D&D 5E (2014) Warcaster, polearm master and learning to love the optimizing?

A good catch. It strikes me that it's more an issue with War Caster than it is with Polearm Master. If we remove polearms from the equation, the issue is still there. Can a character with full hands, utilizing the War Caster feat, cast a touch spell on an opponent? If so, how? Interestingly...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

For what it's worth, I am very excited about playing a wizard in 5e, specifically a low-level wizard. My experiences suggest that low-level wizards have never been more powerful (I didn't bother with 4e).

    I think you meant 4e? :D

    D&D 5E (2014) Single-race, non-human campaign.

As bad as this may sound, I always try to bring racial bias into the characters I play, and I feel that all too often there's WAY too much racial acceptance in D&D. Beyond the classic trope of dwarves and elves not getting along, why would any particular human be accepting of elves? Or...

    D&D 5E (2014) Balance in Races

To expand on what I've said before, I think the best solution is to feed all gnomes to the dragonborn, then have all the dragonborn battle all the tieflings to the death, the execute the victors! Then we can get back to playing D&D :D

    D&D 5E (2014) Help with a simple exp system for 5E

As a player, I tend to get pretty Gollum about XP, so when I DM, I don't mind taking the time to do all the math. There's an easy to use calculator online. That said, I see the benefit of other advancement systems. As a player, so long as the system is explained and I can understand and play...

D&D 5E (2014) Warcaster, polearm master and learning to love the optimizing?

Extrapolation. Polearm Master aside, and just looking at War Caster, spells such as Burning Hands (and Fire Bolt) would normally originate from the hands/fingers of the caster, but if the caster's hands are full (say sword and shield), then where does the spell originate? If nothing else, from...

    D&D 5E (2014) Tactics in combat

I think maybe I was taking the terminology in "combat generally just devolves into monsters and PCs trading weapon blows with the odd spell thrown in for good measure" too literally. I was trying to think of tactics that might end a combat situation without relying on reducing enemies to 0, and...

I suppose if you're clever enough, you could herd your enemies into a portable hole?

    D&D 5E (2014) Balance in Races

I didn't say HAS to, just that it's a bit odd. And it's not so much when I think 'dragon' that I think darkvision, but rather when I think 'powerful monstrous enemy'. Yes, I know there are good dragons too, but let's face it, no one wanders into an unkown dragon's lair expecting it to be...

    D&D 5E (2014) Balance in Races

Going back to my goofy blurb about intrinsic values, there is something to be said for flavor. I generally choose race based on the flavor of the character, and not the optimization of racial bonuses. This can often be counterproductive in some groups. I feel that IF there is a mathematical...

D&D 5E (2014) Warcaster, polearm master and learning to love the optimizing?

I wouldn't call it clear, but reading it again I see what you see. You're not dropping a hand off your weapon when you normally use this feat to cast a spell, i.e. you don't point your finger to cast magic missile, you point the tip of your sword and a spell comes out. I agree entirely. With...

D&D 5E (2014) How would you create an Alienist?

If you want tentacles you'll first have to find some anime women to use as bait. If you're determined, and think it would be fun, and the DM is game, pretty much any spellcasting class could be creatively spun into an alienist. Think of a re-imagined druid, or a bard. Re-skin spells and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Characters you never played...

Back in 3.5 I wanted to play a lawful good (possibly neutral good depending on DM) Vow of Poverty assassin, dedicated to eradicating evil at all costs, and with complete disregard for social propriety. Very paladin/monk/rogue. Or, an exploitation ranger, cutting down trees, and using spells to...

    D&D 5E (2014) What Do Dwarves Eat?

What if dwarves originally munched on tree roots, and 'harvesters' eventually became 'goblin-halvers', then as trade and cultivation were established, 'goblin-halvers' went back to 'harvesters'. Dwarves eat wood.

    D&D 5E (2014) Balance in Races

Perhaps the fact that the villagers don't show up with pitchforks and torches when a dragonborn walks into town is a racial bonus?

    D&D 5E (2014) Balance in Races

For what it's worth, there are intrinsic factors as well. Just about every character I play is racist based upon their own race, with gnomes, dragonborn, and thieflings being hated by all. :)

D&D 5E (2014) Moral Quandry Over Possible DM Failures?

I agree it's an unreasonable expectation. The question was never whether or not a DM should deviate from printed material, the question was whether or not it's appropriate for the DM to deviate from printed material when he is unaware of what those changes actually mean and how they translate...

D&D 5E (2014) Moral Quandry Over Possible DM Failures?

Once the obviously assignable items went to the characters that could use them, it devolved into a 'dibs' system. Oddly a couple of players gave me "my precious" looks when I started to suggest that maybe some redistribution was in order. I let it go, I didn't want to be the greedy barbarian...
