Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves Movie Review

The owlbear actually looked and moved poorly--I can't usually spot CGI but the owlbear was obvious CGI because e.g. it was cartoonishly inertialess. The bear from Cocaine Bear was 30x better. Maybe they should just have used the Cocaine Bear bear model instead of an owlbear. It wouldn't have...

D&D General What *is* D&D? (mild movie spoilers)

Oh, THAT explains why the name came up "wrong" initially. I've been having issues with Enworld on my phone and I thought I was responding to you, but it also included a partial quote from ilgatto. I double-checked before fixing the quote but apparently I should have triple checked. Sorry for...

D&D General What *is* D&D? (mild movie spoilers)

In gameworlds as I build them, people who live in a major city are by far the LEAST likely to run into deadly monsters like beholders, dragons, vampires, etc. The whole point of the armies of civilization is to keep those things far far away. The people who are most likely to get eaten by a...

D&D General What *is* D&D? (mild movie spoilers)

I think you may have interpreted an analogy intended to make a point as if it were a general aversion to learning. I don't think DND_Reborn meant the football analogy as a statement of general principle, just an illustration of how their lack of interest in this movie is not intended as an...

D&D Movie/TV Free 'Honor Among Thieves' Bundle Includes Characters & Magic Items From The Movie

With the WotC stat blocks, the optimal strategy in that fight vs. the guards would be for Holga to tank and NOT Recklessly attack, while Simon hangs back to more than double the total damage output, like some kind of magical archer. That doesn't match the movie. I've seen the movie three...

D&D General What *is* D&D? (mild movie spoilers)

Note that not being interested in learning a particular new thing (watching a soccer movie) doesn't mean you're not learning other new things (what your wife's day was like, how to improve your business, which stance Greek hoplites took when spear fighting). Time is just finite. I mean, there's...

D&D Movie/TV Free 'Honor Among Thieves' Bundle Includes Characters & Magic Items From The Movie

It looks like you forgot that Simon can Chaos Bolt, and apparently misread Edgin's damage as 9.35 somehow rather than d6+2d10+3 (17.5). I'm not trying to be snide or "win an argument", but in a discussion about numbers, having the right numbers matters so I'll redo the numbers. I am not...

D&D General What *is* D&D? (mild movie spoilers)

It's like we didn't even watch the same movie. The characters, out of nowhere, decided to send themselves on a sidequest to get a thing to let them negate a spell that was stopping them from getting through a door to steal the treasure to pay enough to make it worthwhile for Simon to help them...

D&D General What *is* D&D? (mild movie spoilers)

I'm not trying to change your mind, just responding to the ideas here: In most respects I feel that Honor Among Thieves was more serious and less Guardians-like than I expected. There was definitely some verbal humor but a lot of the gonzo stuff I saw in the trailers turned out to be from...

D&D General What *is* D&D? (mild movie spoilers)

Hey, some of us get the points being made on both sides. You're not wrong but neither is Micah. You're not disagreeing with each other substantively; you just think Micah is saying sometime different than Micah thinks Micah is saying, and you disagree with that other thing. So does Micah...

D&D General What *is* D&D? (mild movie spoilers)

It's been a long time since I played Shadowrun but what I remember is that instead of a duration measured in months, a la Planar Binding, it's measured in services akin to stereotypical genie "three wishes": "distract those guards" might be one service to ask from your air spirit, and "steal...

D&D General What *is* D&D? (mild movie spoilers)

Okay, I get your point, but I disagree. An optional side quest that is one way out of many to solve a problem BY DEFINITION cannot be a railroad, no matter how deadly it happens to be. P.S. The smart thing to do would have been to hither-thither right out of there the minute evil was smelled...

D&D 5E (2014) Honor Among Thieves Character Stats

You can simplify the boss version of a monster even further while still respecting PC/NPC similarity. All you do is say, "Sofina prefers the following spells and has enough slots to cast them freely for at least the first five rounds of combat: [list of five spells, ideally with a brief summary...

Could be. Could also be that's he's emotionally complex enough to have conflicting desires, like "I like this kid" but "I don't want to die." DramaSystem is a good game for exploring that type of conflict. In a game like Dungeon Fantasy, it would be revealing to see, when someone shoots at...

I agree, but that doesn't explain the other guy's comment about 100% choo choo railroading, which remains a mystery.

D&D General What *is* D&D? (mild movie spoilers)

Yeah, the main impact it has on the outcome is via The big difference though is that in a movie, like Last Jedi, it is a sin to waste the viewer's time by not editing out unfired Chekhov's Guns. In an adventure module, it is a sin to railroad the players by failing to provide more than one...

D&D General What *is* D&D? (mild movie spoilers)

I have no idea what you're talking about here. The high-level NPC in question (Zenk) isn't even in most of the movie. He's just part of an optional sidequest. If the players e.g. follow the treasure carriages straight to the treasure chamber under the arena, they'll never even meet Zenk.

D&D 5E (2014) Honor Among Thieves Character Stats

I haven't read the novel so I don't know if he was always like that, underneath. For what it's worth he's perfectly pleasant most of the time in the movie. But true character reveals itself in times of stress.

D&D General What *is* D&D? (mild movie spoilers)

She's too impressed with Zenk to feel high level. "I'm glad he's on our side!" she says, implicitly acknowledging that he's going through the Thayan assassins like she goes through regular human guards. That's what makes her feel 8th-ish level to me. She's a step above normal but a step down...

D&D General What *is* D&D? (mild movie spoilers)

Eh. Most of the adventure was about them trying to get through a door. As for enemies, the guards were fairly normal humans, outmatched by Holga. They avoided the intellect devourers, ran from the dragon and the displacer beast, and let Zenk handle the Thayan assassins. Sofina missed...
