D&D 5E (2014) Ed Greenwood to write 5E's Forgotten Realms

I thought this was pretty clear from the start. Around the time they announced 5e they also announced "Ed Greenwood Presents Elminster's Forgotten Realms" and at one of the first pannels (DnDXP was it?) Mearls said: "The Realms will be supported from the start [by the new edition]."

Separating Attack and Utility Spell Slots

I was absolutely in favour of separating those resources from the start. But I find that the new scroll mechanic and the spell-as-ritual alternative is an adequate solution, so I voted no. Since you can put any spell on a scroll and cast it from there or cast utility spells as rituals without...

D&D 5E (2014) When will we be able to run a campaign with D&D Next?

If you keep character advancement really slow, then the three levels that are available could serve you for about three months. If you campaign starts in, say, July, then it's a fairly safe bet that by October we'll have chargen and stuff...but who knows with how many levels.

Have you been using lighting conditions in the playtest?

Example: The Light spells illuminates 20 ft. with bright light. A torch illuminates 20 ft. with bright light and an additional 20 ft. with dim light. A goblin has darkvision of 60 ft. and goblins get +1d6 on advantaged attacks. In some parts of the dungeon the goblins could then easily hide in...

    Mana??

Based on certain comments Mearls has made recently, I'm 99% sure we will also see the Sorcerer and Warlock, and each of those will have their own mode of spellcasting (one of which might be spell points). One of those might even be a full AED caster.

Just What are the Cleric Domains?

Where did we hear that the Pelor cleric has two? I'm fairly certain they have one domain each.

The playtest reports really demonstrate ...

You can run the caves as a "save the heir" quest any day of the week. The purpose is that you have a location that's fully developed, with enemies with their own motivations. You tell the players that monsters have been raiding a nearly village, a duke's heir was kidnapped on the road not far...

Not a Playtest Report: well, it's definitely D&D.

Everyone gets Advantage if they attack while hidden. The lurker theme allows you to start your turn hidden, move into the open to attack and keep the Advantage, even if you've revealed yourself.

    Wizards: Already Too Strong?

Well, the Ogre could do that even in 4E, in most instances. He just got penalized for it. I see a number of options that the PCs have here: -the Wizard can Ray of Frost the brute, immobilizing him -the fighter can position himself between the enemy and the Wizard and ready an...

The 88 Hit Point Ogre in the Room

Jeremy and Mike said - both in the online chat and in the podcast - that damage and HP are inflated for the playtest. It's intentional and the final form probably won't have numbers that high.

    Which stat for init?

I like the idea of Charisma determining Initiative. Wisdom already determines surprise/striking first through Perception. Charisma on the other hand can be seen as strength of personality, confidence, decisiveness, leadership. As someone mentioned above, what Initiative really does in the game...

I don't know if this is a thing...

I am perplexed by the sentiment that "what goes on in the game world" "doesn't matter to resolution". I'm not saying it's wrong, it just feels alien to me. For example, consider my imaginary example of the Light spell, above. It consists entirely of a description of what goes on in the game...

I don't know if this is a thing...

Yep, it's definitely a thing. I hold the (intentionally) provocative opinion that Pathfinder and 4E (the fans of which seem to be most at odds with each other) are really the same game, it's just the presentation that is different. It's a case where identity politics based on gut reactions...

    April 3rd, Rule of 3

Here's the thing about HP: for me the suspension of disbelief in relation to HP gets punched in the face the moment the party's fighter can take more physical trauma than an elephant after gaining a few levels. There is no way hit points can be justified as simply "harm" or "wounds" beyond...

D&D 5E (2014) 5e: Stat the Lady of Pain...so we can overthrow her

I'll tell you why there shouldn't be (official) stats for the Lady of Pain. Because then there is an official version. And it becomes harder to decide whether in your game the Lady is just a bunch of rats hiding under some robes, a puppet of the Dabus, a truly unkillable meta-power, or just a...

How many hits should a 1st level Fighter be able to take?

IMHO I'd say pretty much all the classes should be able to take one hit "for free". I wouldn't mind a game where one hit can take you down either, but for all intents and purposes "one hit for free" should work well for a standard level 1 D&D game. After that first hit... if you're a...

Conceptual Problem - Fighter vs. Ranger

Hm, no, I wouldn't say so. When I say "mercenary" I mean someone who puts his life on the line in exchange for some payment or reward. It's what I mean when I say the fighter "lives to fight, or fights for a living". They joust, fight with swords, maces, spears, shields... That's how medieval...

Conceptual Problem - Fighter vs. Ranger

My thoughts: -a Fighter lives to fight (or fights for a living), the Ranger (and other classes) fight to live -a Fighter should be competent with a broad range of weapons and combat situations, the ranger knows how to fight well, but that's it -a Fighter is tied to civilization, he knows...

Uniting the Editions, Part 2 Up!

Ok, so this is some wild speculation on my part, but this is what I'm expecting based on the seminars, columns and rumors. We already know the checks default to Abilities, right? So three 5E characters, a Basic, Core and Advanced walk up to a narrow ledge across a gaping chasm. They want to...

    The Paladin and the Stirges

To me the whole thing just shows that people are always ready to apriori hate an edition just because it's new or potentially varies from their super special unique way of playing. Of course this applies to most things in life, not just D&D editions.
