    Edition Wars: Burying the Hatchet...

IMHO 4E was a great game, it just wasn't "D&D." I don't like "healing surges" as part of D&D. I like the 1E feel of resource management and danger.

    Improved Familiar

The rules are fine and they told me to tell you "thanks for asking." Here is the SRD. Seems like there is a lot of DM discretion.

How much damage would these futuristic weapons deal if converted to D and D?

Too bad none of the dinosaurs had Evasion.

    Tripping flying creatures?

My best translation: OK, so tripping a flying creature causes a stall. How does that impact the feat "flyby attack"? Would the creature be able to continue its move on the ground, for instance? Since a stalled creature cannot take actions, do they lose their attack? If it successfully recovers...

    The Arathian Mendicant Class

If you're going to the trouble of a newly-fluffed monk variant, you might as well up the power a notch. At a minmum, give them full BAB and amp up the class abilities for levels 13+ (no one would stay for these crappy abilities - compare them to 9th level spells for instance, or even ToB...

Another shot at nerfing casters for balance

The good (great!): takes initiative out of the picture, nothing hard to remember, gives a reasonable chance of disruption. Solves all of Marley's issues. The bad: caster initiatve boosts are WAY nerfed. The ugly: Is monster A blind when it tries to hit? In other words, what happens to the...

Another shot at nerfing casters for balance

Yes, I believe this is the weakest link in the chain. The -5 was really a placeholder to gauge people's reactions. The question is how to let people have a chance to interrupt the spell without being heavy-handed and saying "casters can't improve their init like everyone else." I am open to...

Another shot at nerfing casters for balance

I think the bold is an unfair characterization as "the other changes" are the meat of the suggestion and not a laundry list - to whit, the effective re-introduction of casting times, a tried and true form of nerfing casters. The flat-footed and size category things do, admittedly, kind of fall...

Another shot at nerfing casters for balance

But... that's exactly what my suggestion is. Even in 1E, most spells' casting times were measured in segments (partial rounds), the difference being that someone could attack you before your spell segment occurred - as opposed to 3E where all your actions occur on your turn. My suggestion is...

Another shot at nerfing casters for balance

EDIT: Adding an intro. The main thrust of these changes is to re-introduce casting times (a la 1E), which effectively reduced the power of casters. I tried to do it in a way that changes 3E mechanics as little as possible and does not require re-thinking every spell and determining a casting...

    Ill thought out campaign ending

Make it effect him only in melee (i.e. within say 10'). Then, use ways for him to either move away from the character with the starmetal, or move the character. This way, he may become weaker or stronger during the battle as the starmetal character tries to stay with him. Have the effects...

    Setting Building

Read "The Guardian of the Flames" series by Joel Rosenberg. I think the third book is where gunpowder is introduced into a D&D like setting with quite an impact. This is how I view what would happen. However, there are D20 rules for gunpowder which are at least somewhat playable.

    What does "Fey Blood" mean?

Per page 40 of Frostburn ('ere's yer RAW, right 'ere): Fey Blood: Uldras are fey, and as such they are not subject to spells that specifically target humanoids, such as charm person or hold person. Likewise, effects that affect fey affect uldras as well. They possess no particular weakness...

    Fair trade for a Druid?

I come back to Swordsage maneuver/stance progression: - can be used in (many) wild forms - more versatile than just damage or AC bonus, although it can provide that - wisdom based - scales with level

    Exotic Mount and crazy ideas....

The RAW on creating a Living Spell excludes spells whose "effect is a creture." I would interpret this as including animating a dead creature as well, so I don't think you'd end up with a factory. Teleport only targets willing subjects, so I think that would be ok. I am sure there are a lot...
