    D&D 5E (2014) Philosophy: Devil's Sight

Might be worthwhile to interpret DS and DV as they do the lenses in the Predator franchise. You recognize dark from light because you flip rapidly between the two states of vision when you want to.

    D&D 5E (2014) Philosophy: Devil's Sight

I'll have to think about that. I always considered invocations that didn't take some sort of action to activate to be always on. The followup would be, do you consider "can" abilities on or off by default? Probably up to the character. And does it take an action to turn on or off? I'd guess...

    D&D 5E (2014) Philosophy: Devil's Sight

@Leatherhead Love your tagline. Nowhere in the rules does it say you can turn those abilities off. They're not spells. They're just natural. You can close your eyes, but then you're effectively blind. But a nictating membrane is a cool concept.

    D&D 5E (2014) Philosophy: Devil's Sight

Put on your GM hat: When you narrate the effects of Devil's Sight (DS) and darkvision (DV) ... Does the character actually recognize the difference between dark and light? Foundational information (please correct if wrong): For typical (racial) DV, areas of dim light appear as if it was...

Cleric shenanigans (metaphysical, no right answers)

Yeah, I'm trying to stay away from all the political stuff and focus on the impact of high-level PCs moving into a low-level area. More of an abstraction/parallel. Why bother moving into a low-level area except to retire? I don't want to boss over a bunch of locals who have little or nothing...

Cleric shenanigans (metaphysical, no right answers)

I confess I'm struggling to follow the detail of some of the conversations (which have drifted a bit from the original topic), but this particular logic path doesn't seem to jibe with my sensibility, or some real-world evidence. The concept of gentrification simultaneously seems to support and...

Cleric shenanigans (metaphysical, no right answers)

It's likely you'd have to prime the players to be prepared for these eventualities. But I've found that they have EXACTLY the mentality for the sort of responses these spells demand: For Augury, that infuriating, "Oh, yeah, definitely bad/good!" or "Shrug" with no follow up detail. Or for...

Cleric shenanigans (metaphysical, no right answers)

Through all the deep conversation on broader topics, I'm still taken by the ambiguity of Augury and Divination. I'm actually considering the implications of having Augury and Divination target PCs. From any other plane, an Augury might target PCs as "otherworldly entities." From anywhere...

Please describe your experience (players) or management (GMs) of a perfectly executed metaplot...

I don't want to spill any details of my campaign, but suffice to say that I've been running for the better part of four years (IRL) now. In year one, I introduced several themes, concepts and NPCs. There was a hidden overarching theme which many characters began to suspect in year two, and...

D&D 5E (2014) What do you think of this Kickstarter page?

I'm laughing my class off over here. Sorry. Just didn't notice what dropping the "CL" would do until now for the original book and this one. Anyway, the classes look pretty cool.

Cleric shenanigans (metaphysical, no right answers)

I have played in several games that follow similar lines of thought, but I'm not certain the 5E rules explicitly dictate this worldview. Just so I don't nitpick at everything, I'll focus on a couple of items: For item #1, 5E tends to discourage documented mechanisms for losing abilities. I...

Cleric shenanigans (metaphysical, no right answers)

I don't have time to fully respond to this right now. But the difference between faith and piety is fascinating. My gut feeling is that for DnD, the divine relationship ("devotion to your deity") matters (since most game worlds use real gods). So in modern connotation, faith, with its...

Cleric shenanigans (metaphysical, no right answers)

Background info ... please feel free to cite any other factors that may be relevant to the discussion. Cleric, page 58: "You prepare the list of cleric spells..." "Preparing a new list of cleric spells requires time spent in prayer and meditation..." "The power of your spells comes from...

    D&D 5E (2014) Realigning a magic item

You forgot about the part where she first kidnapped it (what evil sword wants to be wielded by a wussy paladin?) before lobotomizing it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Realigning a magic item

I find this an interesting perspective to explore. Does this mean there is no opportunity for true redemption or corruption? You can only change a sentient thing's behavior, but not its nature? Obviously, when you're discussing the idea of "souls" this may extend beyond magic items to...

    D&D 5E (2014) You find a magical _____, it does _____

Sorry for the length. Sane DMs may want to split this into two separate items, or reserve the HAWKER function for NPCs. Charlatan's Counter (wondrous, legendary, attunement required) To the inexpert eye, this is a simple wooden 3 foot square folding table which, in fact, is exquisitely...

Feast of the Shore (Very Rare, no attunment required) This bib is fashioned from ultra-fine threads of sun-bleached seaweed. It detects as powerful transmutation magic but reveals nothing else of its nature. When soiled or wet, it takes a full long rest to dry out. At the end of that time, it...

    D&D 5E (2014) You find a magical _____, it does _____

Vartex's Horn (legendary, requires attunement) This ornate helm is fashioned from the scales of a red dragon. A DC 20 check will reveal the materials to have belonged to an ancient red, which is still alive. And angry. His name is Vartex. While wearing the helm, you have +1 AC and the...
