The Open Gaming License: Almost 10 Years Later

Technically, it allows one to copy the rules portion of the PHB only. It does not allow use of proper names, trade dress, artwork, etc. On topic. How can anyone dislike or excoriate a license that allowed so much support for D&D? It's a great system, made more diverse. Sure beats the wars over...

WotC Layoffs - Rob Heinsoo, Logan Bonner, and Chris Sims

No. It is however still a sad event for those losing jobs and an example of the poor quality of management at Hasbro that they consider people this replaceable. How many executives that don't add value to the games themselves were laid off?

Supplement development, copy editing and ordering creative.

Many publishers use stock art (usually similarly-themed from a prior project) to "placehold" in their catalogue until the real art is in. I think that's okay as a practice unless it introduces confusion with prior products or if one gets attracted to a piece of art only to see it switch...

    Making good monsters

There are three keys to memorable monsters (plus there's lots of good advice in this thread) 1. Seek inspiration from the world around you and your own imagination. Example: I once saw a picture of a bodily organ in liquid. Later I saw a fish tank. From this I conceived of a monster that was a...

    Game Wikis?

Who uses 'em? Which ones work and why, please? Do you host your own, or get them from somewhere else? Primarily interested in free, or low monthly cost services. Not looking to start one right away, but gathering data. Thanks in advance for all the info!

    What Would You Do?

Under these circumstances, I'd consider revisiting the campaign structure. That might signal that the group is more about beer 'n pretzels, kill-them-and-take-their-stuff play than anything centering on any kind of significant and ongoing plot.

    When does detail become tedium?

New art has some value to it. I can see getting it if you are playing 4E and don't want to do conversions on the fly. Otherwise, does it have something wanted or needed? If not, don't get it! :)

Placement of Terrain and Hazards for Combat

First off, terrain of any variety spices up the fight a lot more than a static battlemta, or a dungeon that's always level and flat with just some walls. 1) A mix that changes from fight to fight based upon the environment. Mud is a fun, lowlevel hazard. A pile of bodies also hamper movement...

Why do DM's like Dark, gritty worlds and players the opposite?

Think of it this way. A DM who spends a lot of time creating NPCs to challenge the PCs invests more effort per session by an order of magnitude than the PCs. Once the prep time is done, you might feel a little surprised, non-plussed or even disappointed that all that effort dies to three...

Wolfgang Baur's Open Design new games!

2% away from commissioning The Courts of the Shadow Fey. Come on folks! That's about one patron. Someone put us over the top.

Albany Gameday XII - October 3rd

I would like to try! You're only 2 hours away. (Incidentally, I think we met at a gameday at either MaverickWeirdo's or Piratecat's. I think it was the former when he lived in Worcester.)

Albany Gameday XII - October 3rd

I'm sorry Guedo79. I have something else that's come up (family related). So I'd like to decline to provide a game and I won't take the spot in the afternoon game. I'll try to get out for another time. Thanks!

Albany Gameday XII - October 3rd

D'oh! Six of course. (Unless the venue has smaller tables or requires more players, in which case I will adapt!)

Albany Gameday XII - October 3rd

That would be cool! I'd like to try Savage Worlds in the afternoon please (and need to go look for my copy of the rules now) since I've always wanted to play that system. I will then run Lands of the Jade Oath (D&D 3.5/Arcana Evolved variant). Adventure entitled the 10,000 Demons of Demon...

Albany Gameday XII - October 3rd

I'm interested in attending. My wife didn't flinch at the notion either! :D I'm a couple hours away, so what would be the start time please? (I ask because I could quite easily be arm-twisted *cough cough* volunteer gleefully to run a game, like Jade Oath or a couple other possibilities...

Never been to a convention...(should I go to Gen Con?)

I had one whiff of Gamer Funk this year. Lasted about 5 seconds. Nothing to lose sleep over. The people on the commuter bus I take can be worse! This year, Gen Con had, according to their site, 27,800 unique gate admissions.

Wolfgang Baur's Open Design new games!

And From Sea to Shore is fully funded! Turn your votes and dollars to the other two, unless you're a huge Golarion fan. (Okay, ideally buy into all three, but that doesn't happen for too many.)

Never been to a convention...(should I go to Gen Con?)

To each their own. That said, I have found very few truly obnoxious, hygiene & socially challenged gamers. They are great people in general, courteous, friendly and fun to be around. Now, to the OP's question, if you go with friends, it drastically cuts the cost. I stay at a B&B that's 20...
