How Do You Present The Eberron Campaign Setting?

Well, the transition from 3.5 to 4e did clean some things up for Eberron, but some of the new 4e stuff still felt a little shoehorned. Following 5e's modularity, things like the arrival of Eladrin Cities or the shoehorning of Dragonborn & Devas into the setting may be optional. Then again, if...

    Monster Manual: What details?

I'm more interested in good descriptions of monster ecology - their place in the (generic) world, common habits, etc - than detailed physical description. Besides, making sure your descriptions match the art is an editorial thing; easier to fix the text than change art that has already been...

    Change and the OGL

Like I said, I'm not out to poke the bear - doing so can get a person the horns (and yes, I am mixing metaphores). It'll usually take a bit more than a few common terms to incite the wrath of a lawyer, though. Them boys and girls are expensive.

    Change and the OGL

True, "Bigby" has more to do with brand identity than copyright, and that's covered under OGL's brand identity clauses. Gameplay terms (such as Marking) are not brand identity. Besides, since 4e wasn't released under OGL, the OGL doesn't apply. Copyright, Trademark, and Patents are very, very...

    Change and the OGL

Technical language is not copyrightable, although arguing it in court may be difficult. Trademarks are very, very specific, too - and you can look up what is registered. For instance, I can use the word "Bigby" all I want in relation to an RPG product, because it isn't registered as a trademark...

    Change and the OGL

Considering that Big Daddy Hasbro still lets an internet forum/fan news site call itself the Allspark with an owner that claims to own a term covered easily underneith copyright and trademark law, I wouldn't be too worried. File off the serial numbers and don't copy/paste the text, and you're...

Fighters and other classes in a heavy gun campaign

If you are concerned about heavy armor still having value, a quick little houserule is that the armor has been adapted to the times - Masterwork armor is "bulletproof" and therefore firearms have to beat normal AC, even in the first range increment.

    World Building details

Perhaps there is a difference between False Summer and True Summer?False Summer is wet, rainy, and never gets above about 55 degrees F. True Summer is warmer, drier, sunnier, and a proper contenental summer. Maybe False Summer is shorter, followed by a longer second winter (Deep Winter?) before...

    Morrus on... Races

Personally? I'm more of a "Race as an Ethnic Group" kind of person, where the differences are importaint, but not necessarally in a mechanical way. The problem is getting some players to read the handout :P

Doing away with "Bigger Fish" problem.

I dunno..I have no problem reskinning stats to the appropriate fluff for players. 3e/Pathfinder makes it easy-yet-time-consuming by adding level. 4e makes it easy by "oh, hey, that stat block looks nice. That balrog is now an abyssal orc, bred from orcs doing [CENSORED] to [CENSORED] in in the...

How do you like your elves?

Ah, yes, forgot about Dragon Age and their Ghetto/Gypsy Elves with their lost culture. That would be next on my list, if the DA: Awakening expansion for the first game hadn't royally ticked me off, turning me off of the whole series.

    D&D 5E (2014) OGC for 5E?

Well, retreading what "could have, should have, would have" has been over done. Personally? I like some of the stuff from Iron Kingdoms, particularly Liber Mechanika's alternative breakdown of building magical items. And Steamjack building. A module for conprehensive magical item and golem...

    What's in an elf?

Or really, any other race in D&D - what is the essense of that race? 4e split Urban, magical elves from woodsy elves. 3e mixed both with mixed results, then patchworked with "there's an elf for that." The race started as a class back in the old days as a mix of wizard/fighter. Dragonlance kept...

How do you like your elves?

Over-easy, or sunny side up? There's the Tolkien Elves, which represent a cross between fallen angels and perfection ultimatly marred by hubris, built more or less along a Celtic/Nordic (icelandic nordic, I believe) background. Pretty much the current trope of High Fantasy. D&D..well, you...

    D&D 5E (2014) Joseph Goodman on 5E

If it works, great. Many game stores provided added value through game nights, carrying a larger array of products than just RPGs (board games, comics, CCGs, wargaming, snacks, etc), host LAN parties and console tournaments, and more. If a gaming store isn't doing any of those things, or isn't...

D&D 5E (2014) new Critical Hits article about running DnD next

Besides, if a player insists on doing dumb things (not ignorent things, but outright stupid things), bad things happen to a character. Like taking on NPCs that, as DM, I have just described as "Sizing them up, it doesn't look like your character can take them." It's happened. And the PC woke up...

    Uniting the [Publisher] Fanbase?

Paizo developed Pathfinder RPG to support their bread and butter: the adventure lines. If the licensing for NEXT is decent and enough of the fanbase shifts back to D&D 5e, Paizo will provide what the fanbase wants. After all, that's what makes them the money. Personally? I don't mind having...

Cleric - Holy Warrior or Healer?

Never really used the class that much except as NPC healbots. Still, though, looking at class roles... Paladin: Holy knight, champion of the faith. 3.5/Pathfinder had him take on a few spells, kinda making him a fighter with a dash of cleric, with Lay-on-hands for emergency medical treatment...

Which is saying that they can't compete. Adapt or die; provide value in some form that can't be found online, and you have a better shot at surviving.
