Do You Use the Core Pantheon?

I have run two Greyhawk campaigns over the last 4 years, and the core pantheon figures prominently. I've used worshipers or clerics of all the major core deities (save for perhaps Yondalla), and I tend to use St. Cuthbert (The current PC's spend time in Verbobonc), Vecna, Grummsh(sp) and...

Paladins, Lawful Goodness, and higher standards

Strictly speaking, Paladins are held to a higher standard...the class description says they do not willingly associate with evil characters, this isn't necessarily true of a LG fighter. That being said, I would be careful about enforcing that kind of thinking to much, you shouldn't punish a...

Planning adventures is Craft and Winging-it is ART?

I have known DMs who were very good at winging a game (not so good I couldn't tell...), but I am firmly of the opinion that if you can run a good game winging it, you could run a great game with some planning. And any planning is better than none. I tend to use the 'fog' analogy: I can see...

Planning adventures is Craft and Winging-it is ART?

Exactly. You plan the adventure, and wing that which you did not plan for.

    Best Excuse for Gaming Evar?

I had a cousin who told his mother he couldn't go to a family picnic because he had to go worship Satan... This was, of course, in the early/mid 80s, so it got quite a reaction.

What's the most over-used magic item?

IME, the most used item is either Amulet of Natural Armor or Ring/Cloak of Protection...now whether or not you consider them overused is something else entirely.

Moments you live for in D&D gaming

Ditto to just about everything so far... *The joy that players get from being deeply involved in a plot from their back-story (What do you mean my ancestors were the ones who cast The Invoked Devastation??!!!) *A good, challenging, nail-biting fight. Especially if the PCs win through an act of...

    LOTR campaign -- "Frodo Fails"?

The victory of the Last Alliance took years and cost the greatest men and elves of that time (and of history) their lives. It was not an easy victory. It's stated in the Appenddices that Sauron was still rebuilding his armies (after being 'captive' in Numenor and his body dying there), while...

    LOTR campaign -- "Frodo Fails"?

Interesting idea... I may be something of a purest, but I'd go with the supposition that if Frodo fails, Sauron ends up with the Ring, one way or another. Gandalf says something to the effect of "if he regains the ring, his victory will be so complete that none can foresee his end while this...

Doing my part for the hobby

One of the players in my current group hadn't played D&D or any RPG for years before picking it back up a few months ago with us. Just recently he started DMing for a group of his friends, and I had a little chat with him before-hand...I felt very much the same way you do. [sniff] The birth of...

Some questions about social situations in a game.

I use them both...I require the PCs to play out such situations (not just roll dice) and will give a PC a circumstance bonus to his roll if he role-plays the situation well. I never allow the dice to override good role-playing; at least not as far as these types of situations go.

What do you do when you're too powerful?

One thing that people (especially DMs) seem to forget, IME, is that when talking about wether a single character is overpowered, you are discussing that character out of context... In 3.X the game world can be just as 'overpowered' as the characters, thanks to the fact that anything available...
