    How do you handle evil?

    As long as they have the same major goals and will work with the party, I don't see an issue. If anything, it's good to have a character who's willing to do the more shady stuff, sometimes stealing an item, or assassinating a rival, or making a lil' deal with the devil makes things easier.

    That's fair, but I'm talking mainly on the assumption of the 6-8 stuff people keep saying all the time, if it's short they can just nova all the time and not make a difference, which is where the Fighter gets overshadowed pretty easily, and they can spend the spare lower level ones on utility...

    Also worth adding that "frontline" is a bit misleading due to how easy it is to just get past the martials at the front if you're willing to take the attack of opportunity, unless they have something like Sentinel.     Wizards also greatly benefit from feats, magic items and stat increases. AC and HP are also pretty important for them, optimizing a wizard is pretty much just picking the right spells and multiclassing to get armor (or get a race that grants armor prof).

    They can probably get by with average stats. The issue is casters coming to bully them, martials can't really handle that without some other casters willing to work for them.

    For the whole spell thing, I think it's fair to look at Wildshape. It's ridiculously versatile, letting you use it to fight, adapt to different terrains, fly, increase your travel speed, easily infiltrate places, blend with groups of animals, etc, and each subclass can gain ways to spend it...

    I find that this type of dicussion usually defaults to Fighter vs Wizard, but something like Barbarian vs Druid is about as bad in terms of out of combat stuff, and without the extra feats to try and compensate.

    For a level 20 Fighter, if they're really optimized, then I'd say 16 Wizard at most. Once Wizard has True Polymorph and Wish at level 17, you just can't reasonably compete.

    A few minutes of jogging will kill an average character of exhaustion if you use the chase rules, so there's definitely some stuff just for game mechanics that makes no sense at all.
