[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

The copyright laws on similar games goes like this "Once a game has been made public, nothing in the copyright law prevents others from developing another game based on similar principles." This would cover the scope of my ideas. Simply put I am not interested in using the OGL because it would...

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

I am certain that my collection of game ideas are not eligible for copyright. And I woud agree distribution of these ideas is a big concern

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

Well if WotC pursued any lawsuit aginst me for trying sharing my ideas on D&D it would not only be a big waste of their time and money it could also be seen as depriving the RPG community of a potentially major improvment to the game which the OGL was meant to encourage. I just dont see them...

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

What Im proposing is not theft if the material is free for the public to use w/ or without the OGL. Please go read the first post in this thread it will explain what im refering to

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

Well if I thought there were people on these messageboards mean enough to suggest they would do somthing like that (or suggest someone might) I never would have started a thread here. I probibly would have gone to Dragonsfoot, RPGnet, RPG site or even the WotC boards to avoid this kind of...

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

Currently the project is close enough to a complete game system (still not eligable for copyright) to start investigating its uses as just that a game system. If I was to actually write it out this could increases the risk of copyright infringment.

Why would someone steal my car? ;)

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

No I havnt started actually writing it into paragraphs or explaining it with detailed text (obviously thats not easy for me :) ) So it is currently just a collection of Charts, Systems Mechanics as I said this stuff is impossible to copyright at least in its current form of strictly game material.

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

As far as copyright on my words; well Im pretty sure my grammer is so bad nobody would want to steal them but my ideas (especially with game mechanics) are usually very good and it is a shame I cant copyright those. This thread is an attempt to explore how to get the ideas out to the community...

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

I read all RPG game books for their game mechainics and I have no trouble determining what is simple game systems and would be creative fluff which could be subject to copyright. I do enjoy the work of all RPG designers including those at WotC and I think all game rules atleast try to improve...

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

Scott I have no intentions of using (or violating) copyrights All I have is game mechanics and im not sure those would qualify as a product right now The copyright law I refer to is the one that shows games can not receive a copyright http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl108.html "The idea for a...

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

Ok you obviously dont understand what Im proposing. This is not a profitable product and it is not a peice of artistic literature I would even try to own or copyright (this makes it very different than what the RPG industry produces) it is simply game systems which do not "infringe" on any...

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

I really appreiciate everyones input and I find this whole thread extremly informative. Im not sure if you design rpg's jim but if you do then identifying the very clearline between a crunchy game system and peice of copyrightable creative fluff is pretty easy to figure out. (at least it is for...

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

Im not sure I have made myself clear so Im going to try agian I have pointed out that game systems are free for anyone to use Then I state I have a "Game" which would use only this legally free stuff Then I question If WotC would object? The responses I see people givng are that this is...

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

I guess you missed my first post but its not possible to "infringe" if the material used is impossible to copyright; what im proposing is releasing set of game designes that would use only material not subject to copyright (game systems are excluded from copyright according to US laws...

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

Obviously thats my opinion and I could easily avoid using referance to the trademark "Dungeons and Dragons" to avoid infringment. Did you have anything else?

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

This thread is not intended to promote my game designs but I can see how it is relivant to determine how it can avoid conflicting with copyrght infringment First its a short document (50-100 pages) and absolutly 100% crunchy game mechanics (systems and methods only ofcourse) The designs...

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

Scott the License appears to apply in regards to material intended for copyright. If I was to create a game using D&D mechanics that were within the definition of games under US copyright laws (with no intention to copyright) would this be taken as violating (or not agreeing to) the OGL and how...

[OGL Questions] Is Dungeons and Dragons a game?

If WotC is supporting the RPG community I think any important innovations in game design would be encouraged be them and definatly not discourage. In fact I would enjoy seeing them using my design improvments on D&D in future WotC product (like I told scott) as opposed to having them try and...
