D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Rise of Tiamat" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

I vote for option 3 Where did they take their long rest? in my game the PCs also cleared out everything aside from the Ettins (who they made friends with ) and the Dragon. Whilst they rested in the entrance of the cave, I felt that now that the influence of the cult was gone that the lair...

indeed I am glad he is now looking through CoS

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Hoard of the Dragon Queen" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

I felt that I needed to do a bit more to keep it going. When they say the PCs can't go into the tent or the caves in chapter 2 that just felt poor and needed some attention. For the most part HOTDQ was straight forward unlike its sister book which I have had to do a lot more for

    HotDQ advice? (spoiler)

After using the hook from Hack and Slash blog about the halfling in the cave being Tom Haverford ( none of my players watched Parks and Rec ), I had Leosin and Frume in Elturiel mention that a contact would meet them at the docks in BG. I then had the contact be Jon-Ralphio ( another P&R...

    HotDQ advice? (spoiler)

I added a few extra encounters for the stay in BG. Some were lifted from the module Murder in Baldurs Gate, were to add a bit of flavour. I also made a little heist adventure for the PCs as I felt more needed to be going on.

    HotDQ advice? (spoiler)

That is a great suggestion for the encounter. Did the PCs go through her room in the cave? if so they could have learnt the location of a safe house location that Mondath could be heading for in the case of a problem. That way your PCs could face her down there with or without...

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Hoard of the Dragon Queen" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

Whilst it may sound like that. I personally feel that if I am paying £45/$60 for a published module that some of the heavy lifting has been done for me and I only need to tweak for my own group etc. and this campaign requires in my opinion a lot of tlc to make it palatable which for new DMs...

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Rise of Tiamat" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

I totally missed that part, you could always have Harshnag dormant and only woken by Blagathus? The way I got round the PCs being nice to Blagothkus, was to make the 2 Stone giants really friendly and inquisitive around the PC races ( I have an inquisitive Gnome ) and to mention that something...

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Rise of Tiamat" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

Like Jayoungr has mentioned, I would also have the timer start once the whole party is in. When we get there that is what I was going to do

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Hoard of the Dragon Queen" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

Have you checked out the Hack and Slash blog? As he has some good thoughts on the cave etc if the PCs want to go in directly... Check out the notes for chapter 2 and 3 as he increases the difficulty depending on when you enter the caves/tent...

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Rise of Tiamat" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

I agree with Jayounger that whatever format you could manage would be great I am probably too far down my Realms trip to Thay to change much for my table but would love to hear about it

D&D 5E (2014) Enhancing "Hoard of the Dragon Queen" (Practical stuff to try at your table!)

For us, I had the PCs find a trail of dead creatures, heightening the suspense of the Black dragon, I then had a small encounter where the dragon appeared in Human form ( I know this is against RAW, but felt that over time they would have had access to some magical mcguffin ). He asked that as...

D&D 5E (2014) 1st session of HotDQ put a little fear in my players

Due to the PCs being battered at this point. I ran the Cyanwrath encounter slightly differently, with him fighting other villagers I one of the squares. The PCs watched from afar, bleeding and looking forward to a long rest

D&D 5E (2014) 1st session of HotDQ put a little fear in my players

I factored in a short rest for the PCs as otherwise I felt they wouldn't get involved with helping the townsfolk
