    gimme back my narration

Hahaha. That is awesome. The last 4e game I played the GM was jumping up and down and emitting high-pitched chittering to illustrate the kobolds delight and tanglefooting a PC. And I said to him, "Hey, buddy, you stand up at the gaming table and you're LARPing." ;) And then I blasted him with a...

    gimme back my narration

You make a good point. Particularly with 1). While there is no question that players and GMs can flavor things to their own tastes I think that the presentation in 4e is a bit backward. Players are given a bit of text for every power they have describing the narrative effect. GMs are provided...

    gimme back my narration

You are an experienced D&D player. Over the course of 4e most players will not be as experienced. The fluff that they are presented with becomes the canon of the game. I think much of the schism between editions of any game causes this. D&D, first of games, exacerbates this even more. ;)

    gimme back my narration

I think all of you fellows are spot on in some way. Powers are a fine system but their presentation is far too dense to allow easy re-fluffing. That is a strength of the writing in 4e but also contributes to the opaqueness of the game. I can't help but make the MtG card comparison. Many of...

    Retraining Able Learner

I don't think you can even take Able Learner. It's a trait not a learned ability. Like Forgotten Realms regional feats it's more to do with an inborn talent or upbringing. That's just my GM-hammer talking though?

    sorcerers and bonus feats.

I think the original idea was that the sorcerer's impressive battery of spells per day was the balancing factor between sorcerer and wizard. The sorcerer receives in the area of 50% more spells per day per level than the wizard. That's noteworthy until you consider that the wizard is infinitely...

Forked Thread: The Best OGL Systems

Conan Hands down the best OGL game I've played. Not just the game but the supplemental material. The class splats are so good. I really can't say enough good things. True20 Though I have not yet had the opportunity to play I have read revised cover to cover and I am really impressed. I think...

npc classes? psionic and other 3rd party

This is a good list. These are mostly home-brew but it's a pretty good list. The Villain classes in particular are a great play-aid.

Forked Thread: Name exactly what 4E is "missing"

I've played enough 4e to isolate what I don't like. And what I don't like is a major part of being on the player's side of the screen. There's plenty of stuff I do like but it'll never get used because I'm not going to invest my time and money in mastering a system that doesn't work for me on...

Feats that Should Be Skill Tricks

I've been meaning to post this since my original post wandered off into incoherent rambling. I like skill tricks but have been reluctant to use them for two reasons. 1) Yet another sub-system I have to cram into my brain. I mostly GM and I'm uncomfortable with PCs using anything I'm not...

Forked Thread: Name exactly what 4E is "missing"

I think that The Gneech and El Mahdi have stated fairly succinctly the things that I feel are missing in 4e. It feels very constrained from a character creation and advancement standpoint. I'm a major character builder. I make characters and develop concepts for fun. I don't feel the same way...

PHB2 Wizard Variant ability: any good?

Crafty. I never know how to feel about these sorts of rules end runs. Yes, it is legal by the rules but why such a circuitous route to get to it. By the rationale of balance here shouldn't the variant abilities just be available as feats?

PHB2 Wizard Variant ability: any good?

This is true but I've got to stick up for the familiar in one respect. Familiars have all of the master's skill ranks. This means they can Aid Another on Knowledge checks or even make checks as well as the master since Knowledge is usually a one use deal. This seems very minor but I have used it...

    Haste + TWF

Since the attacker was using two 1-h weapons (-4 penalty) it probably would have been best to take +8/+8 with the primary weapon unless the defender had a very high or very low AC or the off hand weapon had a particularly appropriate special ability. But yes, your interpretation is correct...

Name one thing you love and one thing you hate about 4e D&D

That's not a rule, sir. That is flavor. A Raise Dead that you only paid 300 gp for. Roll on random table, apply result. LOVE An even more unified core mechanic. HATE Cookie cutter classes with way too much sugar. Bad-ass should not be a default, it should be an aspiration.

    D&D 3.x Best 3.5 rules?

While it was one of the greatest innovations of 3e it is also one of its deadliest loopholes. Combined with Favored Class, which was meant to curtail abuse, some of the most ridiculous rules-ravishing I have ever seen resulted from multi-classing. Don't get me wrong, I luvs me some good...

    D&D 3.x Best 3.5 rules?

I'll chime in with Divine and Reserve feats, too. I also like Tactical feats. Is there a book that contains all of the Tactical feats? I hate having to look through half a dozen books. I like most of 3.5. Character creation and development are high points for sure. Just with the core classes...

    Too many natural 20s

There are two coppery d20s in my buddy's collection that rarely roll over a 5. We give them to people that don't bring their own dice. I have a magic d20 that never fails if it has been coated in the blood of a virgin on a full moon. Praise, hail d20!!!

D&D 4E Is 4E doing it for you?

I ran some quickies for Group A and they didn't care for it much. I tried to be as objective as possible as the GM and I did get several elements out of that I think are good. It has good stuff from the GM perspective. I've played three sessions with Group B as a player and I really don't like...

    The Ultimate (A)D&D Kitbash

I really like what you've done here. I've been thinking in this direction lately. I started to redesign the cleric to be closer to 2e specialty priests. I've had seeds of other ideas that sound like the scheme you've laid out. I've been trying to make the three class system less bland and this...
