    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Cleric"

Hearing that Clerics are popular took me by surprise. Is it just because full caster + armor + shield? Help me understand the Cleric player brain.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Ranger"

Zephyr does let you ignore opportunity attacks for its duration (1 minute), no matter when you make its boosted attack. But it would be so much better if it just did that for the turn where it is activated, without Concentration.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Sorcerer"

I'm conflicted on Sorcerer Rage, as it's a class-defining mechanic that comes online at lv1, and is not useful to multiclass-dip for as it only affects Sorcerer spells, so it's already ahead of a lot of other early faetures... but it's just so baaasiiiiic. 'here you go, a number if 1 higher, how...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Monk"

They are really trying to sell the lv6 partypopper as a bargain for just 2FP.

Dragonbane Offers A Box Full Of Classic Fantasy

I was going through my RPGs, looking for a system to run some basic fantasy with, and I think I'm going to go with Dragonbane. You can easily bolt many things onto it from any d100 system, so, that gives me an excuse to check those out as well.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Ranger"

This rings true. Tasha works so much better than 2014 Ranger, but that was 4 years ago.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Ranger"

Boring. It's Tasha Ranger, which was an alright stopgap, but they treated it as the (totally new!) final destination.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Sorcerer"

More annoyingly about the Wild Sorcerer, if you can perfectly control when the wild surges happen, the other players will look at you badly if you choose to have them be possible when in a situation like attending a masquerade party, sneaking, etc. So that moves the risk that was inherent in...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Sorcerer"

Playtest Rage says Sorcerer spells only. Would be a bit insane if they changed that, but this is a game all about multiclass dips.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Sorcerer"

Speaking of thematic, (playtest) Wild Sorcerer being in total control over when and if their wild magic surges happen feels weird. It's very meta, as a player to be choosing when that manifests, while picking the subclass to play a character who is out of control.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Sorcerer"

I haven't seen anything that's as much against 'the class fantasy' as this thing. You just inherently manifest a spell that... requires exactly one bat wing and an eyelash or you cannot actually manifest it. Is that why Sorcerers are no better at skills or hitpoints than Wizards? They end up...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Monk"

I think the one really blurring that line is going to be MonkX/Rogue1. You could get Nick from a feat, but you only get one feat per 4 levels. It's more cost-effective to get Nick, extra skill, Expertise, Sneak Attack +1d6 from a 1-level dip, and your concept is good to roll right from lv2...

    D&D 5E (2024) So what's happening with Ranger?

Not really, because it only evolves at lv13 for the first time... You're happy that your lv1 spell (with free uses!) ate up a lv3 spell?

D&D 5E (2014) If you don't like ASI at character creation...

I'd like to use random rolling, because point-buy characters have very predictable scores based on their class. But to keep it balanced, it becomes convoluted fast, and you may still have weird pitfalls (it doesn't really matter if a Barbarian has Int 8 or Int 18, but if they multiclass to...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Monk"

Well, you cannot, because BG3 Monk can use armor+shield without losing any features and 5e24 one cannot. (okay, they lose the speed boost, but this actually makes BG3 human monks solid, getting light armor + shield from race) As to your actual concern... they also didn't mention Monk hitdie...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Monk"

I do wish they'd fixed 4Elements (because it has so many more moving parts than the new 'activate mode, done' one), but on the other hand, I also don't want a warrior class to rely on someone's left-over spells. They only make sense if you can do them on top of your regular warrior actions for...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Monk"

Individually, yes. If you're a gun monk who keeps running away while hitting people with ranged attacks (that can trigger Stunning Strike), you're even more unkillable. It's just, it's a team game, and health pools are a resource. If you're not attracting enough attention to dip into yours...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player's Handbook reveal: "New Monk"

Monk has such a tight theme, that it's still just the wuxia class. Or ninja, if you go for the MonkX/Rogue1 dip, who, besides the extra attack of Nick, opens up your life with Expertise so much. You could say your Monk is a gentleman duelist, but they're not known for kicking people that often...
