calling all GMs - advice on handling a selfish player

You have to convince him that game theory allows for a failure despite the most involved and complicated explanations of 'real life' the player comes up with. Make sure he hears that before you play and agrees that it can enhance the game experience. If he does not then do not run that time...

So I've never been to GenCon, but Smelly Gamers???

I was once a shift supervisor in a communications center for DLA and it was an enclosed space; airconditioning but not great airflow. I once had a guy that had told me early on '...if you have a problem with me, just tell me.." so I did. That day he was training another fellow so they had to...

    Why would PCs wear capes?

In the Watchmen comic a character named Dollar Bill wore a cape and it got stuck in a bank's revolving door and the bank robbers killed him easily. I think it was French police who wore capes with weights in the bottom edge to allow them to swirl it around and wrap a limb of a felon or cover...

    Your First magical Item

That's funny, you deeming that scimitar "lowly" my first magic item in a D&D game was a mace +2 that was an awesome thing! My dwarf went on to kill a dragon with the thing! Granted, it was a baby dragon and he was invised and able to fly thanks to others in the group but it was an excellent...

Game fantasy first or book/movie fantasy first?

I was 22 years old when I got the three tan booklet set in 77. I had been a fan of various fantasy works up until that time although the list of recommended reading in the back of the 1e DMG was great. Most of what I had read were mysteries, Tarzan and that kind of thing. I also watched lots...

    Favorite covers.

I think Joan Jett covered "Wild Thing", that was cool. From the "Lilo and Stich" soundtrack - Wynonna Judd covered "Burning Love", A-Teens covered "Can't Help Falling In Love With You" Annette Funicello covered "Blame it on the Bossa Nove", "Wah Watusi" and "Ma, He's Makin' Eyes At Me!" :)

    Birthright

The motivations of the elves in BR were excellent, they were seriously different and reasonable for a race that was not human. Even the variant human nationalities had reasons to be the way they were and that helped make it fun. Rhove was one othe most complex entities in the BR game. Humans...

    Notes from D&D seminar

    PC on PC action!

In our gaming group the party rescued this elf guy. The female elf dragon disciple in the group was pleased to have someone to talk to since the leadership of the party swung between the half-orc barbaric fighter and the dwarven wizard. Reasoned debate was non-existant. this elf initiated a...

    Sir or Madam

I live in NC, USA and have worked behind a counter in a deli where the customers would address me as 'sir'. Here, there is nothing pointless about being pleasant or polite; it's the way most of the people just do things. Note, 'most' does not mean 'all' mate. ;)

Clowns everone hates them so why do they exist?

As a dad I appreciate the advice because that is what I told my daughter to do. While being a clown I made a point to not get that part of me within punching distance of a kid. the worst I ever encountered was a parent who told their kid to "stomp on the clown's foot". I smiled and...

Clowns everone hates them so why do they exist?

You're welcome! I've had that happen with helium-filled balloons, btw. Came home from a party with a balloon, left it loose in the living room and in the morning it had floated down the hall and into our bedroom. It was freaky waking up with 'something moving' above the bed when your vision...
