D&D 5E (2014) Warlock, Hex, and Short Rests: The Bag of Rats Problem

My issue with the "Bag of Rats" lies more rest than rest. Probably because this opens a wide variety of issues for other short rest based mechanics other than just the Warlock having full spell slots (Sorclock pumping Sorcerer points with Warlock spell slots, fighters speed healing). The rules...

D&D 5E (2014) Warlocks and Hex and the "daily morning short rest"

Best rule I have seen for this is going 24 hours without 8 hours of sleep (4 hours meditation for elves) causes 1 level of exhaustion that can only be removed by sleeping the requisite number of hours (similar to Eating and Drinking rules). Note that this does not have to be contiguous so it is...

UA Monks Introduces the Kensai and Tranquility Traditions

Seems to me you have two separate and intersecting groups of weapons. First ou have Monk Weapons as defined by PH. Then you have Kensei weapons that are Martial Weapons you are proficient with. Monk weapons should still work as Monk Weapons (such unarmed attack). Then you get the subset of...

    Request: Reduce DM Award Gold

Considering you can't get Faction or do Special Missions through DMing, I would say those Magic items are safe. Also, the while the DM may start with some extra gold at the beginning, regular PC will still outpace this at the higher tiers.

D&D 5E (2014) Parts of the game that get a lot of hate but you love

Interesting. I have found that when players get the drop on a creature, they want it to work for them exactly the way that DM did it. Usually as DM, I am the one explaining that combat and surprise don't work that way. As for the subject, I would have to agree on concentration and the rest...

D&D 5E (2014) Characters are not their statistics and abilities

For rolled stats I give each player and myself an index card. Everyone rolls one set of stat rolls of 4d6 keep best. I then take the index cards and throw out the best and the worst set. Players are free to use any of the remaining set of stats.

    D&D 5E (2014) UA Warforged vs. Keith Baker's Warforged

I wouldn't say useless, just more useful for different players. My Mountain Dwarf Gold Dragon Sorcerer makes use of both Medium armor and Dwarven weapon proficiency. Sure, he throws around the bigger spells most the time, but occasionally likes to face things as a dwarf and bang it on the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Arcane/Druidic Foci and Holy Symbols

My Halfling Paladin of Mask uses a shield painted black with the symbol of mask painted in a glossier shade of black.

VOLO'S GUIDE - Check Out This Froghemoth Preview

I would interpret that in the worst possible way for the characters. If the Froghemouth has 2 tentacles available it makes both of those attacks. Then it can also use it's Tongue attack or Bite attack (character within 5'). If it is successful on the Tongue attack, it gets to make a bonus...

    D&D 5E (2014) Totally underwhelmed by 5e bladesinger, am I missing something?

This was AL, so skeleton's don't carry over week to week and desecrating graveyards for materials would be considered both Evil and non-Lawful (outside of scope allowed AL alignments). The player in question was good at self-limiting and found 3-4 just fine in most cases. Enough to make use of...

    D&D 5E (2014) Totally underwhelmed by 5e bladesinger, am I missing something?

Good thing it is difficult for a Necro to be running around with 30 Skeleton archers, or I should say an easy thing to keep one from running around with a small army of undead. The one I've DMed and played with never went beyond 4. Usually could get away with disguising 2 while in town, and...

    Request: Reduce DM Award Gold

OK, so with 3000 xp and 1500 gp you can either be 4th with Plate (and nothing else other than starting equipment) or you can be 5th and some amount of gear worth up to 1480 gp that does not include Of course you can further spend DM credit to get a little more gold. Keep in mind you needed to...

    Request: Reduce DM Award Gold

How many adventures would it take for a DM to earn that much experience and gold? How much experience and gold does the DM earn only considering running each of the adventures once? Does this take into account that the characters built organically would have magic items not available to the...

D&D 5E (2014) Divine smite paladin, infinite times pr round? And divine smite on ranged attacks?

This is kind of form matches function. Paladin's deliver their smite as they hit their opponent with their weapon providing the conduit of that power. With a ranged attack, there is no direct conduit between Paladin and opponent, so no divine smite. Using homerules, if someone really wanted...

D&D 5E (2014) Little rules changes that still trip you up

I don't know any DM's that would consider using Thieves Tools (Use an object) as a free item interaction to open a lock. I think the best you can do is be a Thief sub-class and use your bonus action to pick the lock and attack with your action. Arcane trickster may be able to as well if their...

D&D 5E (2014) Little rules changes that still trip you up

In a similar vein to the Surprise argument, I run into some players that insisted that the rule is that Assassins get Assassinate auto-crit anytime they beat their opponent in initiative and that qualifies as the opponent being surprised/unaware.

    Armor skills

I am looking at the OLD Careers book and I am having trouble determining how to get Armor skills. The only Race or Careers that have [Combat] skills are Orc and Gladiator and none have the specific Armor skill listed. At best, I can see them being considered defensive skills even though they...
