    D&D 5E (2024) Species tweaks (house rules)

I love the design of the species but I think a few miss the mark. Here are some tweaks I've made for the ones I was dissatisfied with. As you will see I love Gnomes and was most disappointed with them. You may notice that these all add to the abilities (with the exception of Rock Gnome which...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

The final sentence doesn't say "As a DM I make all of the choices of what the adventuring day looks like." It says the DM makes choices. The DM creates the structure. They decide what the outcome of different possibilities will be. The DM could actually take away all agency of the players to...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

I don't think that is true re: PCs determining the adventuring day. What if there is only 1 encounter to achieve their objective? They didn't choose to stop but there isn't anything more to do. What if it takes 20 encounters to complete their objective and they are destined to fail? Sure, the...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

I think the vast majority of parties going that fast will all be killed because of the dangers they are taking on. The rules aren't meant to be simulationist. They are specifically for the PCs which makes it easier to make rules that are simple. So in my world there are an unlimited amount of...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

While that is very fast I've been pretty okay with the narrative conceit considering we are talking about a magical story world. To bring up The Wandering Inn series again it has solidified my view that quick levelling is okay as long as the heroes are doing amazing things. Most people in the...

D&D General Eldritch Smite vs Paladin Smite (plus a house rule already)

Yeah I guess I'm just saying that despite them both being called smites they are very different. I think paladin smites are already very strong and don't need a buff. The bonus action makes them play differently than fighters and such and I think that is a good thing.

D&D General Eldritch Smite vs Paladin Smite (plus a house rule already)

There are 2 sets of 2d6 damage and it affects multiple creatures. Compare that to a level 2 spell slot that grants all attacks advantage. The Eldritch Smite could be a good option depending on circumstances but it really needs to not be a bonus action. Since it costs an invocation I don't...

D&D General Eldritch Smite vs Paladin Smite (plus a house rule already)

Paladin smites are still very good even with the bonus action. Eldritch Smite is pretty bad even without a bonus action. You are using up an invocation slot plus you don't have low level spell slots to spend on it. Using a 3rd level slot on 4d8 damage and prone even without the action cost is...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

When I run campaigns where overland travel is dangerous and important I use the rule of only being able to long rest at a friendly settlement (or similar situation). I think it fits with your analogy. I go to work all day then I rest in the safety of my own bed. If I go on a multi-day...

A Sneak Peek of the 2024 D&D Dungeon Master's Guide

This about sums it up for me. It isn't that I don't care about the morality of a company who's art I purchase, it's just that these big fiascos are really actually minor things. The OGL thing was blown out of proportion and was righted for example. I work in a hospital. I get really riled up...

Five Big Takeaways from the 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide

I have encountered a difficult situation where most people at the table want the usual D&D experience but there is a player (maybe 2) who just want to be there and experience a fun story with friends. They end up being a problem because they aren't engaged. It would be best if they just said...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

This reminds me of my favourite series, The Wandering Inn. Being an adventurer is a job and often involves dungeon delving. In lower level dungeons if you retreat then you are leaving it open for another team to get the treasure. High level adventurer teams tend to work on the honour system...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

That's basically just how action and adventure stories work. Can you think of an action movie where the protagonists get to rest whenever they want? Sometimes they get a lot of time to make plans but once the action starts they are in it until a resolution. The Terminator is a good example...

D&D 5E (2024) How well species are designed (by species)

I like the direction they went with species. I think all of them are powerful enough that I don't want to split hairs on which ones are stronger. Instead I want to rank them by how well they are designed. I'm weighting how well their mechanics result in unique expression in the game most...

D&D 5E (2024) How do we feel about 2024 Feats? (Origin vs Others)

Average damage is not the only factor. When you roll a 1 on a d12 it improves the damage on that attack by a lot. And that can often be the difference between felling the monster or not. Savage Attacker has some benefit on a turn where all damage was above average since it isn't a reroll but...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

People got hung up on the word 'deadly' too so makes sense to remove it. All it used to mean was that there was a chance of character death. It didn't actually mean deadly I'm the sense that most people use the term.

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

Yeah, in my experience of how people on forums describe their easy experience with the game there are a few factors that come up: Resting whenever you want with no repercussions. All monsters played like zombies. Having difficulty figuring out how to run monsters because their stat block is...

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

Yeah, but I think the wording allowed for more stretching of intent. Now that it is spelled out they need to specifically say they are waiting 16 hours before adventuring.

They also spell out now that a long rest can only be taken 16 hours after the previous long rest. (A party might say they wait 16 hours to enter the dungeon but that is really stretching things.)

Dungeons & Dragons Has Done Away With the Adventuring Day

Yeah I only play published adventures and with the exception of overland travel they all follow the guidelines. In most cases they even spell out what happens if the party takes a long rest in the middle of the adventure (usually either failing the objective or it gets interrupted).
