D&D 4E Miniless combat and retain tactical aspects of 4E?

The greatest reason is because miniatures, atleast in MY group, tends to mean such a stark contrast between "combat" and other forms of gaming that it becomes jarring, dividing the gaming experience into two separate "parts". I prefer that it all runs "smoothly". So, tell me about any "Option...

D&D 4E Miniless combat and retain tactical aspects of 4E?

So, I've been considering if it is even at all possible to retain the "tactical" aspect/feel of D&D4 and not use miniatures? Has anyone tried something like this? Any luck? Suggestions? Ideas to share?

Full roster of PHB3 races known yet?

The last word I heard are either speculations, or teneous at best. Going by what has been said, I believe there has been a WotC reference to Goblins as a suggested race.

    Surviving as a Shaman

Three magic weapons to use: Totemic Warclub, Totemic Spear and Alfsair Spear all can be used as both weapon and implement. General advice: Boost your Int, preferably every time you get a chance. I would recommend a starting spread of 12, 12, 8, 16, 16, 10. This gives you a starting AC of 15 and...

    True20 question

It all depends on what kind of combat you want. True20 combat is often lethal, scary and harsh, especially on those whom haven't focused on it. An adept without combat-focused powers is easily in a :):):):):):) situation when swords are drawn. I like this, some hate it. So it depends on what...

Question: Druid Multiclass & Wild Shape

He does however gain one of the Beast At-Wills as an Encounter ability, which means that he can make one Melee attack, once per encounter.

    Bear Shaman tips?

Awesome to hear that there is such a rule - where can I find that? Because the Opportunity Attack section clearly states it as a subheading under Opportunity Actions and I'd love to have a definite wording somewhere! :D

    Bear Shaman tips?

One thing that came up in our game - If an enemy is adjacent to my Spirit and is pushed away, he is leaving an adjacent square and not shifting, thus can I use my Opportunity Action? Opportunity Attacks <- note attacks here, say that forced movement don't provoke, but there is nothing about...

    Bear Shaman tips?

Evil is a point-of-view. To the Bullywugs we are slaughtering - yeah, we are the incarnations of evil. To our people, whom we are avenging the loss of our Goblin brothers and sisters by the vicious Bullywug raiders who have attacked our tribal territory - we are heroes.

D&D 4E Less miniature, simpler combats in 4E

Thanks, I'll look over 7th Sea and see what they came up with - I've heard good things about 7th Sea before so this is just one more reason.

    Totemic Spear & Totemic Warclub

Unfortunately I think the OA powers specifically says "When a creature leaves a space adjacent to your Spirit Companion without shifting" - so nothing new there.

    Totemic Spear & Totemic Warclub

Not quite the combo I was looking for there in that case. Either way, a Warclub will atleast give me a passable ability to make good Melee attacks if I for some reason would need that.

    Totemic Spear & Totemic Warclub

Ah, but the important thing here is that I am not attacking WITH the weapons. And you can wield two implements (there is a FAQ somewhere with that answer) and gain the properties of both, so with two one-handed weapons (say Javelin and Mace) I should be set to use this combo. The only "catch" I...

    Bear Shaman tips?

Unfortunately, we have no Rangers. Party make-up for those interested: Hobgoblin Stormheart Warden Bugbear Whirling Barbarian Goblin Swarm Druid Hobgoblin Swarm Druid Hobgoblin Bear Shaman (me)

    Totemic Spear & Totemic Warclub

So... I've been thinking. Totemic Warclub allows you to manifest "Melee Spirit 1" attacks from your own square as well as the spirits. Totemic Spear makes all "Melee Spirit 1" attacks reach an additional square. If my character has both (say one javelin and one mace), would I then effectively...

D&D 4E Less miniature, simpler combats in 4E

Overall Wrecan seems to be going in about the same direction, only that I will most probably be a little more "scripted" in how I define zones. For example, in a combat inside a mansion, each room would be a zone, the staircase would be one zone and the entracehall would be two zones.

D&D 4E Less miniature, simpler combats in 4E

While funny, I'd love to get some response to the idea/houserule itself rather than suggestions on what to do with my table :)

D&D 4E Less miniature, simpler combats in 4E

So, I've been contemplating changing how combat works for us. We've recently encountered a spacing problem (a table broke and now we don't have room to place large maps anymore) and I'm considering new options for how to handle 4E combats. Right now I am considering creating smaller "zones" and...

Warhammer 3e Demo Experiences -OR- How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bits

Using zones was how I first imagined it would work when it was described to me, but then I realized it was something entirely different - tokens representing intra-personal distance or something like that, right?

Warhammer 3e Demo Experiences -OR- How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bits

My biggest question is - how does the abstract ranging system work, can you give a few examples of "flow". Does the game handle stuff like flanking/combat or is that not even present in the game? One part of me desperately wants to try to use WHRP3's abstract system for 4E too...
