D&D 5E (2014) The Nation of Halruaa - Forgotten Realms Lore

Cool videos, but everyone knows the Halruaans are the descendants of Drizzt and Catti Brie. This was covered in RA Salvatore's classic novel "The Night of a Thousand Drizzt's" where he travels back in time with Catti Brie to destroy Artemis Entreri's clone army in the lands that would one day...

    D&D 5E (2014) What I learned after DMing for 29 levels

So you just make up the epic levels? If the campaign I'm in at the moment unfolds like I think it might, I'm thinking of extending it into epic levels. Did you ever think about tweaking the epic destinies from 4e? Love it, this is awesome stuff! I absolutely agree on the "why not" part. Many...

D&D 5E (2014) Sidelining Players- the Good, the Bad, the Ugly, and the Poll

I don't think people give Michael Bay his due. Sure, his movies don't make much sense but they have explosions! Big explosions! No one does explosions like Michael Bay! Also, Bay hates people at a fundamental level and hes at his best when he's making nasty movies like Bad Boys and Pain and...

    D&D 5E (2014) What I learned after DMing for 29 levels

Was this a 5e campaign kbrakke? Good job btw, I've never had enough patience to run a campaign that long!

D&D 5E (2014) A question for fellow long time Forgotten Realms fans.

I guess I've always liked FR because if I don't like something, I just change it or I say "that particular event didn't happen".

D&D 5E (2014) How to engage a "poke the bear" player?

There was a NPC in an old game I played in. He was absurdly powerful and he had a particular talent with transformation magic. Anyway, he was generous as long as we were polite and civilised. No cursing, no raised voices, no inappropriate topics. As soon as anyone did, they got turned into a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Critical Fumbles a core rule?

Right on man, no one thinks about the monsters! Monsters are people too!

    D&D 5E (2014) Magic Items You'll Never Give Out

I DM and I don't worry about balance anymore. The last adventure I DMed I think I've given out more magic than I have ever given out, because magic items are fun. The only item I maybe slightly regret giving them is a Cubic Gate since they bloody use it to teleport everywhere. Cest la vie.

D&D 5E (2014) Is it fair to cast save-or-suck spells on the players?

Not really in this case. At least with save-or-suck spells you get a save and usually you get a save each round. No one wants to get stunlocked by a monster but players have a number ways to help each other out with that stuff. Paladins have aura, clerics have bless, there are a few abilities...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fleeing

I see what you mean. I just don't like mechanics like that because one PC specialises in it and suddenly the whole group has a get-out-of-jail-free card. Hell, if there's no consequences to using it, they'll use it in every combat to essentially port out rest up and port back in.

    D&D 5E (2014) Fleeing

What?! Why on earth wouldn't you want to play this out? Retreats are exciting and fun!

    D&D 5E (2014) Fleeing

I don't really see what the problem is. The DM isn't obliged to give you the encounter rating. You have to determine for yourself whether you think you can beat an enemy, or not. That's part of the fun. If you don't think you can, run or don't start the fight in the first place. Our group has...

D&D 5E (2014) How do you, as a player, judge "appropriate" difficulty?

1 and 6 for me. Adventures where 1 or 2 adventurers die because of the challenge are fun because it ratchets up the jeopardy, excitement and tension. But multiple party wipes to get to the end are not.

    D&D 5E (2014) Help with 19th level boss fight

Personally I don't like saddling my bad guys with bad tactics, especially if they know a lot about the PCs. My PCs are just about to go into combat with a very similar boss encounter (slightly lower level) but everything you mentioned... I'm going to absolutely deploy. Counterspell, forcecage...

D&D 5E (2014) How would you conduct an evil campaign?

Depends how evil you're talking. There are levels: * "willing to steal, bribe, manipulate, threaten noncombatants or kill combatants to achieve mission" * "willing to kill noncombatants either directly or by ommission, willing to torture, rape, imprison combatants to achieve mission" *...

D&D 5E (2014) Thoughts On How To Do High Level Adventures.

I mostly agree Zardnaar. The other thing about high level adventuring is that you can't assume PCs are travelling by land, or blocked by mountain ranges/abysses or tie important infodump encounters to landbased encounters, because they might bypass them by flying or teleporting. I've been...

    D&D 5E (2014) Appropriating the Sword Coast

Also, "Ghosts of Dragonspear Castle" is pretty decent. It was a 5e playtest for levels 1-10 set in and around Daggerford. Just be aware Perkins must have been feeling particularly mercurial when he wrote this as there are quite a few "save or die" situations. "Dead in Thay" seems to be a higher...

    D&D 5E (2014) Help - I Over-did It!

Don't worry about it then. The party will be grinning like cats in cream and that's occasionally a good thing. As Hemlock said, its actually not a bad idea to give the party some limited/one-time use items in case they get themselves into a TPK situation.

Need help with a character concept

I think it's fine. The funny thing with WEAPONS OF TERRIBLE POWER is that most people tend to think that using them for "good" ends is justifiable, especially when you literally have voices in your head telling you what to do. Best intentions and all that. "Wait, did you go ahead and forge the...

    Designing Star-Fantasy Races

Sounds like a lot of work man. Why not just take the already existing races from pathfinder (because some of them have a definite "space" flavor) and adapt them to your game? Just off the top of my head, Xill, Tengu, Mercane, Witchwyrd
