D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

Actually, it is a Rules answer on the D&D site making it at the very least RAI with an explanation of why it is the RAW and very much qualifying it for this discussion: https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/rules-answers-september-2015 You seem to think there is a tactical advantage...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

Looking back on some of your previous posts on this, I would say "might" is not a full contradiction. It is true that the rules doesn't say that you are automatically detected, just as it doesn't say you aren't automatically undetected. It just tells you how you may become hidden/undetected if...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

Don't know about the bad twitter ruling, but the Sage Advice article indicates that Trance is not intended to reduce a long rest. The article does indicate that he doesn't really think allowing it shorten it would break the game, making at least RAI. I think the part that is RAW is that sleep...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

Much of it is how the Invisible condition is worded. You are unseen and for the purposes of hiding you are treated as being heavily obscured and can be detected by noise or tracks it makes. It doesn't automatically assume you are hiding. Being heavily obscured allows you to hide/stealth as...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

It would not be unreasonable for the DM to rule that the Invisible Stalker (or some other creature made invisible at some time prior to the character entering the room) made a Stealth check before anyone even entered the room or gets Passive Stealth (continually make a Stealth action over a...

D&D 5E (2014) What Rules do you see people mistake or misapply?

Elven Trance. It does not reduce the amount of time required for the elf to complete a Long rest, it just changes the amount that must be spent fully resting/sleeping and increases the amount time spent in light activity.

    D&D 5E (2014) Hiding mid-battle; surprise or not surprise?

Not really a misunderstanding as making a DM ruling to allow the Assassin the effect of one of its abilities in a situation that makes sense. Obviously I'm not going to halt the already active combat and the Rogue will still need to set his place in the Initiative order as he enters combat...

    D&D 5E (2014) Hiding mid-battle; surprise or not surprise?

I have allowed a chance at a player gaining surprise if they are entering an existing combat from surprise for the first time (ie. not participated in any previous rounds and Stealth beats all Passive Perceptions). I have had some assassins try to convince me that they automatically get their...

D&D 5E (2014) The Dangers of Overreliance on Leomund's Tiny Hut (3rd Level Spell)

Did you just make the comparison of one baseball team going easier on a weaker team to the DM making the game more challenging toward the PC. I would say this example that the DM is going easy in the same way by NOT challenging the PC's preconceived "safety" of LTH and the allowance of a long...

D&D 5E (2014) Am I missing something about Conjure Animal

You think this is annoying, wait until you get Animate Objects - tiny sized objects. I would talk to the player in question. Sure, the smaller CR many creatures is far more bang for the buck, especially for those that like to throw lots of dice, but there are some higher CR options that are...

    D&D 5E (2014) Druids and taxidermy

This makes me think: A druid walks into a Taxidermy shop and says "Excuse me, I am looking for my brother ..." Maybe your druid will be more focused on what he is going to do to the taxidermist than picking up new forms. My next character should be a LE Druid looking to preserve nature.

    D&D 5E (2014) Druids and taxidermy

True. I usually just assume a Druid knows all common Beasts and a fair number of giant ones. More exotic beasts would require a reasonable background or in game experience.

    D&D 5E (2014) RAW weapon question

Had a party do this to a Fire Giant once (really good vs. really bad roll). Taking a creatures damage from 6d6+6 to 3+6 twice a round really changes the scope of the battle. Of course then the Giant started grappling and throwing stuff, so really just changed from one problem to another.

    D&D 5E (2014) I hate rapiers. Do you?

There are plenty that have nightmares about my Halfling Paladin of Mask riding into battle on his Giant Weasel/Mastiff (DM dependent) and smiting off the kneecaps of his foes. It doesn't take long for him an his opponents to literally see "eye to eye". The only thing more frightening is when...

D&D 5E (2014) Warlock, Hex, and Short Rests: The Bag of Rats Problem

Well, that is more my experience, but I am in a low market area with on average 14/week at AL on Saturday. I usually recommend most new players ignore the internet and guides until they get a few characters under their belt they way they want to play them. Really like what happens when people...

D&D 5E (2014) Warlock, Hex, and Short Rests: The Bag of Rats Problem

Some people seem to take a very narrow definition of RAW that I didn't want to deal with it. Fifth is about rulings, and I would much rather claim rulings based on RAW than try to fit everyone idea of what constitutes RAW. I'm not really as draconian as this sounds and do adjust to match a...

D&D 5E (2014) Warlock, Hex, and Short Rests: The Bag of Rats Problem

I generally allow that characters "just know" as they gain access to greater power. After all, to gain that additional power, the Warlock/Ranger must expend a higher level slot (especially in the case of the Ranger) and it would be strange for them to do so without knowing they had that slot...

D&D 5E (2014) Warlock, Hex, and Short Rests: The Bag of Rats Problem

I have no problem with Warlock's maintaining concentration through a short (or long) rest to maintain Hex through its duration. Otherwise, why have that duration when the rests are somewhat expected. I do have an issue with the rest and then I rest attitude. For me, the characters must...

D&D 5E (2014) Party composition post your suggestion

My first pick would always be what the player most wants to play as 5th is very forgiving in party composition requirements. Assuming the list is based on what the player would want to play, I would go with the War Domain Theurge Wizard from one of the UA articles. Very open to a wide variety...

D&D 5E (2014) Warlock, Hex, and Short Rests: The Bag of Rats Problem

I think you missed my point of why I use the rest mechanics. There are multiple issues that can arise by allowing back to back rests. I just wrap them all up into a single ruling instead of denying specific instances. Now if he is able to take the time to catch himself a bag of rats (at it is...
