Tabletopocalypse Now - GMS' thoughts about the decline in the hobby

Actually I said D&D not a "real" game because its a published IP, and the publishing industry doesnt produce games it produces books about games. Chess is not a contained in a book, D&D is, and real games are played and not read. oh and please give me a good example of a thousand year old...

Tabletopocalypse Now - GMS' thoughts about the decline in the hobby

Sure dude, the board is the same, the peices are the same, the board is set up the same, a bishop still moves diagnaly, etc. but if you want to consider making a little change to how a couple of peices move a whole new game, thats up to you. edit.. btw this thread is not about chess, if you...

Well if you concider changing 1% of a games design qualifies as a completely different game. then yeah were talking about different games.

Tabletopocalypse Now - GMS' thoughts about the decline in the hobby

Ok, so games may not be designed to last forever, but chess has changed very little in over a thousand years, and in thirty-five years D&D publications have changed almost every year. Im not going to speculate on the designers reasons for conceiving a new game, but the inventor of chess...

No, I think its obvious that hasbro produces game products, and wants to make sure that they will need to be replaced for either poor replay, or low production quality. And though this policy is great for making the company money, its not so good for a hobby.

Tabletopocalypse Now - GMS' thoughts about the decline in the hobby

Please dont compare real games like chess, and checkers, to a published IP like Dungeons and Dragons. No offense, but.... I think its important to point out, the main differance between a game like chess and D&D publications, is that publishing companies dont design games to be played forever...

    Academic Studies Recent Edition Wars

It appears that the article is supporting a fan fiction rebellion (and the title is misleading), The author tries to link game systems to fiction writing, but unfortunately published fiction and game mechanics are not considered the same under copyright law (copyright laws dont cover games), and...

    Piracy

Your right, technology doesnt alter the labor of the artist. What technology has done, is eliminate the way you profit from that labor.

    Piracy

When file sharing decreases because of a rash of lawsuits, let me know.

    Piracy

Well, the technology for P2P file sharing has existed for at least a decade, in that time its been adopted by more people, and still remains completly unregulated.

    Piracy

Im not advocating a political position, Im just pointing out the reality that technology has made purchasing a "product" to enjoy art, unnesecary. As for doctors, lawyers, fireman, etc, working for free; if technology makes their jobs obsolete than they can probably expect the same eventual...

    Piracy

Well, I guess now you can see the benifit of creating art for love instead of money.

    Piracy

I think its the artistic talent inherent to that indavidual, which makes their art valuable, and that is not related to their level of desire, be it for love, or money.

    Piracy

Well, I suspect the alternative is to stop working becuase nobody is going to pay you for it. Im pretty sure the art-based industries will soon be obsolete. Though, Im hopeful that talented people who create, and share art for personal pleasure will continue to do so. Ofcourse with out the...

    Piracy

Actually it does matter, becuase in the past, all the profits made by an artist were based on charging for the conversion of the "artitic labor(writing, movies, music etc.)" into a product and then copying and distributing (basically selling) that product. But with technology, like the personal...

    Why THAC0 Rocks

Sorry if this is a little off topic S'mon You used the term "target number" in two differnt ways. First as the AC (or Defense #). Second as the number rolled on the dice. I believe the first one was correct. But personally I would prefer the term "target number" to refer to the...
