Pretty much this. I think the politics of the US (which is where the bread is made so to speak for our hobby) is infecting the rest of the world through media (including RPGs) and it is not a positive IMO.

He likely would have known the cultural association but that doesn't discount @QuentinGeorge's point that Gygax had a love for the archaic language and thus used phylactery as opposed to the simpler description such as spirit cage/jar/box/amulet.

As a Greek, I was unaware of the religious association the word phylactery had to a Jewish holy item. It is pretty cool that there are still hidden artifacts to learn within this game we love. I have come to like the word phylactery so I will not be changing it at my table. But even more so...

Skills and Options too soon?

I imagine, for me at least, with a book (the written medium) it is easier to process. You may find it harder to divorce your personal feelings from the content consumed if it is being received visually (television/movies etc).

You can treat things with respect and still have people offended. It is not like all posters here who follow Judaism or in my play group over the years have reflected anything negative about the use of phylacteries within D&D.

You're not alone I do the same and give feats to each monster for every 4HD they have. I also draw info from various editions for descriptions, for narrative purposes and for mechanics.

I'm actually quite a fan of that Gazetteer as it was the first book where it made the baddie humanoids interesting for me - their diversity, their way of life, enemies within and enemies without, the struggle of Thar to keep them united against vastly superior opponents, shamans and sacrifices...
