    D&D 5E (2014) A death save house rule proposal

I really like this. Without playing with it I suggest the following: Drop to 0: You lose Concentration and gain the Prone condition which you may not end by standing up until you have any HP. You may not take reactions and you may only take an action or bonus action, not both. You may also only...

    D&D 5E (2024) Monster Manual Organisation

A benefit of the new way is that it is nicer to explore the book. Before there was a big glut of the same stuff in D for demons, devils, and dragons. Now that they are dispersed throughout as well as NPCs, it's fun to come across different sorts of monsters on every page. Another thing that...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Monster Manual (2025)

I have it in hand and it is gorgeous. The choices of layout, colour, font, and art placement makes it easier to read than the digital images suggest. And most importantly, I got hit with nostalgia of flipping through 2e monster manuals when I was a kid. The 3e and 2014 books did not do that...

D&D General Anyone else notice this?

My game, on average, ends up around the 1/3 each of exploration, combat, and social interaction that 5e is designed around. The campaign theme is going to skew towards one or two of those more than others but overall it's about even. I don't think I'm alone in this.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

Yeah, I think it is best to wait until the MM to play with the new rules. I only adopted them because we happened to be starting up a new campaign a couple weeks after the PHB was released.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

I agree with you except I think plenty of people are excited to play it. They're just not talking about it online. For the last 10 years I've seen people say over and over that D&D is not actually popular and WotC are lying about how many people are playing because those people aren't seeing...

    Invisibility magic items seem overvalued

I believe it is also a nod to The One Ring. Truly a legendary item.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

I would normally say that it isn't okay to call out authors and designers like this but he has really opened that up by effectively taking these shots at the current designers. So yeah, agree. Has very 'how do you do fellow kids' vibes.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

I'm reading the '5.5' thing from Mearls as a pejorative way for him to refer to the update.

What action specifically did they take? Did they make the 'attempt'? How so? I don't think there was ever any action actually taken.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

"I was never a fan of 5e" and also I don't like all these 5e things sums up the reaction to 2024. The vast majority of the people I've seen who don't like 2024 also don't like 2014. It's fine to not like 5e of course but it is a bit disingenuous to speak specifically to certain products as...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

I actually think this is completely within their goals. They know people love 5e and I don't think they wanted to make an update that was so different from it that people would feel pressured to update it. They really do want it to be backwards compatible and for people to keep playing 2014 5e...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

The D&D movie didn't do as well as hoped but was also not a bomb. Its performance likely had a lot more to do with general theatre fatigue and poor timing. The number of D&D Beyond accounts went up after, just as they had been. They probably would have gone up a tiny bit more, but even if 1000...

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

I just don't think 'stumbled' is the right framing. I think D&D is still doing well and people are still playing it. No doubt the rate of sales has declined but, to use the analogy, that seems like a runner slowing out of their sprint rather than stumbling.

WotC Mike Mearls: "D&D Is Uncool Again"

I don't think 2014 vs 2024 is the right way to look at it. It isn't a new edition and people who own the 2014 books can and will be continuing to play with them. I don't see that as a diminishment of D&D. 10 years was the right amount of time for an update and I think they went about it the...

    D&D 5E (2024) D&D Monster Manual (2025)

Reminds me of the 2018 horror movie Annihilation. There are some beautiful creatures in it which are also somewhat wrong and that amps up the tension.

The Gith Are Now Aberrations in Dungeons & Dragons

It is more about where they live. From what I can see, if their communities have been on the material plane for some time they are humanoids. If they reside in the upper or lower planes, the feywild, astral plane, limbo, etc. then they have a different type. This is a neat sort of world...

The Gith Are Now Aberrations in Dungeons & Dragons

Yeah, D&D uses magical logic not real science. They are aberrations because their story is of the far realm. That makes perfect sense, just not scientific sense.

    D&D 5E (2024) Monster Manual 2025 Stat Block Compilation

My rule of thumb is that 6 PCs are twice as strong as 4 PCs. One of the many reasons I don't play with that many. The 2014 DMG had some guidance about the multiplication effect but not sure about 2024.
