TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

Man, this thread really makes me want to play AD&D even more than I already have... :(

D&D 5E (2024) Using general Feats when your ability is already 20

Just FYI since this was the first post in the discussion where the PCs are identical except the STR difference: For a d8 weapon, each 2-pt STR bump (+1 modifier) increases average damage by 0.5225 points or 12.3% over all d20 rolls. For a 2d6 weapons, the same average damage of 0.5225 points...

D&D 5E (2024) Using general Feats when your ability is already 20

I agree. Do the same thing with two identical PCs, but one has STR 20, the other STR 14. Then how much of an increase is it? EDIT: Better yet, do it with STR 20 vs 18 vs 16 vs 14. Because IIRC I thought the original issue was just a 2-pt difference?

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

I thought the cleric, druid, wizard ("traditionally" prepared) were daily? Are any of those not daily?

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

We never went quite that far with it, but yeah in that direction. Like most classes, the low levels everyone was reasonably weak lol---at least until UA came out. ;) Thieves were very niche in 1E with low HD and mediocre combat table (IIRC cleric was better?), but since they had a role no one...

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

Honestly has anything really changed, though? Some change spells daily, some just once a level, some maybe never? shrug I haven't read much for 2024 so I honestly don't know?

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

I'll add that many times it wasn't about having house rules or ignoring rules, but often about interpretation of the rules. While people often talk about how different AD&D games were, I'm surprised a bit by that. Whenever I met a player or moved or even when I went to college, pretty much...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

Yeah, that is part of what I was referring to. In the PHB it says you make a single check half-way through the climb. So, I think many tables ran it that way. Say our 1st level thief with no armor is 95%, 90% for slightly slippery. They have to climb a 30' wall. According to the PHB, you make...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

Really? Climb walls started at 85%, even slightly-slippery dropping that to 70%. With no armor your base at 1st level increased to 95% and just 90% to slightly-slippery services. You should have been making those most of the time. Depending on what you are climbing and why, using spikes and...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

I think a lot depended on how your table ran thieves. For example, take something like move silently. IIRC this is how we played it: If you have a 40% (5th level) and 1. roll 01-40, you move silently and MAKE NO NOISE. Creatures don't try to hear you because they literally cannot. You are...

D&D 5E (2024) Using general Feats when your ability is already 20

Sure that's all great, but when you said you let the players make the choices and then decide later on as DM to put your foot down instead of letting the group work out the issue... it just sounds disingenuous. Since this is going to be an issue at least twice with the same PC, and who knows if...

Deleted. I'm not getting into this again.

D&D 5E (2024) Using general Feats when your ability is already 20

No worries lol. My point is now that this came up, you asked us here what RAI or RAW is on it. But if the players decided to roll, and (I'm guessing) have decided on other things, now the player knows they want CHA-based feats, so let the group decide instead of adhereing to RAW or RAI or...

...what? What!? WHAT!?! He is what, man, what?! Don't keep me in suspense! :) Then let the players drive how to rule this. shrug

    D&D 5E (2014) Nystul's Magic Aura: Best spell combos?

It's outright broken for a 2nd-level spell. We don't use it for that reason.

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

Oh, I don't know. I saw a number of 1E bards in my AD&D 1E/2E days. One of the things to remember is it wasn't really "11th level" like we think of it today because of the XP tables. 5th-level Fighter: 18,001 5th-level Thief: +10,001 So, rounding up a bit let's say 30000 XP to "become a bard"...

TSR Why would anyone want to play 1e?

I would play 2E over 1E but only if you used just the core 2E material. Once you add in the splat books (as flavorful and good as some of them were...) the game starts to take on a complexity that was missing in 1E. As a general trend, characters have grown more complex and the game systems...

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

I know the vast amount of my objections were to the spellcasting aspect of the psion, which I can't see them backtracking on now because enough people either actually like it (green) or are okay with it (yellow). It matters not to me. I loved the Psionicist in 2E, but won't bother playing one...

D&D Debuts Playtest for Psion Class

Just filled out the survey. ALL RED BABY! (j/k) While I had a bit of red, much of it was yellow, with a tad of green splatter here or there. :)
