    D&D 5E (2014) D&D without the Cleric

We don't disallow clerics (except in Dark Sun) but I can count on one hand the number of times someone has played a cleric in a campaign, explicitly to heal. I honestly don't think they're needed for that function. For pew pew though, sure.

D&D 5E (2014) The Glass Cannon or the Bag of Hit Points

I like this far more than the alternative (at least for non-named boss monsters). Low damage, high hp minions are boring. For bosses or "solo" monsters, I'd pump up both damage and hp.

    D&D 5E (2014) magic dragon scale amulet

I like the idea of an item that changes with the user. I would be a bit careful giving a continuous use item specifically designed to negate the powers of every major bad guy in my adventure though. Or... I would make it very powerful... like it absorbs all damage from a dragon attack but can...

    D&D 5E (2014) LCD Gaming Table Concerns

For the investment, I'd probably want to enable physical and virtual players to play on the same surface. I'm pretty sure one of our players linked something like this a while ago, I'll see if I can find the link. Also, I like the idea of a LCD TV because a projector means you have to have a...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you work multiple opponents with Lair Actions?

My answer is: mercilessly! Similar effects should overlap though, not stack.

    D&D 5E (2014) Help! What should I play?

For a tank? Human variant bear barbarian w polearm master and/or sentinel. Pop rage and resistance and go to town.

    D&D 5E (2014) Gambit from X-Men in D&D

I don't even remember what his powerset is, lol. Looking cool in a trenchcoat? Talkin' funny? Calling Rogue 'chere' a lot? :-)

D&D 5E (2014) Why do wizards STILL have to use daggers, etc.?

Yes they do. They scale with character level (firebolt for example does 1d10 at 1st, 2d10 at 5th, 3d10 at 11th, 4d10 at 17th). Dagger for show, cantrips for a pro!

D&D 5E (2014) If the characters are super optimized should the monsters be boosted too?

Ok, it's not kneejerk but it's certainly throwing the baby out with the bath water! :-D You assumed that because two feats were busted, they were all busted! Adjusting feats isn't a big deal. If you think something is broken (and I agree those two are at low level), adjust it. Make it scale...

D&D 5E (2014) What to do if a player keeps reading the adventures

Don't bother messing with his character in-game, kick that guy to the curb. That's sustained, deliberate cheating. If he hasn't already, he's going to ruin the fun for everyone else.

D&D 5E (2014) If the characters are super optimized should the monsters be boosted too?

I really disagree with this approach Paul. Any time DM adjudication turns into a kneejerk adversarial DM vs Players situation, is a bad situation. DM "There is a +3 sword!" Player "Awesome, I pick it up!" DM "Just know that if you do, monster hp instantly scale up 300%!" Player "Oh.. Ok, I...

D&D 5E (2014) If the characters are super optimized should the monsters be boosted too?

This is a really good point I think. Long fights aren't necessarily fun and in 5e, they generally reduced monster hp from previous editions and increased damage. So they were aiming for short, punchy fights as opposed to long 4e mmo-style battles of attrition. Our group is low level but our...

    D&D 5E (2014) Do you ever create a PC off a mini?

Heh, those minis look very familiar. :-) I created one of my first characters from that eras Ral Partha miniatures. He was a barbarian looking guy with a big crossbow. I called the crossbow "Old Faithful" because I missed waaay more than I hit with it in a year of playing.

    D&D 5E (2014) Roll20 or Fantasy Grounds?

Thanks man. Another poster mentioned dynamic lighting which I wasn't aware of, so I'll give it another whirl.

    D&D 5E (2014) Roll20 or Fantasy Grounds?

You actually said the character builder wasn't full-blown, not me. I just pointed out your justification for that (some groups use houserules) didn't make a bunch of sense. I personally find the character build functionality perfectly acceptable in the context of a VTT (as you mentioned above)...

    D&D 5E (2014) Roll20 or Fantasy Grounds?

Not making a fully featured character builder on the basis that some groups use houserules, when there is absolutely a baselined ruleset, is not a great argument. Especially when the product is so expensive.

    D&D 5E (2014) Some things I don't care for in the D&D culture

One thread is fine, unless they end up getting out of hand. :-) I think an over-emphasis on balance is unnecessary in a PnP game, since balance is mostly self-managed by the group; i.e. if something gets too out-of-whack, someone will mention it. Some light 'rules lobbying' is ok in our group...

    D&D 5E (2014) Doing 5ed without classes.

A while ago I played around with a classless system where instead of earning XP, you earned power points which you could spend out-of-session to improve your character or gear or castle or whatever (similar to Big Eyes Small Mouth but with a DnD scope). You could also spend them (either...

D&D 5E (2014) WotC will not allow translation of D&D NEXT.

Wait, so WotC won't be publishing non-english versions of 5e? Or WotC won't license a company to translate 5e into non-english? Or both?
