Pax Prime seminar 2012 juicy news!

They never could and never will. They need to figure out what the class' place in the world is, so they can design for it. Otherwise, as it has been said countless times in this thread already, a lightly armoured fighty guy with two swords and a bow can easily be a Fighter. You don't need a...

    How To Do Wildshape

On one hand, there's a pretty good argument in favour of Wildshape being the Druid's definitive mechanic (much like CS is the Fighter's or spell slots the Wizard's). But on the other hand I think Wildshape being a family of spells would solve a lot of problems with it. Of course there...

    [Playtest 2] Any Deaths?

Four deaths. Two PCs, a Wizard and Rogue vs five skeletons from the Bestiary (four with swords one with bow). Both died (or rather, were reduced below 0, dying and unconscious). Later the same pair fought six skeletons (all with swords) and they died again. Factors: -only two PCs against a...

Even Level Skill Training [play test 2]

From what I understand from panels and blogs and such there is currently no way to gain new skills, but they intend to implement one. I guess that's why the text is somewhat confusing.

Rolling for Ability Scores or Point Buy

I'm in the minority that would rather have rolling, if possible. My players would all rather have point buy.

[Playtest Report] The Grim Reaper strikes again

So I ran a quick playtest just now using the second packet. I think we started around a quarter before eight, finished at eleven. About an hour of that was spent on chatting, creating characters, reading through stuff, eating and so on. So let's say about two hours of play. Just two players...

    Warlock and Sorcerer

The Eldritch Blast is also ranged and force damage.

    Warlock and Sorcerer

Yeah, they need to tone that damage down. That's a lot of damage for a 1st level at-will. The mass charm twice per short rest is also pretty crazy.

    Warlock and Sorcerer

Oh dang it, the could have put up a notice or sent a mail. Downloading! EDIT: The dragon sorcerer is sick. 1d8 hp. You can cast spells in armour, get +1 to attack and it's not at all hard to also gain +2 to melee dmg as you level up. Plus you can use one willpower for an additional 2d6 melee...

    Warlock and Sorcerer

EDIT: deleted some needless confrontational stuff Ontopic...The sheet shown at the keynote say Intelligence is the prime ability for the Warlock (bound to disappoint some) and Charisma for Socerer (expected). Warlocks get +1 to Int or Dex or Con. 6+Con HP. Proficient with light armour, basic...

Is the Healer Specialty Too Powerful?

For me it falls somewhere on the line between "Gee, I'm sure glad we have a Healer in the party." and "Someone MUST be a Healer." But perhaps you're right. Bumping the die size up one step might be a better way to do it. If your HD is d8, you roll d10s instead when treated by a healer.

Oh My Goodness! That looks like D&D!

Skills: Pre 3e you have percentile (Thief) skills, NWP slots or no skills at all. After 3e you have only trained/untrained. In 5e you have skills with granular proficiency, just like in 3e, except the math is flatter. (Base) Attack bonuses: None in 4E, now they're back. Yes they're flatter but...

Cackling Manaically at the 13 Aug Legends and Lore

To be honest, in actual Vance stories, memorisation takes but a moment. Like, open a book, read a spell, it's in your head. Wizards memorize spells when they go out (adventuring or whatever) because lugging your whole library of tomes around is hard and burdensome. They only memorize things...

Rogues automatically suceed at Hard Tasks

The DC guidelines say examples of DC16 actions are "Pick a typical lock" and "Cross a wildly swaying rope bridge". I do not see those things as being beyond the ability of a typical rogue. Yes it's powerful but not too powerful for my tastes.

Finally, the Fighter can both Stunt and Hit

I was slightly confused by it, too, but it actually makes sense in relation to how cover works. If it was the other way around, it would mean Archers would be actually better at shooting at people in cover compared to shooting at people out in the open which really doesn't make sense. As it...

Oh My Goodness! That looks like D&D!

I find this odd as the 2nd playtest packet so far probably resembles 2E and 3E the most out of all the editions.

    D&D 5E (2014) [D&D Next] Second Packet - initial impressions

I have three issues with this packet. 1.) This one is really just personal preference but I'd prefer the core would be lighter and sparser, like in the first packet. I like a lot of stuff they have added here but I'd rather see it in a "Layer #2 " module. But I can live with it. 2.) This one...

    So, Attacks of Oppportunity?

This is the simplest possible rule I can come up with that would make melee "stickier" and not fiddle with the rules as they are right now, and doesn't slow things down by adding additional actions or reactions or whatever: Disengaging from melee (moving out of an area threatened by an enemy's...

    So, Attacks of Oppportunity?

Regarding ranged attacks, spells (and potentially potions etc) in melee I woul simply say the attacker gets Advantage. It's simple and easy to remember and makes sense - if you aren't fighting you can't parry or keep the other person at bay, so it's muc easier to hit you. They don't magically...

    The Dodge Action is Amazing

With Fighter's Surge you can Dodge to step up to a dangerous foe and attack for example. It's also a great action when you're retreating. Just dodge and move until you get behind a corner or behind some cover then double hustle. I think it has a lot of potential uses, even more so if classes...
