D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

So with the extreme conditions of these examples you agree the standard rule is that you can see and invisible creature until it hides or some other circumstance intervenes. After all, the rogue does notice the invisible gargoyle move into the other room to follow it and the wizard needs a...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

I don't think anybody really disputes that there can be exceptions that require DM ruling. What I am saying is 2+2 is the rule, 3+1 can happen. Your sole defense seems to rely around proving a negative. There is a lot of things that the rules don't say you can't do, that doesn't make those...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

I agree with this assessment. If not in every response, I have generally included that DM's can rule either way as the situation presents itself. I would say we all in essence agree that a DM ruling can override the default rule, it just getting at what the rules say that default is.

But any other way of becoming undetected in combat is a ruling answer and not a rules answer unless you can point to a set of specific rules to support it.

Except it does in an offhand way that a Stealth roll would still be used to determine how unnoticeable you are. An invisible creature running through the forest not attempting to Stealth (Hide) would still be noticed. The reason the rules for invisibility in combat is so important is it...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

Please feel free to provide the rules that state something goes undetected without making a Stealth check to Hide. The wording in the Players Handbook seems to suggest that not being hidden (detectable) is the default. Quotes come from the only basic Players Handbook. "The DM decides when...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

No, i am saying the opposite, damage is applied THP the same as regular HP. It comes after Saves and resistance/immunity. It would also occur after Vulnerability is not applied. It is not a modification on the damage taken, it an additional form of HP that damage is applied to first.

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

Temp hit points existed before 5th. While all that you said is true, damage applies to THP the same as regular HP. It is not really a force field, the actual form depends on the source that provides and could be anything from luck, higher morale, or almost any form of the non-meat definition...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

I agree with fireball since it effects all targets at once. Magic Missile is multiple single darts each doing its own separate 1d4+1 damage. I don't know anybody who only rolls a single die for all missiles.. It would take only one roll of '1' for most players I play with to bag that. They...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

I agree with you. Not only that, I about set of a whole bit of raging. The DM can't Metagame because ... he is part of the metagame itself. He is the purveyor or the rules and controller of the world itself. He has to craft responses (both positive and negative) to the players actions. The...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

Even if that was true, which I still am doubtful, the bonus damage would only apply to one application of that damage. So if you rolled a 2, you would do 3, 3, 3+INT bonus.

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

Temp HP are treated just like regular HP when it comes to. The only thing that reduces damage before resistance that I know of is the Abjuration Wizard force field (maybe Shield Guardian damage reduction, but I don't have the rules for that with me). I would like to see where you see that they...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

I would really like to see where you get this. Each dart is an individual source of 1d4 + 1 damage. I'm pretty sure that Empowered Evocation is applied only to one of the darts much like the Sorcerer's Elemental Affinity would be applied to a single Scorching Ray.

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

I think statements like this is why he thinks you believe becoming invisible makes you automatically undetectable. It is your base assumption that he may be commenting on and you consider the being detected the exception, such as with keen senses like you noted later.

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

I apologize for using English here. You should be able to talk about 5th edition without everything being a key word and I expected most to understand hidden as being the result of the Hide action. I remain unconvinced that the basic premise has changed for Invisibility. By default, you know...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

As someone who has engaged with you over the issue, your responses have come across stronger on the side of creatures being automatically hidden. Using such words as "contradict" usually imply an opposite ruling to what was originally provided. Crawford did not contradict the current ruling...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

RAW really isn't a strong a case in 5th as previous versions. Notice how a podcast by Crawford changes the whole discussion on what is RAW (or RAI if you must) about Perception, Invisibility, and Hiding. To dismiss such RAI because you don't like the results also weakens the case for such...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

Since they never have brought this up as an issue, I assume they came to the same understanding I have without the benefit of my ruling. They make use of the elven trance to set their watches for the long rest, but they end up recovering their resources at the same time as everybody else...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

Now you just need to find the Rule that says sleep is equal to a long rest. Note that there has been a discussion that would indicate one does not need to sleep to get the benefit of a long rest. I know a DM that interprets this to mean non-elves need 8 hours of sleep to avoid exhaustion and...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

Well, then you should have no problems with the Elf still needing a full 8 hours to get the benefit of a Full Rest as is in the rules. I had a player that always debated this way. Starts with first convincing you that the rule he wants is has no mechanical benefit and then abuses it...
