absolutely zero interest in going anywhere back down there. So instead...

D&D 5E (2014) How to surprise my players with an unexpected monster?

Ooo. I really like the idea of some kind of huge, powerful serpent-like creature that is plugged into the divination magic of the oracles, gaining brief glimpses of the immediate future. With something like this, maybe?: LEGENDARY ACTIONS The Python of Delphi gains four legendary actions at the...

Dragonlance Joe Manganelio is Writing the D&D Movie? And Is it DRAGONLANCE?

The only problem I have with Joe Manganiello is that he's married to Sofia Vergara. Hard to get past the overwhelming jealousy!

    D&D 5E (2014) Healing in 5e

Yeah. We are currently writing up our own house rules for the next campaign. A little gritter. We also changed healing spells to instead allow the recipient to spend a/some HD plus the caster's ability bonus.

D&D 5E (2014) Can you shove or grapple a creature that you're riding?

How is this related to your "guarantee"? Are you backpedaling? Good move, if so, IMO. Sounds like you tend to play at tables that foster more of "gotcha", or a DM vs. players, playstyle. Which is totally fine, as long as everyone is into that sort of thing. I prefer a bit more cooperative...

D&D 5E (2014) Can you shove or grapple a creature that you're riding?

??? Have you had largely bad experiences with DMs? Or are you your group's DM? Do you do this? Is that why you keep making such poor assumptions of how "DMs do things"?
